Publication number: 20020171205Abstract: An elastomeric valve stem seal component is adapted for installation over a valve guide of an internal combustion engine. The seal component incorporates fabric reinforcement within an annular jacket body of the component. In one preferred form, the fabric is positioned intermediate two elastomeric layers of the seal body; i.e. between an inner layer and an outer layer. One preferred manufacturing method provides extrusion of a tube having a fabric reinforcement layer already provided between inner and outer layers. A cutting die incorporates a push ring adapted to move the component along a staged molding assembly process. A series of threaded core pins are utilized for conveyance of the component in the fabrication process, which includes extruding a rubber tube and cover over a series of threaded core pins, cutting a portion of the rubber tube to a predetermined length, and molding the predetermined length to produce the component.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 16, 2001Publication date: November 21, 2002Applicant: Dana CorporationInventor: Mark A. Patent number: 6412467Abstract: The present invention is a valve stem seal assembly module for installation over a valve guide of an internal combustion engine. The module includes a seal retainer and an elastomeric annular seal circumferentially and frictionally contained within the retainer. The retainer is defined by an elongate cylindrical body having an annular flange at its lower end and at least one radially inwardly extending first boss at its upper end. A separate annular spring retainer has a lower radially outwardly extending second boss that interlockingly engages the first boss of the seal retainer, and an upper radially outwardly extending flange; a valve return spring extends longitudinally between and engages respective flanges of spring and seal retainers. The spring is effective to provide resilient engagement of first and second bosses prior to assembly, whereby the spring and seal retainers are telescopingly interconnected to facilitate installation of the module in a pre-assembly mode.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 2001Date of Patent: July 2, 2002Assignee: Dana CorporationInventor: Mark A. Patent number: 6394463Abstract: The oil seal of the present invention for a valve stem includes a triple seal lip having a cam chamber side lip, a first combustion chamber side lip and a second combustion chamber side lip. Notches are provided on the second combustion chamber side lip and other notches are provided on the first combustion chamber side lip. These notches permit flow communication from the cam chamber side with the combustion chamber side. The notches provided on the combustion chamber side lip and the notches provided on the second combustion chamber side lip are placed circumferentially shifted from each other so that the notches are not axially aligned relative to the notches. Preferably, the non-notched portion is axially aligned and spaced apart relative to the notched portion.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 2000Date of Patent: May 28, 2002Assignee: Freudenberg-Nok General PartnershipInventor: Takeo Otani

Patent number: 6394462Abstract: This is a reliable long-lasting removable seal for attachment to the push rod opening of a service brake actuator that is to be used with a disc brake system. The seal allows the service brake actuator to enjoy the benefits of having breather holes in its housing wall while preventing any unwanted contaminants brought in through such holes from being transmitted to the attached disc brake mechanism. The seal is a hollow molded piece in the form of a tubular insert made of a slightly deformable material that fits into the central opening in the lower service brake housing through which the push rod extends. Flanges on the insert sealingly engage the wall of the service brake housing, and a central bore sealingly engages the push rod. The insert may include a separate internal bushing made of durable material which supports at least one annular seal for engaging the push rod.Type: GrantFiled: January 26, 2000Date of Patent: May 28, 2002Assignee: TSE Brakes, Inc.Inventors: Savvas K. Patent number: 6269787Abstract: A rocker cover gasket assembly is provided that is suitable for use in connection with a valve assembly for an internal combustion engine. The rocker cover gasket assembly includes a carrier, a plurality of valve stem seals integral with the carrier and at least one connector, wherein the connector is connected to two adjacent valve stem seals to form a linkage or a web of valve steam seals. The connectors and carrier may contain one or more handle members to improve manual or mechanical handling of the assembly. The connectors and portions of the carrier may be formed with thinned portions to allow for selective removal of individual valve stem seals in the event of wear or failure.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 2000Date of Patent: August 7, 2001Assignee: Dana CorporationInventor: Troy D. Patent number: 6270082Abstract: A coextruded valve stem seal is provided that includes a sleeve having an upper and lower portion, a central vertical axis, and a generally concentric aperture. The sleeve includes an inner layer an inner layer of a resilient sealing material, such as a rubber, and an outer layer of a coextrudable rigid material, such as a plastic material. The lower portion of a preferred embodiment of the sleeve may include a radially extending flange. A method for making the valve stem seal in accordance with the principles of the invention is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 1999Date of Patent: August 7, 2001Assignee: Dana CorporationInventor: Timothy A. Patent number: 6227548Abstract: A seal such as a valve shaft seal for use with machine parts that reciprocate relative to each other includes an elastomer sealing lip adapted to rest with a radial spring preload on one machine part and a sleeve-shaped holder carrying the sealing lip and projecting axially beyond the sealing lip for serving to simultaneously attach the seal to a second machine part. To provide a seal with a relatively uncomplicated and inexpensive holder that ensures a safe and flawless attachment and centering, the portion of the holder projecting axially beyond the sealing lip is provided with at least one projection that is directed essentially at an angle towards the inside for engaging a recess in the outer surface of the second machine part.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 1998Date of Patent: May 8, 2001Assignee: CR Elastomere GmbHInventor: Jürgen Netzer

Patent number: 6006778Abstract: A valve stem sealing device used for preventing oil from entering a combustion chamber through a gap formed between a valve guide and a valve stem is disclosed. The valve stem sealing device comprises an annular oil seal surrounding a valve stem and an annular support member fixed to the top of the valve guide so as to hold the oil seal in its place, wherein the support member has an inwardly opening annular recess and rotatably receives the oil seal in the recess, with a bearing being positioned between said oil seal and the side wall of the support member. In addition, a rubber member is tightly interposed between the support member and the valve guide so as to absorb the vibrations caused by a valve operation. Also, a support cap covers the outside wall of the oil seal so that the outside wall of the support cap is brought into contact with the bearing.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 1997Date of Patent: December 28, 1999Assignee: Hyundai Motor CompanyInventor: Gyu Wan Kim

Patent number: 5873337Abstract: A two-piece valve stem guide allows the guide to be reamed in-place without damaging an installed valve seal. A first section of the guide is press fitted into an axially extending bore of an internal combustion engine component. Next, a multi-piece seal comprising a metallic retainer, elastomeric seal element and optional spring is inserted into the bore. Then a second section of the stem guide is partially installed into the bore. The two sections are reamed to create a common inner radial diameter that is adapted to receive a valve stem. Finally, the second section is pressed axially downward, engaging the seal and forcing the elastomeric seal element radially inwardly until it comes into contact with an installed valve stem.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1997Date of Patent: February 23, 1999Assignee: Dana CorporationInventor: John D.
