  • Patent number: 6520508
Abstract: A tool receiver or chuck is provided which may receive a cutting tool, such as a router bit or the like, therewithin and non-rotatably retain the tool relative to a rotary driving device. The tool receiver includes a plurality of blades substantially encased within a conical surface. A biasing member biases the blades toward a narrow end of the conical surface such that the blades are biased in a tool engaging or operative position. The biasing member and conical surface thus bias the blades radially inward toward the cutting tool such that the blades engage the conical surface and the cutting tool. The tool receiver preferably includes a retaining member, which retains the blades within the conical surface and biases the blades radially outwardly toward the conical surface.

  • Patent number: 6155576
Abstract: A rotary power tool designed to accept a wider range of tool shank diameters, and particularly larger diameters, without any special adapters, including a threaded output spindle with a stepped internal bore including an enlarged counter bore at its end. A one-piece collet having jaw segments, central shank portion, and a base is seated in the spindle bore so the jaw segments are cammed directly by the spindle end, and a collet nut threaded on the spindle, cams the distal ends of the jaw segments against the tool shank. The collet is designed so the larger tool shanks spread the jaws upon collet entry causing the shank portion of the collet to bulge outwardly as the collet jaws are cammed back into parallel relation against the large tool shank. This, in short, enables a smaller size collet to receive and clamp larger diameter tool shanks.

  • Patent number: 5820135
Abstract: The chuck includes a body with an axial recess and a transverse opening intersecting the recess. First and second cam members are disposed at least partially within the transverse opening and have first and second passages, respectively, which squeeze a cylindrical, slitted inner sleeve that holds the tool shank during rotation of the chuck. The inner sleeve is spring-biased for axial movement relative to the body and has a tapered upper end that is compressed when engaging a tapered retainer sleeve and thereby retains the tool shank during nonrotation of the chuck. An outer sleeve including comolded inner and outer shells, is configured and disposed to move axially about the body. A remote actuating member effects axial movement of the outer sleeve and inner sleeves to permit insertion or withdrawal of the tool shank from the chuck. An engagement mechanism connects the chuck to a drive spindle and also has a mounting mechanism for facilitating automated mounting of the chuck to a drive spindle.
