When the retaining bracket is pivoted to its pin-retaining position, a strap is positioned over the drawbar pin. Outward movement of the pin causes it to contact a forward portion of the strap forward of the pivot axis causing the retaining bracket to contact the hanger bracket thereby preventing pivoting of the retaining bracket in a first direction. The retaining bracket pivots by gravity to the pin-retention position.

    Abstract: A hitch apparatus has a tongue member with a weight bearing surface and an opposite free surface, and defining a bushing hole extending substantially vertically. A bushing has a cylindrical portion defining a drawpin hole with an outside diameter equal to an inside diameter of the bushing hole and a flange extending outward from one end of the cylindrical portion. The flange has a tongue surface adjacent to the cylindrical portion of the bushing, and an opposite wearing surface. The cylindrical portion of the bushing extends into the bushing hole such that the tongue surface of the flange bears against the weight bearing surface of the tongue member, and the bushing has a Rockwell Scale hardness greater than a Rockwell Scale hardness of the tongue member. Different bushings may define a variety of drawpin hole diameters to suit different drawpins.

    Abstract: A hitch coupler includes a frame having vertically spaced apart plates extending outwardly therefrom. Each plate includes a pin receiving aperture adapted to receive a pin member therethrough. The pin member is moveable between extended and retracted positions. A lock mechanism is pivotally coupled to the frame member and includes a locking flange which is adapted to engage the guide slot when the pin member is in the extended position. The trailer is coupled to the vehicle using a trailer hitch using at least one intelligent bolt or fastener. The intelligent fastener has structural characteristics similar to those of traditional bolts for fastening a trailer to a vehicle (e.g., shear strength, diameter, etc.), but the intelligent fastener is configured to sense forces at a junction between the trailer and the vehicle. An ESC system receives force readings from the intelligent fastener sensors along with signals from a plurality of other sensors and determines one or more characteristics of the trailer. The ESC system compensates the motion of the vehicle based on the forces sensed at the junction and the characteristics of the trailer.
