  • Patent number: 8104769
Abstract: A liquid and gas tight bi-directional metal frustro-conical seal is energized by compression between planar, annular faces causing its inner and outer diameters to sealingly engage opposing cylindrical surfaces of inner and outer metal pipes. The contact forces between the concentric sealing surfaces are high in order to locally deform the softer metal and eliminate leakage paths. The sealing ring is backed-up by a similar ring that is reduced in cross-sectional width, such that when compressed the ring does not engage the inner and outer cylindrical surfaces. The second ring is nested with and directly below the sealing ring, and equally axially compressed when the joint is assembled. When the pipe joints are disassembled, the second ring serves to restore the seal ring to its original, deeper frustro-conical shape, allowing the pipe joints to be easily separated for reuse of the piping in a different location.

  • Publication number: 20090243230
Abstract: An improved floating collar assembly for gas turbine combustion units consists of a sheet metal collar with a flat flange and an E seal that is pre-compressed within a block of epoxy. The collar fits over a corresponding fuel nozzle burner tube and is retained on a cap assembly by a flat plate. During assembly, the collar is loose so that it floats, which makes cap assembly easy. During operation, the epoxy used to pre-compress the E seal heats up and burns off, whereupon the E seal opens up and produces a seating load between the collar and plate that is high enough to keep the collar from rotating and thereby reduce collar wear.

  • Patent number: 7004477
Abstract: A gasket is adapted to seal between a first member and a second member, and includes a first portion a second portion. The first portion includes a first elastomeric seal portion adapted to be in sealing engagement with the first member. The first portion may also include a clip or a coil spring contained within an elastomeric portion in order to provide a sealing force against the first member. The second portion is preferably molded integral with the first portion and includes a second elastomeric seal portion having a coil spring contained therein. The second portion is adapted to be in sealing engagement with the second member, with the coil spring being compressed in its normal direction when the gasket is assembled between the first member and the second member. The coil spring, then, exerts a sealing force with minimal degradation over time.

  • Patent number: 6497226
Abstract: An improved modular, radially-compliant, redundantly-sealing journal-type bearing assembly comprising two bearing elements retained in a housing and positively loaded in opposing directions by a compression spring disposed therebetween. A shaft to be supported and sealed against leakage by the bearing, such as a valve pintle shaft, is disposed in an axial bore in each of the bearing elements, which bores are fitted as closely to the diameter of the shaft as is possible without causing the shaft to bind in the bores. Each of the radial bearing faces opposite the spring forms a seal with a corresponding internal surface of the housing, defining thereby a redundant sealing system. The bearings are radially compliant within the housing by a predetermined small distance to allow the shaft to be operatively self-centered, such as by an attached valve head mating into a valve seat.

  • Patent number: 6056291
Abstract: A metal gasket excellent in sealing performance and capable of sealing with a small pressing force. The metal gasket comprises at least one metal sheath with C-shaped cross-section and a ring elastic core surrounded by the metal sheath and the metal gasket is served for sealing with aid of the contact with the sealing face tightened by exerting a force in the axis center direction, wherein the metal sheath has the worked portion with a locally thin cross-section over the whole length, and when the metal sheath is exerted with a force and deformed, the deflection in the axis direction of the metal sheath due to concentrated stress on the thin worked portion causes to form projections at the both sides of the deflection which projections are pressed onto the sealing face.
