Publication number: 20090108561Abstract: A curb climbing wheelchair system having left and right side attachments are designed to be attached to left and right side portions, respectively, of a standard wheelchair to enable a wheelchair occupant to climb a curb, bump or other obstruction without the aid of another individual. Each attachment includes a ramp extending from a telescoping arm that is designed to be attached, via a clamping system, to one side of the wheelchair. When not in use, the ramps are folded and stowed away on the sides of the wheelchair. During use, the ends of the ramps are placed on the curb to allow the wheelchair occupant to roll up the curb. To retrieve the ramps (now disposed behind the wheelchair), the wheelchair occupant moves the telescoping arms, if necessary with the aid of an attached circular handle, to lift the ramps thus allowing the wheelchair occupant to grab the ramps. The retrieved ramps then are stowed away until needed.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 16, 2008Publication date: April 30, 2009Inventors: Benjamin Barber, Richard Bordoni, Julia Brady, Max Brivic, Michael Cornell, James Doerhoff, Jonathan Goldszmidt, Jeffrey Rovernpor, Sahib Singh, David B. When the wheelchair is backed into the wheelchair station and engages, the occupant can elevate his or her feet by devices in the wheelchair station; the occupant can also operate reclining mechanisms. The wheelchair is designed so its backrest can nest into the backrest of the back of the wheelchair station; the backrests will pivot to recline together. A tipping means is also provided so the entire wheelchair station, including the wheelchair and its occupant, can be tilted backwards while the occupant is in the supine position, to elevate the feet higher than the head. The system is useful for therapeutic purposes, to elevate the legs, to relieve the accumulation of fluid in the legs, to aid blood circulation, and for relieving stress on the back and neck.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 19, 2006Publication date: June 19, 2008Inventor: William L. Patent number: 7374189Abstract: An adjustable matrix wheelchair seat can be mounted on a pair of rods such as are provided on the seat rails of a typical wheelchair or on any pair of rods adapted to be rigidly fixed to and aligned in a longitudinal direction relative to the frame of the wheelchair. A lateral array of spaced apart substantially inelastic straps is extended between and engaged on the rods. A longitudinal array of spaced apart substantially inelastic straps is engaged on the forwardmost and rearwardmost straps of the lateral array. The longitudinal array traverses the lateral array to define a horizontal matrix of ventilating interstices. The length of any or all of the straps of the lateral and horizontal arrays is independently adjustable to permit alteration of the pressure pattern imposed on the arrays by the patient occupying the seat.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 2003Date of Patent: May 20, 2008Inventor: Christina L. Patent number: 7370870Abstract: The present invention relates to a device for controlling a brake (11) of a wheeled walking frame (10) provided with a handle (12), including a control device (25) movably connected to the brake (11) via a connector (24) for controlling the braking effect using hand power, the control device (25) being displaceable between an idle position without braking effect and at least one braking position for braking effect. The control device (25) is movably connected to a cover (23) of the handle (12), which cover (23) is designed for receiving and partially encasing the control device (25), the control device (25) being, in the idle position, at least partially retracted into the cover (23) so that the cover (23) and the control device (25) form the handle (25). Furthermore, the control device (25) is displaceable from the idle position further into the cover (23) to the braking position while effecting the connector (24).Type: GrantFiled: March 17, 2005Date of Patent: May 13, 2008Assignee: Volaris Sweden ABInventors: Patrik Andersson, Sven-Inge Kjell, Joakim Andersson

Patent number: 7367578Abstract: The invention relates to a legrest for a wheelchair, provided with a footrest and a calfrest. In a first, supporting position (ready for use), this footrest and calfrest are designed for supporting at least a part of a leg of a user seated during use in the wheelchair. The calfrest can be moved to a non-supporting, second position (ready for transfer), wherein the calfrest is located outside the space which is occupied by the legs of a wheelchair user upon sitting down in and/or rising from the wheelchair. The pivotal direction of the calfrest is then such that the path of travel between said first and second position is located substantially outside the space occupied by the legs of the wheelchair user in the first, supporting position.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2005Date of Patent: May 6, 2008Assignee: Revab IP B.V.Inventor: Martin Jansen

Publication number: 20080097256Abstract: A controller module for a wheelchair automatically, automatedly adjusts position of the wheelchair seat with respect to the wheelchair base. The wheelchair seat is pivotally connected to the wheelchair base, and the seat is moveable with respect to the base by a powered actuator. The controller module includes a microprocessor connected to the powered actuator. The microprocessor controls operation of the powered actuator, such as by varying power to the actuator. A sensor, such as a 3-axis sensor, is connected to the microprocessor. The sensor senses seat position and signals the microprocessor of the position. The microprocessor performs a programmed sequence, to periodically adjust the seat position when the wheelchair seat is occupied. The signal from the sensor is feedback to the microprocessor for operations according to the programmed sequence. The controller module includes interfaces for use in making selections among options for the programmed sequence.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 11, 2007Publication date: April 24, 2008Inventors: Hank Torres, Randal Jay Marsden

Patent number: 7360841Abstract: An articulating leg rest is provided having a first member pivotally connected to a base frame. The base frame may be either connected to or part of a wheelchair frame. A second member is telescopically received by the first member. A drive system includes a motor-driven lead screw. First and second housings each have internally threaded portions engaged with the lead screw. A link connects the first housing to the base frame. The second housing engages the second member. Rotation of the lead screw advances the first housing along the lead screw, moving the link and causing the first and second members to rotate relative to the base frame. Rotation of the lead screw also advances the second housing along the lead screw, causing the second housing to linearly translate the second member relative to the first member.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 2005Date of Patent: April 22, 2008Assignee: Pride Mobility Products CorporationInventors: Richard T. Patent number: 7360840Abstract: An extendable and retractable leg rest includes a first member which is mounted for rotation to a support. A second member supporting a footrest is coupled to the first member and slides relative to the first member as the first and second members rotate, extending away from the first member as the first and second members are rotated into a raised position and retracting toward the first member as the first and second members are rotated into a lowered position. Movement of the second member relative to the first member is driven by a third member coupled to the second member by a gear system.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 2004Date of Patent: April 22, 2008Assignee: Pride Mobility Products CorporationInventors: Richard T. Patent number: 7360781Abstract: A foldable wheelchair comprises a substantially horizontally extending upper side frame member. An upper end of an axle plate is secured to the upper side frame member. An axle housing is secured to the axle plate. A cross brace is pivotally secured directly to the axle plate at the lower end of the axle plate. A wheel mount assembly comprises an axle sleeve mount having an internal thread. An axle sleeve has an external thread that is in threaded engagement with the internal thread of the axle sleeve mount. The axle sleeve has an internal bore that accepts a wheel axle. The internal bore is angled with respect to the axis of the external threads to provide camber to a wheel. The axle sleeve is adapted to provide lateral adjustment to the wheel by rotating the axle sleeve within the axle sleeve mount any number of complete revolutions.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 2005Date of Patent: April 22, 2008Assignee: Sunrise Medical HHG Inc.Inventors: Philip H.
