  • Patent number: 10167046
Abstract: Vehicle including a frame, a seat mounted to the frame, wheels rotatably mounted on the frame, and drive mechanisms for causing rotation of one wheel. Each drive mechanism includes an arm pivotally attached to the frame at one end, a weight and attached pedal at an opposite end of the arm, and a guide member including a bump and that moves in conjunction with movement of the weight. The guide member has a first end region at which the guide member is pivotally attached to the frame and a second, opposite end region which is free. A roller attached to the arm moves along the guide member during pivotal movement of the arm to cause pivoting of the guide member as the roller engages with the bump. An energy transfer system converts pivotal movement of the guide member into motive power to rotate the wheel.

Abstract: A drive mechanism effects a rotary power output in response to a reciprocating power input resulting from substantially linear forces applied to the drive mechanism, such as those forces applied by a rider on a bicycle. The drive mechanism includes input bevel gears meshed with corresponding output bevel gears coupled to a common power output shaft through clutches that effect a rotary power output at the power output shaft in response to the reciprocating power input from the substantially linear forces. Opposite crank arms are coupled with the input bevel gears such that each crank arm is advanced by an applied substantially linear force, and is retracted upon advancement of the opposite crank arm. In a bicycle, opposite pedals are coupled to corresponding crank arms and are moved through predetermined power strokes in response to substantially linear forces applied by a rider to effect corresponding rotational movements of the input bevel gears and concomitant rotary power output at the power output shaft.

  • Patent number: 6017295
Abstract: A mobile exercise apparatus is provided for sit down exercise operated in the recumbent position where foot operated pedals follow an oblong pedal path coordinated with arm exercise. The pedal path is configured to provide a long downward power stroke that remains generally tangent to the lower leg for greater leg exercise and torque conversion to the driven wheel. The pedals are guided by extended foot supports as part of a linkage system that is coupled to the arm exercise. Pedal motion and arm exercise can be adjusted during operation of the exercise apparatus to exercise different muscles.

  • Patent number: 5697627
Abstract: In order to provide a vehicle with a driven wheel (30), which possesses an external wheel hub (23) and is driven with the aid of a thrust crank drive which, while easily and safely operable, is at the same time able to achieve a high terminal velocity and which is simple in the construction of the drive arrangement, the thrust crank drive comprises a crankwheel (38) and a thrust rod (37) rotatably hinged with one end to the crankwheel (38) outside the wheel axis for the transmission of the force. The driven wheel (30) is driven by means of a drive wheel (7) which, via a free-wheel mechanism (11,12, 13,14,19), is in operative connection with the external wheel hub (23) of the driven wheel (30). A first mechanism (36) is provided which transmits the force between the crankwheel (38) and the drive wheel (7) and, for overcoming the dead center, a second mechanism is provided in the thrust crank drive which at least partially neutralizes the effect of the free-wheel mechanism (11,12,13,14,19).

  • Patent number: 5690345
Abstract: A rectilinear drive assembly for a bicycle. The drive assembly includes a pair of tracks that each have a pair of opposing side portions joined by a pair of opposing radial end portions which together define a rectilinear path. The drive assembly also has a pair of pedals that are coupled to the track by a pair of wheel assemblies. The wheel assemblies follow the outline of the tracks so that the pedals move in a rectilinear path. The linear movement of the pedal provides a more efficient transfer of power from the rider's legs to the drive assembly. Each wheel assembly has a pair of inner wheels that roll along an inner surface of the track and a pair of outer wheels that roll along an outer surface of the track. The outer wheels are separated by a distance greater than the separation of the inner wheels to compensate for the different radiuses of the inner and outer surfaces at the radial end portions of the track. The wheel assemblies are connected to chains which rotate a number of sprockets.

  • Patent number: 5527246
Abstract: A mobile exercising apparatus which promotes cardiovascular exercise yet minimizes impact to critical joints. A frame supports a pair of reciprocating members which are displace generally horizontally along the frame at one end yet reciprocate in a circular motion at the other through a coupling system attached to the frame. Structure is included which permits each foot of the user to move in a generally elliptical path during exercise and drive a wheel thereby propelling the apparatus. This allows simulation of walking or running without impact. The device may include linkage to facilitate a corresponding upper body exercise involving movement of the arm in which case each hand of the user is displaced along an arcuate path.

  • Patent number: 5351575
Abstract: The pumping propulsion system relates to a new drive and/or power system for a bicycle/vehicle. Power is applied to the pumping propulsion system by a stepping action from an individual's legs and feet. The pumping propulsion system operates by use of independent drawn cup roller clutch mechanisms which are integral to a pair of support members and a sprocket which in turn are engaged to a shaft. The drawn cup roller clutch mechanisms permit the pair of support members to be returned to an elevated position by a spring mechanism. During operation of the pumping propulsion system, the stepping action by an individual rotates a sprocket which is engaged to a shaft. The shaft is engaged to the hub of the bicycle frame. The rotation of the sprocket circulates the chain, transferring power to the rear wheel propelling the bicycle/vehicle.
