  • Patent number: 5297819
Abstract: A quick connect/disconnect pipe coupling comprising a female receptacle member, a locking collar adapted to be slidably engaged over one end of the female receptacle member, and a male plug member adapted to be inserted into the collar engaged female receptacle member to form a tight connection therebetween. The collar includes radial locking flanges for engaging cooperating annular ridges on the plug and receptacle members, respectively. Slidable movement of the collar toward the receptacle member disengages the locking flange on the collar from the annular ridge on the male plug member thereby enabling a quick disconnect of the female receptacle member and collar from the male plug member.

  • Patent number: 5282655
Abstract: A connector assembly connects a hub connector to a wellhead housing by utilizing a collet. The collet has an upper internal projection that engages the hub connector and a lower internal projection that engages the flange on the wellhead housing. An actuator ring moves the collet from an unlocked to a locked position, the actuator ring moving axially. A drive nut, when rotated, will move the actuator ring downward. Load screws extending through the drive nut force the actuator ring further downward after the drive nut has reached its lower position. Release pins extending through the actuator ring, when rotated inward, will pry against a release surface to move the actuator ring upward relative to the drive nut.

Abstract: A hose coupling wherein a sleeve is made of one piece with axially parallel elastic arms engageable with an external rib of a pipe which is inserted into one end portion of the sleeve. The other end portion of the sleeve is sealingly connected with and surrounds an end of a hose, and the sleeve is surrounded by a turnable or axially movable locking ring having prongs which are caused to bear against the adjacent arms so that the arms are urged against the rib. The sleeve has one or more elastic tongues which can snap behind the adjacent portion or portions of the locking ring to hold the ring in the operative position and to indicate that the ring is maintained in the operative position. The arms have internal grooves for reception of adjacent portions of the rib.

  • Patent number: 5209528
Abstract: A plug coupling for providing a pressure-sealed connection to a device having a cylindrical connector. The coupling has a tube-like support element having a front portion provided with a sealing ring and a rear portion formed as an inlet part. Elongated clamping jaws are linked to the support element and extend in a generally axial direction. The clamping jaws are arranged concentrically around a longitudinal axis of the support element and have free ends radially displaceable. A sleeve surrounds the support element and is shiftable in longitudinal direction and has a front end portion provided with a rim for engaging peripheral surfaces of the clamping jaws for locking them in an engaged position. The sleeve is urged into the engaged position either by a spring or by pressure. An arresting device blocks the sleeve to prevent this engagement of the plug coupling when fluid pressure is applied thereto.

  • Patent number: 5083819
Abstract: A new capture device comprising a plurality of axially extending tangs on one of a pair of complementary fittings in a fluid coupling and a polygonal circumferential groove on the other fitting adapted to engage the tangs. Upon rotational engagement of the fittings the tangs engage the polygonal groove and "ratchet" about the junctures between the flats until the coupling is tight. Although not limited to particular materials, the new capture device is particularly suited to very tough, strong and hard materials such as titanium, stainless steel and inconel alloy because the effectiveness of the capture device is dependent upon the stiffness of the tangs. The new device prevents vibrational disassembly of the complementary fittings without preventing disassembly solely with wrenches. Moreover, the complementary fittings and capture device can be repeatedly assembled and disassembled without any damage to the threads or capture device.

The male half-coupler possess, on its external surface, an annular raised profile capable of being coupled with a corresponding annular raised profile present on the internal surface of the female half-coupler close to its end, the female half-coupler being equipped, starting from its end, wih axial slits defining, along its entire surface, a plurality of outwardly elastically flexible lamellar elements, adapted to permit the fitting of the female half-coupler over the male half-coupler and the coupling together of the respective raised annular profiles. An axially movable ring is also provided, capable of being fitted over the female half-coupler and of being blocked in position for preventing radial deformations at the end of zone of the female half-coupler itself.

  • Patent number: 4742874
Abstract: An improved annular seal between tubular members in a subsea wellhead having an annular seal member with a U shape in section with the opening facing upwardly and two interengaged annular wedges for energizing the sealing surfaces of the inner and outer portions of the seal member at different levels. The interengagement of the wedges includes sufficient play to provide proper energizing of both inner and outer sealing surfaces at the same time. Further, the inner sealing surface is positioned at a much higher level than the outer sealing surface and close to the upper end of the inner member in which it is to seal to minimize the setting force for the inner sleeve and to minimize the amount of drag the seal will incur when retrieved. Also, the location of the outer sealing surface close to the inner member shoulder minimizes the reaction path of the lockdown sleeve.

Abstract: An arrangement in a remote-controllable subsea connector wherein the connector components may be locked together by the aid of a ring of collet fingers (5) cooperating with an actuator ring (17) controllable in the axial direction of said connector. In order to provide secure and efficient locking of said connector without the necessity of exerting very high pressures, and in order to permit compensation of tolerance variations in the connector said actuator ring (17) is provided with a maneuver ring (8) and an annular shaped retaining means which may consist of a ring member, for instance of titium alloy or carbon fibres, or a series of retaining members (7) placed in an annular shape on the inside of said maneuver ring (8), in contact with said fingers (5) in said collet finger ring. Said retaining members (7) cooperate with said maneuver ring (8) via conical surfaces (19, 13).

A pressure responsive means is positioned in a tubing string uphole a packer and includes a piston movable in response to a pressure differential between the upper annulus pressure and the pressure inside the tubing string. The movement of the piston is transferred through a second, concentric tubing string to a firing head on a perforating gun below the packer. The system includes a means for simultaneously decoupling the concentric tubing strings below the packer to drop the perforating gun to the bottom of the well.

  • Patent number: 4708376
Abstract: The collet-type connector (10) comprising an upper body member (20) having a plurality of collet segments (52), a cam ring (64) movable relative to the upper body member (20) to move said collet segments (52) into a detachable connection of the connector to a subsea wellhead (14, 14a). The cam ring (64) and collet segments (52) have sets of camming surfaces whereby a first set (86, 92) cooperate to pivot the collet segments (52) initially toward the wellhead (14, 14a) and whereby a second set (96, 104) serves to urge the collet segments (52) further to clamp the connector (10) to the subsea wellhead (14, 14a). When the second set (96, 104) of camming surfaces function, the first set (86, 92) no longer function to rotate the collet segments, thus reducing the power requirement for urging the collet segments (52) into clamping engagement to only one set at a time, even though both sets together serve to aid in holding the collet segments in clamping engagement with the wellhead after final engagement.

  • Patent number: 4699403
Abstract: Fully integrated self-contained connectors for standard tubes include a first annular member having an axial bore preferably of a continuously hollow-cylindrical configuration for receiving ferrules of those standard tubes. A locking arrangement peripheral of the first annular member carries locking members extending through openings in that first annular member for retaining a ferrule at a tube retention shoulder in a locking position. At least one further annular member is axially slidable on the first annular member and houses the locking arrangement outside that first annular member. The locking members are actuated to a locking position upon axial sliding of the further annular member in one direction. Conversely, the locking members are actuated to a release position upon axial sliding movement of the further annular member in another direction. The further annular member may define one or more internal ramps for that purpose.
