The end surface of the fitting is chamfered, preferably in a concave profile, so that the weld profile subtends an angle of from about 100 degrees to about 120 degrees, rather than the customary 90 degrees. The pipe has no dam or other protuberance to confine the bead of added metal. Prior to welding, the fitting may have an annular lip immediately surrounding the surface of the pipe and may also have a ring spaced from the lip. The ring may be integral with the fitting and spaced from the lip by thin, radially spaced metal bars or may be separate from the fitting.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 2003Date of Patent: March 14, 2006Inventor: Nitin J. Patent number: 6939083Abstract: A method of welding together the ends of outer pipe sections (16A, 16B) of pipe-in-pipe pipeline to be laid on a seabed employs an annular member (5) interposed between adjacent lengths of pipe. The annular member comprises a first axial part (11) which fits within the end of the first outer pipe section, and a flange part (12) which is interposed between the adjacent ends of the two lengths of outer pipe sections (16A, 16B) to be joined. The flange part (12) of the annular member (5) projects radially outwardly beyond the inside of the outer pipe sections (16A, 16B) and terminates radially inwardly of the outside of the outer pipe sections (16A, 16B), and provides some of the welding material for the joint.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 2002Date of Patent: September 6, 2005Assignee: Saipem S.p.A.Inventors: Luciano Tosi, Renato Bonelli

Patent number: 6921115Abstract: A coupling for joining two pipes in end-to-end relationship includes flanges which are sealably secured to end sections of pipes to be connected. The flanges form front inclined faces and adjacent front flanges that are slidably received within opposite end openings of a cylindrical coupling. A groove or shoulder is formed at the rear end of the front flanges that cooperate with jaws extending from the ends of the cylindrical coupling to secure the received pipe end portions in the cylindrical coupling to thereby join the pipes together. One or more gaskets fit in the cylindrical coupling between the ends thereof with gasket arms that abut against the inclined surface so that fluid pressure in the pipes force the gasket arms against the inclined faces to provide a seal between the joined pipes. A stop may be provided to limit the sliding travel of the cylindrical coupling with respect to the flanges.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 2003Date of Patent: July 26, 2005Inventor: Ajit Singh Gill

Patent number: 6905147Abstract: A coupling member for connecting a part, provided for receiving or dispensing fuel and made primarily of HDPE (high-density polyethylene), to a fluid line has first, second, and third components made of meltable material. The third component forms a heat fusion joint with the part for receiving or dispensing fuel and has an undesirably high permeability and swelling capacity relative to fuel. The third component is connected to the first component by material bonding and positive-locking action. The second component has greater fuel blocking capacity and higher strength than the third component. The second component is embedded in the third component. A volume ratio of second and third components is selected such that combined properties of the second and third components concerning permeability, strength, and volume changes by swelling are approximated to these same properties of the second component. The first and third components are heat-fusible to one another.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 2003Date of Patent: June 14, 2005Assignee: Rasmussen GmbHInventor: Janos Kertesz

Patent number: 6866297Abstract: A welded structure constituted of a fuel filling container having an opening, and a welded part including a pipe-shaped section whose one end is disposed in the opening of the fuel filling container. A welding section is fixedly disposed around the outer periphery of the pipe-shaped section. The welding section is welded through a welding surface to the outer surface of the fuel filling container. In the welded structure, the welding section of the welded part includes a welding strength providing layer and a fuel permeation resistance layer which are coaxial with the pipe-shaped section of the welded part and radially laminated to define the annular welding surface. Additionally, at least an inner peripheral surface portion of the pipe-shaped section and an outer peripheral surface portion of the other end portion of the pipe-shaped section are formed of a fuel permeation resisting material.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 2003Date of Patent: March 15, 2005Assignee: Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.Inventors: Katsumi Morohoshi, Hiroshi Kumagai, Masami Honma, Tomoyuki Satou, Mitsuo Yamada

Patent number: 6863315Abstract: In order to attach a fuel system component such as a pipe nipple to a fuel tank having a polyethylene outer layer, the fuel system component is made from a first material which may have desirable characteristics such as resistance to creep, but which may not be easily weldable to the polyethylene outer layer of the tank. The flange member is used for attachment to the body portion of the fuel system component by welding and for attachment to the polyethylene layer of the tank. To inhibit hydrocarbon vapour flow through through the flange member, the flange member includes a barrier layer which extends from one side of the flange to the other and which surrounds the central aperture. In another embodiment of the invention, the flange member is made from a material which has the necessary barrier properties.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 2003Date of Patent: March 8, 2005Assignee: Salflex Polymers Ltd.Inventor: Changize Sadr

Patent number: 6860526Abstract: A first half part includes a second raised portion and a third raised portion respectively on the inner side of the hollow body and on the outer side of the hollow body with respect to a first raised portion, the second raised portion and the third raised portion being separated from the first raised portion with a spacing and being lower than the first raised portion. A second half part includes a third raised portion on the outer side of the hollow body with respect to a first raised portion, the third raised portion being separated from the first raised portion with a spacing and being lower than the first raised portion. An internal member includes a second raised portion on the inner side of the hollow body with respect to a first raised portion, the second raised portion being separated from the first raised portion with a spacing and being lower than the first raised portion. As a result, there is provided a high quality hollow body that can be provided at low cost and is cosmetically appealing.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 2003Date of Patent: March 1, 2005Assignees: GP Daikyo Corporation, Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Yutaka Miyahara, Toshiki Miyachi, Yoshihiro Akiyama
