  • Patent number: 5135248
Abstract: A system and method for blocking a relative angular movement between a semi-trailer and a traction vehicle so as to limit the angular movement to a predetermined angle. A lock of a locking system in a guide plate is inserted in a central angle of a fifth wheel that supports the semi-trailer. The lock is electro-pneumatically actuated by an electric signal signifying brake actuation. This prevents an involuntary angular movement between the semi-trailer and the tractor from taking place mainly upon actuation of the brakes because of an imbalance occurring between friction forces acting on the tires.

  • Patent number: 5032821
Abstract: A stability monitoring and alarm system for a motor vehicle (e.g., a truck or a tractor trailer) provides an early warning to the driver of unsafe or potentially unsafe conditions. Front wheel desynchronization and rear load distribution are each monitored, and an alarm is generated if either the front wheels become desynchronized or the load is unevenly distributed in the rear of the vehicle. Various filtering and averaging techniques avoid false alarms and increase reliability and sensitivity. Thresholding of the front wheel desynchronization comparison is based on a model which takes turning lateral G force for particular speeds into account so that an alarm based on front wheel descynchronization is not generated because of taking turns too rapidly. Rather, such alarm is generated by monitoring shifting rear load distribution --a better and more accurate measure of vehicle stability. The resulting indications provided by an easy to read user interface warn the driver of a variety of conditions (e.g.

In the articulating function, the chassis extends to expose the articulated portion of the stinger, is locked at the forward portion to the towing tractor for articulation and when turning of the tractor relative to the chassis occurs the rear wheels turn to assist in turning the tractor towed chassis. The locking mechanism has two discrete locks, a bolster lock that is engaged only when the chassis does not articulate and a fifth wheel lock that is engaged only when the chassis does articulate.

  • Patent number: 4763916
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a jackknifing controlling system, for reducing undesirable jackknifing in an articulated vehicle, particularly with a rear drive. Sensing means is provided for measuring the angle of steering as well as the angle of articulation. At all times, the actual angle of articulation is compared to an ideal angle of articulation for the particular angle of steering, the ideal angle having been preprogrammed into a memory device. Whenever the actual angle of articulation deviates from the preprogrammed ideal angle by a predetermined amount, control actions are initiated to control the articulation. Further articulation in the direction of deviation is immediately blocked. Articulation in the opposite direction, toward the ideal, is freely allowed if the deviation exceeds a predetermined amount. If it is less than the predetermined amount, articulation, even toward the ideal angle is, damped by throttling of hydraulic flows.

Abstract: In an anti-jackknifing apparatus for a semitrailer rig, upon coupling of a semitrailer to a tractor by insertion of a king pin and a wedge on the trailer into a fifth wheel of the tractor, a pin connected to the wedge traverses a guideway to execute therealong a movement limited and attenuated by double-action hydraulic cylinders connected to hydraulic valve group in turn electrically tied to a control unit. At the guideway, limit switches are provided for setting for each direction of angular motion a predetermined maximum jackknifing angle dependent on vehicle construction. The attenuation of rotary movement between the tractor and the semitrailer is implemented by throttle valves as a function of vehicle speed as measured by a speedometer and as a function of brake pressure as measured by two pressure switches.
