  • Patent number: 7559564
Abstract: An outwardly deploying airbag system can maintain the internal pressure of an airbag for a required period without vainly increasing the maximum internal pressure of the airbag during inflation. When a sensor detects a collision with a pedestrian, an inflator performs a first gas injection step. An airbag is thereby deployed into a final deployment shape. Subsequently, when the internal pressure of the airbag falls to a predetermined pressure because of leakage of gas through vent holes, and a sensor predicts or detects a collision with a pedestrian, the inflator performs a second gas injection step. Consequently, the internal pressure of the airbag remains high for a long period, and the airbag sufficiently absorbs an impact whenever the pedestrian hits the airbag. The pressure and amount of gas injected in the first gas injection step can be made smaller than in related art, and the required airbag strength is reduced.

Abstract: An airbag for a front passenger's seat internally includes a communication port defined by an inner joint that joins inner circumferential edges of a pair of inner panels. The airbag includes at a rear side a recess and a pair of raised regions. The airbag further includes a contact portion where outer surfaces of the inner panels are in face-to-face contact proximate the circumference of the communication port at full inflation. The contact portion is created and maintained by an inner pressure of the airbag at full inflation that acts on the panels of the airbag, and is not formed if the inner pressure is less than that at full inflation of the airbag.

Abstract: A method of producing a gas generator includes arranging an igniter in an inner chamber surrounded by a housing of the gas generator. The igniter is supported in a first direction on a part of the gas generator and in the first direction opposite a mounting orifice of the housing. The method includes arranging a sealing element in the mounting orifice to seal the mounting orifice. The sealing element presses over a bearing area deformable in the first direction with a force acting in the first direction against a first bearing area of the igniter and forms a gas-tight joint between the sealing element and the igniter. A side of the sealing element facing the part of the gas generator in the first direction abuts against a side of the part of the gas generator to limit deformation of the bearing area of the sealing element in the first direction.
