With one of the balls inserted into a trailer coupler, the clamping device of the coupler can be locked as it would be when connected to a trailer hitch ball. The device and assembly of the present invention is intended to be a “filler” structure which prevents theft of a trailer using the coupler because the coupler cavity is filled and locked. Preferably, the ball ends are made of a single piece of hard plastic, nylon or metal material (although plastic is preferred for a light-weight structure) and connected to a cable that allows the device to be suspended from the coupler for use when necessary. Each ball is sized in accordance with at least two different sizes of hitch balls that are used in the coupler market.

Thus, it is easier and more economical to return the towing equipment for re-use for the next shipment of trucks. Protective material may be placed atop the truck frame to protect the webbing from sharp corners or edges of the truck frame. Chains may be used on either side of the intermediate axle to attach to the webbing. In one embodiment, sturdy strapping or other materials may be used on either side of the intermediate axle to attach to the webbing.

Further, the tow bar consists of an assembly of four or more segments that have removeable couplings by which each such segment is attached to an adjacent segment, thereby facilitating ease of assemble and disassembly of the tow bar. Such segments, when disassembled, can be easily stored in a conventional bicycle pouch that can be attached to a frame member of the bicycle.

A flexible jacket is provided around but unconnected to the stretchable cord and intermediate the first and second implements, the jacket being made of material that is relatively more rigid than the stretchable cord. The implements are preferably either first and second couplers or a coupler and a graspable member such as a handle, first and second units, one each thus equipped, being preferred.

A facility (28) is for spring loading and self-rewinding each safety spool assembly (20), so that the cable (24) can be automatically retracted as needed. A structure (30) is for attaching a distal free end of each cable (24) to the disabled motor vehicle (18), so as to keep the disabled motor vehicle (18) being towed connected to and behind the tow truck (16) in case of accidental separation during a towing operation.

    Abstract: A self locking chain device for locking a chain to a vehicle comprises an elongated cross bar having an upwardly extending arm attached to each end thereof. Each arm comprises first and second arbors which define a receiving slot for receiving a first interior link of a chain and configured in such a manner to enable two adjacent contiguous links to lock the interior link therein. Both first and second arbors are provided with cusps or projections for limiting passage of the chain link to and from the receiving slot. The first arbor also is provided with a concavity. A second contiguous or selected link, serving as a locking link, is slid over and down the first arbor and to the concavity, thereby double locking the first interior link since the opening between the cusps or projections is less than the combined diameter of the interior link and locking link.

    Abstract: An apparatus for loading a motorcycle onto another vehicle. The motorcycle loader comprises a wheel saddle positionable on a bed of the vehicle, a yoke assembly connectable to front forks of the motorcycle, an auxiliary winch mounted on the wheel saddle and having a cable connected to the yoke assembly, and a remote control switch for controlling the winch. The remote control may be temporarily clamped into the handlebars of the motorcycle, and an operator sitting on the motorcycle may energize the auxiliary winch by alternately pressing and releasing a push-button switch on the remote control. The winch thus gradually pulls the front wheel of the motorcycle into the wheel saddle so that the motorcycle can be subsequently tied down to the bed of the vehicle. A strap retainer for retaining a loose end of a strap in the yoke assembly is also provided.

    Abstract: A safety chain for securing a towed vehicle to a towing vehicle and which has a safety basket for limiting downward movement of a tongue of the towed vehicle relative to a hitch of the towing vehicle to prevent the tongue from contacting the roadway. The chain is attached to at least one of the vehicles by a latch that has a shackle for engagement with a mount of the vehicle and a catch carried by the shackle that can be spring biased toward its latched position and which is movable to a position disposed from its latched position to unlatch the latch. Preferably, the catch can be retained in the latched position by a retainer that engages the catch and shackle. Preferably, to secure the latch to a vehicle to deter theft of the chain, the retainer can be a lock. To secure the safety chain to the tongue to prevent theft of the tongue and preferably the towed vehicle, a securing chain and a locking chain are wrapped around the tongue to prevent withdrawal of the tongue free of the chains.
