Abstract: One embodiment of a transition-to-turbine seal (300) comprises a transition exit seal (302) adapted for fixed attachment to an exit rail (350) of a transition (109), and a stage-1 seal (340). The stage-1 seal (340) comprises an axial seal slot (348) comprising parallel walls (346, 347) adapted to slidingly engage a first male member (310) of the transition exit seal (302). The stage-1 seal (340) also comprises a radial seal slot (354) comprising parallel walls (351, 353) adapted to slidingly engage a plate (338) of a row 1 vane segment (330). The transition-to-turbine seal (300) thus provides both axial and radial freedom of movement. Materials and coatings for the transition exit seal (302) and the stage-1 seal (340) are selected to promote preferential wear of these components relative to wear of the surface of the row 1 vane segment (330). Wear of the exit rail (350) is reduced or eliminated due to the noted fixed attachment.

  • Patent number: 7521827
Abstract: A shaft seal assembly is disclosed having a stator including a main body and axial and radial projections therefrom. The rotor is radially extended and encompasses the axial and radial projections from said stator. A passageway formed between the radial projection of stator and rotor results in an axial passageway having its opening facing rearwardly from the rotor and away from the source of impinging coolant and/or contaminant. A concentric circumferential receptor groove in the stator facing the housing allows insertion of conductive means for transmission of electrostatic charge away from the shaft through the shaft seal assembly to the housing and ground. The receptor groove is opposite the axial passageway and provides for both a substantially lower contaminant environment and improved engagement with conductive means.

  • Patent number: 7044471
Abstract: A cartridge seal is co-axially secured within the circular aperture of a back plate bolted to a pump housing. Annular recesses are provided around inner and outer sides of the back plate, surrounding the circular aperture. The cartridge-type seal includes a stationary gland assembly and a rotatable shaft collar assembly. The inner side of the gland assembly includes a taper bore surrounding the pump drive shaft, and a circumferential lip. The lip nests within the inner annular recess of the back plate. The outer side of the gland assembly includes a circumferential groove. The collar assembly is locked to the drive shaft by means of setscrews. A snap-ring within the circumferential groove of the gland assembly is located within the outer side recess of the back plate. The snap-ring precludes axial movement of the gland assembly, while allowing quick removal and replacement of the cartridge seal.

  • Patent number: 6976679
Abstract: An inter-fluid brush seal assembly and associated method are provided. The seal assembly defines a gas passage for supplying gas to interfaces with a rotatable member. At least one of the interfaces is defined by a brush seal, and the flow of the gas through the interfaces can prevent the flow of fluid through the assembly, thereby sealing the assembly and preventing the fluid from passing therethrough. The gas and the fluid can be drained from the assembly through one or more drains.
