  • Patent number: 7083204
Abstract: A coupling for joining metal pipes or pipe sections end-to-end to form a pipe assembly. A plastic cuff is formed on one of the pipe ends and a mating, second plastic cuff is formed on the other pipe end. In one embodiment, a wire hoop is mounted over each pipe end, the hoops are rotatable around the associated pipe ends to align the hoops, and bolt assemblies spanning the two hoops are used to tighten the hoops axially, to thereby clamp the pipe ends and compress the cuffs between the pipe ends and provide a leak-proof joint. The cuffs are selected from configurations including tongue-and-groove and bell-and-spigot. The cuffs can be formed on the pipe ends in the shop, then the pre-cuffed pipe sections can be readily assembled into stable, leak-proof, corrosion-resistant lengths of pipe in the field.

  • Patent number: 7077197
Abstract: A method and apparatus for a wellbore expandable connection is disclosed. The connection may include a pin having an outward tapered threaded section and a box having an inward tapered threaded section. The threaded sections form a connection of a predetermined integrity upon make-up. An embodiment of the connection includes at least one interface area of the connection that lacks intimate contact between the pin and the box upon initial make-up. Either the box or the pin, or both, have a friction surface at the interface area. Radial expansion of the connection places the pin in contact with the box at the interface area such that the friction surface between them locks the connection. In one embodiment, the connection includes a receptacle profiled in a portion of the box that provides space within the connection for material that extrudes from the pin during expansion of the connection.

  • Patent number: 7062834
Abstract: A process for forming a metallic tubular connector of the type having a cylindrical shell which extends circumferentially about a tubular body for joining said tubular connector to a conduit. The process involves using a first forming machine to form a first peripheral bead in a first end portion of a tubular metallic body, having a substantially uniform diameter and wall thickness, reduce the outside diameter of a second end portion, and slope an intermediate surface portion. Then, a second end forming machine tool, carrying a metallic socket, freely receives the tubular body second end portion, contacts the sloped intermediate surface portion, forms a second peripheral bead adjacent the first peripheral bead, while an annular end surface of the socket is compressed and locked between the first and second beads. Further, the tubular body is manufactured from a 5000 series aluminum alloy material.

  • Patent number: 6974162
Abstract: A coupling assembly for plastic pipes including a nut, a body, a grip-ring, and a seal. The nut can engage the body through appropriate threads and includes a hooked projection having a sloping surface adapted to abut against and provide a force on a corresponding surface of the grip ring within the body. A pipe is inserted through the nut, grip-ring, and seal into the body. Tightening of the nut causes its sloped surface to engage and the grip ring to be forced both radially and longitudinally. Radial compression results in the grip-ring engaging the pipe whilst longitudinal forcing causes it to be forced into the body simultaneously abutting against and compressing the seal whilst dragging the pipe further into the body. The nut and the body may further have tapered surfaces that are brought together as the grip-ring is forced into the body. The physical connection between the body and the nut provides reinforcing for the nut, a feature especially useful when dealing with soft plastics.

  • Patent number: 6857670
Abstract: An apparatus for creating a permanent, leak-proof plastic tubing joint including a length of plastic tubing, a fitting component and a device capable of generating a local electromagnetic field. The fitting component is manufactured of a polymer containing nonpolymeric particles capable of absorbing a specific frequency of electromagnetic energy. An end of the length of plastic tubing is slidably inserted into the fitting component. When the tubing has been fully inserted, a device is activated to generate a local electromagnetic field surrounding the fitting component. The nonpolymeric particles absorb the electromagnetic energy and increase in temperature. This temperature increase causes the fitting component to begin melting at the interface with the plastic tubing while at the same time causing the end of plastic tubing to become pliable. The electromagnetic field is then removed and both the fitting component and the end of plastic tubing cool to ambient temperature.

Abstract: A drill string includes a plurality of tubular members each having a connection with a pin connector and a box connector on adjacent tubular members. The pin connector has an external thread with negative load flanks and positive stab flanks, adapted for threadingly engaging an internal thread second threads with negative load flanks and positive stab flanks on the box connector of the adjacent tubular member. The positive stab flanks have corner radiuses and the negative load flanks have radiuses forming a S-shape. The pin connector has an outer groove for receiving a protuberance on the terminal end of the box member forming locking shoulders. The protuberance and groove have contoured surfaces providing large metal-to-metal contact for preventing the contoured surfaces from sliding during over-torquing and cyclic bending of the drill string. The negative load flanks and locking shoulders lock the connection together.
