  • Patent number: 8292301
Abstract: A multifunction ring comprises an elastomeric body which totally encloses at least one circumferential tubular cavity filled with at least one liquid medium. In various ring embodiments the liquid medium conducts heat, damps vibration, blocks extrusion and/or transmits hydraulic pressure. When one or more rings are used in a plunger packing, longitudinal compression of the ring(s) secondary to increased pumped fluid pressure occurs during a pressure stroke. Such compression, acting through the compliance of each ring, increases tubular cavity hydraulic pressure and causes radial ring expansion. Ring expansion is both inward toward a plunger and, simultaneously, outward toward its packing box. Inward expansion tends to seal the extrusion gap, while outward expansion increases coupling from plunger to packing box to increase vibration damping and/or heat scavenging. Periodic reduction of pumped fluid pressure tends to reverse radial ring expansion, thus reducing both frictional ring wear and heat generation.

Each such ring comprises a totally-enclosed circumferential tubular cavity. The cavity is filled with a dilatant liquid which transmits hydraulic pressure throughout the tubular cavity and simultaneously damps pump vibration transmitted via the packing box. Pump pressure strokes increase tubular cavity hydraulic pressure, resulting in radial ring expansion forces both inwardly toward a plunger and outwardly toward its packing box. Inward ring expansion tends to close the extrusion gap, while outward expansion force improves heat transfer from plunger to packing box. Outward expansion force also increases coupling of packing box vibration to hysteresis loss in the dilatant liquid.

Abstract: A shaft seal packing exhibits high sealability at the time of initial assembly and also exhibits, even after the packing is retightened, excellent sealability by an increased seal surface pressure obtained through an effect of pressing and by self-sealability obtained through an effect of fluid pressure. A shaft seal structure for a valve includes a body for a valve, a valve shaft, a valve disc disposed within the body so as to be rotatable or capable of ascending and descending, a valve shaft seal chamber having the valve shaft axially attached thereto, a shaft seal packing that is attached to the shaft seal chamber and comprises annular packing bodies stacked and substantially V-shaped in cross section, with stacked layer faces on the inner-diameter side of the packing bodies brought into tight contact with one another and stacked layer faces on the outer-diameter side of the packing bodies formed with prescribed gaps between the adjacent stacked layer faces.

Abstract: A shaft seal for forming a dynamic seal along an axially extending annular running surface and method of installation thereof is provided. The shaft seal has a mounting portion configured to be connected to a stationary housing and a seal lip having an annular sealing surface extending between an oil side end and an air side end of the seal lip. The sealing surface is configured to extend axially along a shaft running surface. An annular bridge portion connects the seal lip to the mounting portion. A plurality of webs extend generally radially between the bridge portion and the mounting portion to prevent the seal lip from being inadvertently unfolded during installation or while in use. An annulus can be used to install the shaft seal into a housing and about a shaft without the need for secondary operations.

A pair of annular seal glands 18 seal the stator material to the outer tube. The stator material is injection molded into the inner tube and passes through the plurality of apertures and into an annular gap between the inner tube and the outer tube. In other embodiments, the outer housing for a progressing cavity pump or motor is provided with one or more grooves, with each groove having an outer surface radius less than the outer housing surface radius. A plurality of apertures are provided in fluid communication with the grooves.
