  • Patent number: 5288107
Abstract: The present invention provides a label having multiple information fields. The label includes two substantially parallel vertical columns. Each of the vertical columns is divided into at least two cells. The upper and lower cells of the first vertical column each have several blocks of optical character recognition alphanumeric characters to identify unique information in regard to the information to be stored in the media, the media, the label itself or the site in which the media is to be stored. The characters and/or the cell background can be color-coded to provide additional information. The lower cell of the second vertical column includes a single block having a string of alphanumeric characters with a color-coded background to correlate to the latter two characters of the string. This information is provided to identify the storage site of the media. The upper cell of the second vertical column includes a machine-readable indicia, such as a bar code.

  • Patent number: 5083816
Abstract: Disclosed is a human and machine readable label which is divided into three areas. The top portion of the label, which is typically half the length of the label, is divided into two columns. One of these columns contains a bar code with a quiet zone at each end of the bar code. This bar code contains the entire message of the label in a machine readable bar code format. The other column of the top portion of the label contains the first few characters of the human readable portion of the message. The bottom portion of the label contains the remainder of the human readable message and is printed throughout the entire width of the label, thus allowing the characters to be a much larger size that the human readable characters contained in the top portion of the label. The label is of a size that allows it to be placed on one end of a 3480 style tape cartridge, as well as allowing it to be placed on other types of media such a file folders.

  • Patent number: 4978143
Abstract: An exemplary book indexing system according to the invention includes an index table (10 or 12) which has thereon a first series (23) comprising names in alphabetical order of book chapters or similar parts to be indexed, and a second series (24) comprising numbers in non-numerical order, one number of the second series being aligned with each word of the first series. A plurality of tabs (13) each bearing one of the numbers in the second series (24) may be attached to appropriate pages of a book (10) so that the chapters thereof may be quickly referenced. A tab layout strip (14) aids in placing tabs (13) manually on book (10.) The indexing system according to the invention is especially useful for books such as the bible which are frequently cited by the name of the biblical book in which a passage appears.

  • Patent number: 4544182
Abstract: The present invention relates to the field of office file labeling and discloses a label which is less expensive to manufacture and to apply to a normal numeric filing system. The label employs a color-coding system and includes perforations which permit unwanted portions of the label to be removed prior to application. The label is for numeric end-tab filing and is reversible about its central fold-line. Individual digits are rotated 180 degrees with respect to corresponding digits on the opposite side of the fold-line so that the digits are in readable orientation in either the reversed or non-reversed condition.

  • Patent number: 4204639
Abstract: The specification describes a label used for the codification of various articles such as files, tapes, cassettes, and the like. The labels are color-coded and each label bears to one side of its colored field a machine readable marking with a pair of visual readable indicium in the colored field. Each label is identifiable by color, by its machine readable marking, and by its visual indicium. When working with labels as described above, there is no need to provide additional labels to complete the code. The code on each article in the system is a unique one, so that each article is readily discernable from all other articles in the system by both visual and machine inspection.

  • Patent number: 3937493
Abstract: Labels for file folders that each has a self-adhesive backed surface and in a non-folded position has a front surface with a given letter of the alphabet printed on one half and the same letter of the alphabet printed on the other half at right angles to the first mentioned letter for permitting the label to be used either for top tab filing or end tab filing. In either case, with the label properly positioned on the file folder, and the file properly placed in a vertical position in a file cabinet, one letter will be upright on the desired side of the tab to which the label is adhered. Thirteen distinctive colors are keyed to the first 13 letters of the alphabet as a solid block, and the same 13 colors are used for the second half of the alphabet with strips (bands) through the colored portions of the labels.
