Patent number: 10427221Abstract: A workholding chuck that allows for a sizable gripping range by utilizing a rotary clamping method with dual stage motion. The dual stage rotary gripping chuck allows small diameter parts to be clamped, as well as parts that are larger than the main chuck body diameter. The dual stage motion allows resistance to be first achieved by lightly clamping on a workpiece, which is then converted to a high force-to-movement ratio. The workholding chuck employs two helical connections that allow for a large gripping diameter variation with a short amount of axial travel.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 2018Date of Patent: October 1, 2019Assignee: Hammill Manufacturing Company, Co-op Tool DivisionInventors: David Steven Bermudez, Greg Lentner, Robert Jay Newell

Patent number: 4843861Abstract: A bending machine comprises a plurality of bending units arranged to make bends in a common plane. The bending units are adjustably mounted to adjust the separation thereof in the common plane. Apparatus for holding and turning a workpiece about a predetermined axis is mounted between the bending units so that the predetermined axis is aligned or alignable with the common plane. The apparatus comprises a plurality of jaw members rotatable in unison about the predetermined axis. Each jaw member is axially open ended, has a central socket and a mouth extending from said socket to interrupt the periphery of the jaw member. The jaw members are interconnected and mounted to rotate in unison about the predetermined axis when at least one thereof is driven by a driving mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 1987Date of Patent: July 4, 1989Assignee: Langbow LimitedInventor: Geoffrey T. Patent number: 4475318Abstract: A device for clamping a crankshaft in a grinding machine has a rotary face plate which defines a lubricant-filled space and carries two parallel shafts for removable clamping jaws. The jaws can cooperate with a support, which is removably affixed to the face plate, to hold a crankshaft therebetween. The mechanism for pivoting the jaws toward and away from the support has a feed screw which is accessible from the outside of the face plate and extends into the space where it meshes with a nut which can pivot two bell crank levers in opposite directions. The bell crank levers are mounted on the two shafts, and those arms of the levers which must be pivoted by the nut in order to move the respective jaws toward the support carry pistons which deform packages of dished springs when the jaws bear against the crankshaft.Type: GrantFiled: February 8, 1982Date of Patent: October 9, 1984Assignee: Naxos-Union Schleifmittel-Und SchleifmaschinenfabrikInventor: Peter Russ

Patent number: 4467681Abstract: A chuck mechamism for holding a workpiece during a machining operation comprising a frame, a stop block secured to the frame and an annular jaw slidably mounted within an annular channel in the frame. The jaw is movable between a clamping position in which a workpiece is held between the jaw and the stop block, and a nonclamping position. Preferably, the jaw includes a first sector and a second sector secured together by interlocking but spaced apart flanges. The flanges permit limited annular movement between the sectors.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 1981Date of Patent: August 28, 1984Inventor: Joseph A. Oeming

Patent number: 4317400Abstract: A clamping assembly for clamping a block of wearable material for guiding a band saw blade to maintain the blade in alignment at a working station. The block of wearable material is formed with a dovetail adjacent a rear face remote from the wearing face of the block, and the clamping assembly includes clamping elements having inclined surfaces mating with the inclined surfaces of the dovetail to provide clamping and gripping forces and inwardly directed drawing forces on the block. The clamping elements are separated in the clamping region by a gap permitting them to be drawn towards one another and thereby to exert a clamping force on the dovetail of the block of wearable material. The clamping elements are dimensioned so that one element behaves as a cantilever spaced from the other element, which thereby maintains a fixed relationship with a supporting datum surface.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 1980Date of Patent: March 2, 1982Inventor: Gerald J. Matchette

Patent number: 4215961Abstract: A tightening and clamping mechanism for the mandrel collar of a milling or boring spindle. The clamping elements are semi-circular devices with notches in their outer surfaces. By engaging the notches with retainer pins and tightening actuators, the clamping elements may be closed around the mandrel collar thereby securing it to the spindle housing.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 1978Date of Patent: August 5, 1980Assignee: Maho Werkzeugmaschinenbau Babel & Co.Inventor: Werner Babel
