Patent number: 9022393Abstract: A cutting tool includes a chuck, a compressible conical collet and a lock nut for locking the collet. The cutting tool lock nut has a nut portion with a threaded portion for threading with the chuck, and a locking portion with a collet-locking surface formed with angled coolant grooves thereon. The collet-locking surface presses on the collet head, thereby compressing it to grip a tool shank in a collet bore thereof. As the locking portion presses only against a peripheral surface of the collet head, the lock nut is suitable for locking collets with different bore diameters. When the chuck is provided with a coolant fluid, the coolant fluid flows through the chuck and through the collet towards the locking portion, passing through the coolant notches between the locking portion and the collet head, and sprayed towards a location along the tool shank.Type: GrantFiled: August 23, 2012Date of Patent: May 5, 2015Assignee: Iscar, Ltd.Inventor: Hanoch Guy

Patent number: 8752843Abstract: A collet has seal bores formed in interspaces of the collet. The seal bores are oriented at an acute angle ? to the longitudinal axis of the collet, and extend towards a tool end of the collet, from a clamping surface of the collet to a collet peripheral surface. Adjacent the clamping bore, the collet has stopping surfaces for accurately locating the seals. When inserted into the seal bores, the seals prevent fluid leakage between the clamping bore surface and the peripheral surface of the collet.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 2011Date of Patent: June 17, 2014Assignee: Iscar, Ltd.Inventor: Hanoch Guy

Publication number: 20120292863Abstract: A clamping assembly for a toolholder includes a toolholder body having an access hole. A locking sleeve is slidably disposed within the access hole and a center collet is disposed within the locking sleeve and is fixedly connected to the toolholder body. The center collet receives a retaining tip of a tool. A spring assembly and a release device cause the locking sleeve to move within the access hole between a load position, where the locking sleeve is disengaged from the center collet such that the center collet is open and a lock position, where the locking sleeve engages the center collet such that the center collet is closed and locks the retaining tip of the tool within the access hole.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 17, 2011Publication date: November 22, 2012Applicant: KENNAMETAL INC.Inventors: Karen Anne Craig, Kenneth George Deroche

Patent number: 6729627Abstract: The present invention provides a capped collet and a cap attached to the collet, which are capable of efficiently supplying a cooling fluid to a tool according to the type of the tool held therein, and of performing satisfactory cooling. The capped collet comprises: a collet body 10; a cap 11 which is attached to the top-end side of the collet body 10 in an attachable and detachable manner and which allows the tool to pierce therethrough; and a sealing member 12 placed between a tool holder 101 and the cap 11 in order to hermetically seal a space between them. The collet body 10 has a slot 13 formed at least from the top-end side thereof, and an annular projection 21 which is formed on the top-end side and which is coupled with the cap 11. The cap 1 has an annular groove 18 for coupling with the annular projection 21 of the collet body 10, and a cover 22 for covering the end face of the collet body 10 on the top-end side.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 2002Date of Patent: May 4, 2004Assignee: Big Alpha Co., Inc.Inventors: Tsuyoshi Komine, Haruaki Kubo

Patent number: 6726221Abstract: A collet chuck assembly includes a mount, a selectively-axially-movable collet closing sleeve, and a multiple-segment collet head. The collet head includes two axially-spaced outer circumferential cam surfaces that engage two axially-spaced inner circumferential cam surfaces of the closing sleeve. A quick-release cap attached to the mount includes two inwardly-radially-extending tabs that engage two outwardly-radially-extending lips of the collet head to prevent the collet head from moving axially relative to the cap. Flat resilient collet seals are disposed between each set of adjoining collet segments to prevent debris from getting into the collet chuck assembly between the segments. The collet seals maintain full-surface contact with adjoining segments even when the collet head is fully opened. A slinger bore formed in the cap directs debris radially-outwardly out of the collet chuck assembly.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 2002Date of Patent: April 27, 2004Assignee: Hardinge Inc.Inventors: Donald N.
