Patent number: 6244612Abstract: The present invention reveals a device that enables an instructor to stabilize a moving single or double wheel cycle and rider as the instructor assists the new rider to safely develop the balancing and steering skills necessary to control the cycle independently. To accomplish its purpose, the device comprises: a pivotal connector mounted to the cycle; a handle that provides a gripping location for the instructor; and an extension which joins the connector to the handle. The pivotally mounted connector permits the handle to be swung laterally in an arc from a position of minimal control behind the rider, to an position of maximum control immediately adjacent to the rider. The amount of leverage and control the instructor desires to exert over the moving cycle and rider is determined by where in relation to the rider the instructor chooses to position the handle.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 1997Date of Patent: June 12, 2001Inventor: Alexander Blake Henderson

Patent number: 6213237Abstract: Lockup hydraulic valve system for controlling side swing arm supported wheels on a motorcycle when the wheels are in a downward ground engaging position. The valve system has an open-unlocked and closed-locked position. In the unlocked position, a driver riding the motorcycle about turns where the bike tilts either to the right or to the left allows the corresponding side wheel to move upward. Also in the unlocked position, the side wheels will raise when the motorcycle is running over uneven road surfaces. In the locked position, the side wheels stay in a rigid/fixed downward position while the motorcycle is standing still up to speeds of approximately 15 mph. Magnets attached to the front wheel along with a pickup sensor determine the speed of the motorcycle. Above, 15 mph, a relay activated safety switch overides the locked position putting the valve controls into the unlocked position.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 1998Date of Patent: April 10, 2001Inventor: David Willman

Patent number: 6170846Abstract: A vehicle support system for maintaining a vehicle in an upright position. The support system includes a base plate attached to a side surface and first and second mounting blocks attached to the base plate. Pivotably mounted between the first and second mounting blocks is a shaft to which a support leg and ratchet gear are fixedly mounted. A slot is formed in an upper body portion of the second mounting block which laterally extends over the ratchet gear. Mounted in the slot is a plunger and a biasing spring which downwardly biases the plunger such that a lower side surface thereof rides along an exterior side surface of the ratchet gear to allow the support leg to pivot, from an initial position, in a first direction along a first plane generally orthogonal to the side surface of the vehicle. Outwardly projecting faces formed along the exterior side surface of the ratchet gear engage the plunger to prevent the support leg from pivoting in a second direction, opposite to the first direction, along the plane.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 1998Date of Patent: January 9, 2001Inventor: Jeffrey W. Patent number: 5501479Abstract: An improved kickstand includes a resilient ball placed over the end of the kickstand leg. The ball has a bore corresponding in diameter to that of the kickstand leg. The ball is pressed onto the leg, with the latter penetrating the bore. Preferably, adhesive is placed within the bore to assist in securing the ball in place. An uncomplicated and inexpensive enlarged foot is thus provided to a kickstand for resisting the tendency of the kickstand leg to penetrate soft ground when bearing a portion of the weight of its associated bicycle or motorcycle. Advantages include the lack of projecting structure or gaps to entangle clothing, possessions, and vegetation when the kickstand is in the stowed position. Patent number: 4917398Abstract: A handle device for bicycles provides an adjustable rider training support point for training helpers. A handle and extension member is pivotally mounted to the rear axle and the pivoting motion conveniently places the handle proximate to the rider, avoiding the extraneous moments and forces experienced by present day fixed handles. The handle is allowed to pivot in the plane of wheel rotation, but the device is fixed in position when the optimum position is achieved. An alternate configuration limits pivoting motion to within a specific range. This allows convenient pushing, pulling and sideways support when the bicycle is at rest or being ridden. The handle is also mounted on telescoping members to conveniently adjust the handle height. The range of motion is also adjustable by a telescoping frame support or a fixture having tapered stops attached to the frame of the bicycle.Type: GrantFiled: May 8, 1989Date of Patent: April 17, 1990Assignee: Adele L. Patent number: 4869453Abstract: A deployed device projects through the spokes of a rear wheel and supports a bicycle from a two strut portion of the bicycle frame. A first bar member is placed between spokes and one end is hooked over a first frame strut. This first bar member bears up against the lower portion of a second parallel strut while held in place by the hooked first strut. A second projecting member is hinged at a first end to the other end of the first bar and engages the ground at the second end to support the bicycle in a nearly upright position. The projecting element is also capable of telescoping to allow adjustment to various sizes/styles of bicycles. The first bar member placement under and over struts (and between wheel spokes ) deters unauthorized use by requiring removal before wheel can be rotated. A padlock may also be provided to secure the stand/anti-theft device to the frame and/or fixed object to further deter unauthorized use.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 1988Date of Patent: September 26, 1989Inventor: Joseph S. Patent number: 4834405Abstract: A support member is rotatably fastened to a bracket that is configured for mounting to a bicycle seat tube just above the bottom bracket. The support member is movable between a stored position where it is generally parallel to and just behind the seat tube and a lower position to support the weight of the bicycle. A locking mechanism includes an X-shaped recess in a head of the support member and a pair of detents in the bracket. The detents extend from a projection that is flexibly connected to the bracket. The projection bends slightly to permit movement of the support member between positions.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 1987Date of Patent: May 30, 1989Inventor: James V. Dimaio

Patent number: 4810000Abstract: A training wheel assembly for a bicycle including brackets for attachment to the body of the bicycle and a pair of auxiliary wheels supported by the brackets for engagement of the ground distally of and to opposite sides of the bicycle utilizes a link member connected between each auxiliary wheel and a corresponding bracket and cables operatively attached between the front wheel of the bicycle and the link member. Each auxiliary wheel is journaled at its center to a link member for rotation relative thereto, and each link member is connected to the corresponding bracket for pivotal movement relative thereto so that when the brackets are operatively attached to the bicycle body, the center of the auxiliary wheels are pivotally movable relative to and about the bracket between a raised condition and a lowered condition.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 1987Date of Patent: March 7, 1989Inventor: Stephen R. Saunders

Patent number: 4690420Abstract: To provide for vibration-resistant, self-centering, and universal attachment of an accessory such as a luggage carrier (3) or a kickstand (4) to essentially parallel or slightly divergent support struts (8, 12) of a cycle, such as a bicycle, moped, and the like, an attachment element is formed with a central portion (18) and two lateral flange or wing portions (19, 21), the central portion having a bore (24) extending therethrough. The flange portions (19, 21) are similar wedge-shaped elements with upper and lower surfaces diverging from outer end portions (33, 34) towards the central portion (18) to define, in cross section in a plane parallel to the axis of the aperture and transverse to the struts, triangular elements having bases (22, 23) adjacent the central portion, which bases may be extended into ribs if the wing or flange portions and the central portion are formed with hollows.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 1986Date of Patent: September 1, 1987Assignee: ESGE-Marby GmbH & Co.
