Patent number: 11204099Abstract: A seal that enables an enclosure to be sealed and to keep an air pressure balance between an internal space within the enclosure and an external space outside the enclosure in such a way that water ingress into the enclosure is hindered in a predictable manner. This is accomplished by providing a seal having at least one small diameter tube with at least an inner surface being hydrophobic, oleophobic or omniphobic. The seal is mounted in the enclosure between the inner and outer space. To further avoid small particle contaminants to enter and go through the at least one small diameter tube, it is preferable to have a small diameter tube with curves and bends, and it will still allow an airflow through it if there is an air pressure imbalance.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 2019Date of Patent: December 21, 2021Assignee: Aktiebolaget SKFInventor: Warrick Allen

Patent number: 6620361Abstract: A method of fabricating a fluid seal for sealing a relatively rotatable member, wherein the fluid seal has an elastomeric sealing member bonded to a PTFE insert. A wafer of PTFE material has a body portion and an end portion of a greater thickness than the body portion. The wafer is placed in a mold cavity with one side of the wafer opposed to a surface portion of the mold cavity. Elastomeric material is forced into the mold cavity to form a molded preform of the elastomeric sealing member and bond the preform to an opposite side of the wafer. The molded preform and bonded wafer are removed from the mold cavity. The end portion of the wafer and an end portion of the preform are trimmed to form the fluid seal.Type: GrantFiled: July 9, 2002Date of Patent: September 16, 2003Assignee: Federal-Mogul World Wide, Inc.Inventors: Scott Longtin, Stephen J. Carr, Frederick R. Hatch, Jon A. Chandler, Gary B. Drake, Ronald Maurice Noteboom, II, Michael J. Myers

Patent number: 6601855Abstract: A universal joint seal for retaining lubricant therein. The seal cooperates to form a static seal with the trunnion and a static seal with the bearing cup and permits relative angular movement between the trunnion and bearing cup through a flexible web portion. The seal optionally permits venting of pressure within the grease cavity formed between the trunnion and bearing cup. The seal also has a passage communicating with the grease cavity. The seal has an outward facing lip seal that provides a fluid barrier to the migration of lubricant out of the passage. In response to a moderate pressure level within the grease cavity, the lip moves away from the contacting surface so as to vent the moderate pressure within the grease cavity out of the sealed region and to prevent an excessive pressure differential from developing across the lip. Several alternate embodiments permitting venting of pressure from the grease cavity are disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 1999Date of Patent: August 5, 2003Inventor: Keith A. Clark

Patent number: 6557857Abstract: A radial lip seal for sealably mounting within a split circular seal housing includes a seal body having a channel disposed along a seal body outside diameter. The radial split seal includes an annular seal body which is divided into at least two substantially similar semi-annular seal body sections that are each connected together at end portions. The seal body formed from such sections includes a sealing lip that extends radially inwardly from the body for slidable sealing contact around a rotatable shaft. An energizer is seated within the channel. The seal is mounted within a seal housing that is configured to fix the axial placement of the seal therein. The energizer is interposed between the seal and the seal housing to both allow the seal to move radially a desired distance within the seal housing in response to seal thermal expansion and contraction, and to provide a leak-tight seal therebetween.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 1999Date of Patent: May 6, 2003Assignee: Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics CompanyInventor: James R. Patent number: 6513811Abstract: The air damper includes a piston reciprocating within a cylindrical housing. The piston includes a lip seal which is made of rubber or thermoplastic elastomer impregnated with a minimum of 3% molybdenum/seal part weight, or a minimum of 2% polytetrafluoroethylene or silicone/seal part weight or a minimum of 1% wax/seal part weight. The lip seal is coated with a minimum of 0.5%/seal part weight graphite powder/molybdenum disulfide. The housing is made with a minimum of 2% silicone impregnated thermoplastic or a minimum of 2% moly sulfide impregnated thermoplastic. This provides for increased smoothness of operation of the air damper, particularly at low speeds.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 2000Date of Patent: February 4, 2003Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventor: Steven L. Publication number: 20020185822Abstract: A shaft seal includes an elastomeric annular body having an outwardly protruding annular lip. An annular outer case is embedded into the body. An annular insert is positioned adjacent the outer case. An annular inner case is embedded into the body adjacent the insert. The outer case, the insert, and the inner case support the lip.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 7, 2002Publication date: December 12, 2002Inventors: Andrew C. Spain, Robert P. LaPlante

Patent number: 6416058Abstract: The invention concerns a packing seal with its lip (1) placed in a toroidal housing (2) of a part (3) mobile in rotation and/or translation relatively to a part (4) and whereof the lip (5) ensuring the seal between the lining and the part (4) exerts on said part (4) an almost constant force whatever the pressure and whereof the support diameter can be maintained also almost constant whatever the temperature.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 2000Date of Patent: July 9, 2002Inventor: Marian Gorski Zygmunt

Patent number: 6334618Abstract: On a radially inner surface of a sealing lip of an oil seal, radiation ray is irradiated to induce chemical reaction in the materials of the sealing lip, to form hard helical portions. The hard helical portions act like a helical groove or rib to pump oil back to oil-side to show an excellent sealing property when there is a relative rotational movement between the sealing lip and a shaft to be sealed, as well as even static sealing ability at the time there is no relative rotative movement.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 1999Date of Patent: January 1, 2002Assignee: NOK CorporationInventors: Takashi Ohta, Hironori Minagawa

Patent number: 6302403Abstract: A sealing assembly for two mechanical members connected for relative rotation; a first mechanical member is fitted integrally with a substantially rigid shield, from which projects radially an annular sealing member having, on a respective first annular face, a first and a second axial sealing lip, both cooperating in sliding manner with a sealing surface of a second mechanical member; when the first annular face of the annular sealing member is subjected to a pressure substantially equal to the pressure on a second annular face, opposite the first, of the annular sealing member, only the first lip cooperates in sliding manner with the sealing surface, and the second lip mates, with no interference, with the sealing surface to permit fluid passage; conversely, when the first annular face is subjected to a pressure significantly lower than the pressure on the opposite second annular face, the annular sealing member is deformed elastically so that the second lip also cooperates in sliding manner with the sealinType: GrantFiled: October 25, 1999Date of Patent: October 16, 2001Assignee: SKF Industrie S.p.A.Inventors: Gianfranco Pairone, Fabrizio Avaro, Mario Micca
