Wheel Steering By Articulative Movement Patents (Class 280/442)
  • Patent number: 7810823
Abstract: An oscillating in-line steering system for a pulled agricultural implement includes first and second in-line axles pivotably coupled with a frame. The system also includes at least first and second in-line wheel arrangements pivotably coupled with the first and second axles respectively. Each wheel arrangement has a plurality of pivotable wheel assemblies arranged in-line and wheel linkages coupling the in-line wheel assemblies such that in-line wheel assemblies oscillate together. A right-to-left linkage couples the wheel linkage of the first in-line wheel arrangement to the wheel linkage of the second in-line wheel arrangement so that the first in-line wheel arrangement oscillates at a steering angle proportional to that of the second in-line wheel arrangement.

Abstract: A tractor/trailer combination wherein a trailer is connected to a tractor through the connection of a kingpin with a fifth wheel is provided with a trailer steering system. Using given dimensions of the tractor/trailer combination and a measured articulation angle between the tractor and trailer during a turn, the wheels of the rear axles of the trailer are turned so that they turn approximately about the instant center established for the tractor. In this way, the trailer turns around approximately the same point as does the tractor, thus significantly eliminating off tracking.

Abstract: The trailer steering mechanism automatically steers the trailer wheels in accordance with the tow vehicle steering and articulation between the tow vehicle and trailer during backing maneuvers to facilitate backing maneuvers and to prevent or greatly reduce the possibility of jackknifing between tow vehicle and trailer. The mechanism includes a pivotally attached steering frame connected between the steerable wheels of the trailer and one or more hydraulic cylinders that, when locked, create a very strong link between the tow vehicle and the trailer and its steering system. An alternative embodiment employs two non-powered hydraulic cylinders in tandem. The cylinders are able to withstand great loads, and more importantly, are able to disengage while under great load without jamming. The cylinders provide links that exert lateral force to the trailer to push or pull the trailer into a turn while backing, in addition to controlling the steering mechanism of the trailer.

The microprocessor is used primarily for computing the probability of trailer and tractor roll-over due in part to erratic jackknifing when the vehicle is expected to move straight ahead. The probability of roll-over is converted to a time varying voltage signal for use by an electronic control module to proportionally apply brakes to those wheels whose angular velocity is greater than the average in order to drag the trailer on the side until erratic jackknifing is suppressed.

Abstract: Here invented are efficient road vehicles having special aerodynamic shapes, with stabilizing devices that enable aerodynamic efficiency. An embodiment is a articulated vehicle that is tall and narrow. It includes a carriage part that encloses a driver and passenger riding in tandem. This car is only wide enough for persons seated in single file, so it has very low projected frontal area compared with typical cars. Further, the narrow width makes a body shaped like an airship practical, where that shape is characterized by a very low drag coefficient in free flow conditions. Since this body is elevated on struts to enable such free flow aerodynamic conditions, the drag coefficient of the airship is made applicable to this road vehicle. Because this car has both low frontal area and low drag coefficient it will require minimal energy for high speed operation.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a steering device for facilitating the steering of an implement towed by a work vehicle. The towed implement, for example, a farm implement such as a seeding device, comprises a main frame having front and rear ends and at least one steerable surface engaging wheel attached to the frame. The steering device comprising a sensor means mounted on the main frame of the towed implement for sensing a misalignment of the towed implement and the work vehicle and producing a signal corresponding to the misalignment. The steering device further comprises a steering means associated with the steerable wheel for receiving the signal produced by the sensor means and for effecting movement of the steerable wheel in response to the signal until the towed implement and the work vehicle are once again realigned.

  • Patent number: 6796572
Abstract: A method and device for steering a heavy load transport vehicle includes a variable length strut which cooperates with a power steering valve. The length of the variable length strut changes as a function of tow bar rotation. This length variation is mechanically coupled to the power steering valve, which in turn controls an automatic steering system. The present invention permits mechanical steering of the transport vehicle even in the event of failure of the automatic steering system, and does so without placing mechanical stress upon the power steering valve.

Abstract: The invention refers to a forced steering device of a vehicle, with a master cylinder, which extends between the vehicle-stationary point and a point following the steering movement and is connected to a slave cylinder coupled for the forced steering of a wheel. It is proposed to have a force-limiting element absorb the movement between the vehicle-stationary point and the point following the steering movement, as soon as the pressure in a chamber of the master cylinder exceeds a predetermined threshold value.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for long vehicles to make sharp turns on city streets without running up on the curb. The back wheels of the vehicle are steered with the aid of a guide control wheel so that when the semi or truck is making a sharp turn, the rear wheels continue straight down the street to the intersection and then turn, even though the semi and the front of the trailer have already turned in a normal manner.

  • Patent number: 6513825
Abstract: A coupling arrangement between a trailer and a pulling vehicle wherein the pulling vehicle includes a first coupling plate on which the corresponding second coupling plate of the trailer is placed for obtaining locked coupling. The plates have low friction surfaces allowing the second plate to rotate on the first plate. The plates are locked to each other by a vertical pin fixed to the second coupling plate. The first coupling plate includes an open groove for the pin to get into the locking position in the end of the groove. The coupling arrangement further includes a movable locking part fixed to the second plate and being able by means of a spring to move into the groove of the first coupling plate when the plates are rotating in relation to each other.

  • Patent number: 6494476
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling the steering of a trailing section of a multi-sectioned vehicle is described. The trailing section follows the path of the first section. Data is acquired by a controller from sensors on the various sections. The controller then processes this data, generating a configuration needed for the controller-steered wheels to follow a path approximately equivalent to the path taken by the first steered section. Power is then applied by some means to steer these controller-steered wheels, forcing them into the desired configuration. The complexity of the control system can be varied with different algorithms providing alternative steering patterns as desired. This system can be extended with more trailing sections without necessitating more than minor changes to the control algorithms.

  • Patent number: 6450523
Abstract: This invention relates generally to systems used to steer trailing sections of articulated vehicles and trailers. The preferred embodiment of this invention is a steerable dolly that can be manually and/or automatically switched among multiple modes. The dolly receives its primary input from the angle of the rear of the front trailer (or other towing vehicle). There are at least two modes. In one mode the wheels of the dolly are steered in the opposite direction as the rear trailer, providing more maneuverability. In the other mode the wheels are steered in the same direction, providing a more stable mode. It is envisioned that the more stable mode would be used at high speeds while the more maneuverable mode would be used at lower speeds. There is also disclosed an alternate steering algorithm, which provides for additional maneuverability beyond that of the mode in which the wheels are steered in an opposite direction.
