  • Patent number: 11801893
Abstract: A method and system are described for controlled supplemental steering, by actuating a supplemental steering element, of a trailing implement connectable via a hitch to a pulling source, and wherein the trailing implement includes a pair of parallel wheels, a controller, a position sensing system that generates a hitch position history comprising a stored set of recent positions of the hitch point, and a steering angle actuator. The method carried out by the system includes maintaining a history of positions of the hitch, determining a target steering angle for the supplemental steering element, and actuating the steering angle actuator in accordance with the target steering angle. During the maintaining the history of positions of the hitch, the history of positions of the hitch is updated by performing a rotation operation and a translation operation on a set of coordinates of the history corresponding to previous hitch positions.

  • Patent number: 6981715
Abstract: A sliding hitch for receiving a trailer includes a rectangular base member having opposed end portions attachable to a bed of a truck. The sliding hitch further includes a plurality of stationary members aligned with each other. One of the plurality of stationary members has a groove formed therein extending substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis. A plurality of helical spring members are disposed adjacent the opposed end portions of the base member respectively. The sliding hitch further includes a hitch member having a lower portion and an upper portion having a substantially spherical shape integral with the lower portion and extending upwardly therefrom. The plurality of spring members allow the hitch member to slide forwardly and rearwardly to thereby reduce forces exerted on a truck and a trailer during operating conditions.

  • Patent number: 6726396
Abstract: A shock absorber for fifth wheel hitches for pickup trucks has a bushing embedded in memory polyurethane elastomer confined within a metal frame. The shock absorbers are mounted by brackets on the fifth wheel hitch support frame. The bushings receive pivot pins terminal to a cross beam mounting the couple assembly of the hitch. Both bushing and shock absorber frame have projections extending into the elastomer for better engagement. The projections can be studs or planar lugs. When the projections are loops of wire welded to the bushing and frame, the elastomer flows into the loops providing better engagement.

  • Patent number: 6692013
Abstract: A fifth wheel suspension assembly for damping movement between a towed vehicle and a towing vehicle is provided. The suspension assembly includes two rods on which a fifth wheel base is mounted. The fifth wheel base moves along the two rods in a direction of the longitudinal axis of the towing vehicle. The fifth wheel base defines two bores through which the rods extend. These bores also define fluid chambers disposed about the rods. Pistons are disposed about the rods within the fluid chambers and serve to dampen oscillatory movements of the towed vehicle relative to the towing vehicle. Springs disposed about the rods on either side of the base further dampen pitch motions imparted to the towing vehicle by the towed vehicle.

  • Patent number: 6685210
Abstract: An adjustable fifth wheel hitch includes a support frame having base rails that are secured to the frame of a vehicle and a pair of spaced guide rails that bridge between the base rails. The fifth wheel hitch also includes a head assembly having a jaw assembly for engaging a king pin on a trailer. A head support includes a pair of uprights having sets of rollers for mounting the head assembly for relative fore-and-aft sliding movement along the guide rails between the towing position and a maneuvering position. A releasable lock secures the head assembly in either selected position.

  • Patent number: 6592140
Abstract: The invention relates to a sliding device for a fifth wheel. The aim of the invention is to reduce the overall weight of the system consisting of vehicle frame/slide system and also to simplify its assembly. To this end, the base frame is provided with two longitudinally extending angular profiles that are linked with each other by means of two detachable and slidably mounted tie-bars. Every angular profile comprises retaining means that interact with second retaining means of the upper part in such a manner that the upper part can be displaced relative to the base frame in the longitudinal and the transverse direction. The invention device does not require an auxiliary frame that is conventionally used.

  • Patent number: 6474674
Abstract: A hitch apparatus for removably coupling a trailer to a tow vehicle provides fore and aft cushioning, vertical cushioning and roll accommodation. When it is mounted on the tow vehicle, a mounting assembly is situate in the truck bed of the tow vehicle and includes a pair of rails pivotally coupled at a first end with the truck bed. A carriage is mounted on the rails by means of a pair of rail guides, each of which slidably receives a corresponding one of the rails, and is thus slidable in directions fore and aft on the tow vehicle. A shock absorber is pivotally, diagonally coupled between the truck bed, at one end, and the lower surface of the carriage at the other end. A cradle is pivotally mounted for side-to-side rocking within the carriage. A hitch adapted to receive the trailer is mounted to the cradle. A first plate is mounted to the second ends of the rails. An air bag is mounted to the truck bed directly underneath the first plate to provide vertical cushioning.
