Abstract: Known oscillating motors have inter alia starting difficulties resulting from the fact that the sliding seal ring is subject to pressures applied within said ring, even at a standstill. According to the invention, an oscillating motor is provided, comprising a sliding seal ring capable of axially sliding on a journal (8) of the output shaft (7) and which rests on an internal surface of the cover (4) with a sliding and sealing surface. Annular rings which are located on the cover side of the sliding seal ring (23) are connected through pressure compensation bores (34) and pressure compensation channels (38) to the side of the sliding seal ring (23) oriented towards the pressure chamber (13) or the discharge chamber (14). Static pressure in the housing (27) of the diagonal seal ring (28) and dynamic pressure in the pressure chambers (13) can thus be compensated.

Abstract: According to a preferred embodiment, a mechanical face seal assembly comprises four generally ring-shaped members and plural spring devices. The first ring-shaped member is directly fastened (e.g., bolted) to the flanged structural section located at the end of the shaft sleeve. The first and second ring-shaped members are coaxially aligned and rotatively communicative at respective radial surfaces. The first ring-shaped member is made of a metal (or ceramic) matrix composite material. The second ring-shaped member is made of a polymer matrix composite material. The second and third ring-shaped members are mated via radial openings (in the second ring-shaped member) and corresponding radial projections (in the third ring-shaped member). The third ring-shaped member has axial projections and is thereby directly fastened (e.g., bolted) to the fourth ring-shaped member, which clampingly secures the third ring-shaped member with respect to the shaft.

Abstract: A unitary sleeve lip seal can be used to provide permanently lubricated sealed bearings in severe service conditions such as the track pins of track-driven vehicles and agricultural equipment. The seal has a labyrinthine exclusion path and multiple dust lips contacting the sleeve in addition to the main sealing lip. A garter spring encircling the main sealing lip may enable the seal to operate at moderately elevated pressures. The sleeve has a radial flange at the outermost end. Elastomeric lips extend between the sleeve flange and a faceplate that terminates the outside end of the seal housing. The seal is packed with water-resistant grease and can, when installed in association with grease-packed bearings can create a permanently lubricated bearing/shaft assembly that requires no re-greasing. Resilient coatings both protect the sleeve and case and also improve leak resistance, especially when the seal is retrofitted onto shafts that have been damaged.

Abstract: The present invention is a self adjusting, volume balanced, single energizer rigid face seal for rolling cutter drill bits with floating journal bearings. Volume balancing is accomplished by utilizing a floating static seal between the rigid face seal ring and the bearing shaft. This floating static seal ring is moved axially within a annular groove by the volume pulses caused by the axial play of the cutter when in operation. At one end of the annular groove the geometry of the rigid seal ring and bearing shaft are set such that the seal assembly achieves volume balance when the bearing is running on its OD. If the bearing is running on its OD, the floating static seal will move from where ever it is in the annular groove by the volume pulses until it reaches the balance volume position.

  • Patent number: 6184598
Abstract: Known oscillating motors tend to present scaling problems; in particular they are often inadequately sealed in relation to the outside. The scaling elements also have a short service life as a result of the considerable strains to which they are subjected. The invention therefore provides an oscillating motor whose annular sealing ring consists of a sliding sealing ring (23) and a soft sealing ring, said rings being positioned next to each other on a common axis. The soft sealing ring is configured as a diagonal sealing ring (28) and is located on the sides of the pressure or discharge chambers (13, 14). The sliding sealing ring (23) is configured so that it is torsionally rigid in relation to the rotor (2). For this purpose, it preferably has two axial grooves (32), said grooves being arranged so that they are parallel and in pairs. The grooves (32) correspond to driver elements (31) located on the rotor wings (10).

  • Patent number: 6170830
Abstract: Dual functioning seals for use in forming a lubricant seal in a rotary rock bit comprise an annular elastomeric seal body having a dynamic seal surface for sealing against a dynamic surface and a static seal surface for sealing against a static surface. The seal body has an asymmetric axial cross-sectional geometry the dynamic seal surface having a greater radius of curvature than that of the static seal surface. The dynamic and static seal surfaces are formed from different elastomeric materials, and the dynamic seal surface is formed from an elastomeric material that is harder and more wear resistant than the elastomeric material used to form the static seal surface. A rotary rock bit seal constructed in this manner is well adapted to accommodate the different operating conditions and sealing requirements that exist both at the dynamic and static surfaces of the seal to ensure optimal seal performance and, thereby enhance the service life of the rock bit.
