Abstract: A shoulder ring, for installation in a threaded pipe coupling between the installed pin ends of two pipes being connected by the coupling, has opposing end faces and a central opening, and may lobate or circular in shape. The shoulder ring provides enhanced axial retention within the coupling by incorporating a thread element which engages the internal threads of the coupling to prevent or deter displacement of the ring from the coupling. Alternatively, enhanced axial retention may be provided by means of an interference or interlocking fit that is plastically induced during the ring installation process. The shoulder ring may be of lobate or circular configuration, with the axial retention of lobate embodiments being further enhanced by forces acting radially outward against the coupling due to elastic deformation of the ring during installation. Also disclosed are tools for installing the shoulder rings in a threaded coupling.

  • Patent number: 7651137
Abstract: A pipeline (20) that lies primarily in the sea and that is formed of multiple steel pipe sections connected in tandem at pipe joints, includes a protective coating around the pipe sections and around the pipe joints. Each pipe section is first covered, at an onshore facility, by an initial coating (30, 32) that extends along at least 80% of the pipe section length while leaving its ends uncovered, to leave gripping areas (40, 42) where the steel of the pipe is uncovered so the pipe can be clamped by tools such as those with steel jaws to position and slide it axially, or turn it, or prevent it from turning. After a pair of pipe sections are connected, a completion coating (50) is applied around the pipe joint to leave the pipeline with a coating around all of it.

  • Patent number: 7621570
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing an expandable threaded connection between segments of expandable tubulars. Threaded connections are machined into pre-expanded ends of tubulars. Once the threaded connections are machined into the pre-expanded ends, two joints of tubulars are connected using the threads, thus creating a pre-expanded threaded connection. After a tubular string is made up and lowered into a wellbore, the entire length of the string is expanded using known methods for expanding tubulars. During the downhole expansion operation, the pre-expanded threaded connections experience minimal expansion. Abstract: An aluminum riser assembly has a plurality of riser joints connectable together to form a riser string. When upper and lower joints are assembled, clamps support auxiliary pipes for carrying hydraulic lines. A drive rotates a sleeve rotatably supported on the upper joint, and the sleeve rotates a union nut rotatably disposed on the upper joint. As the union nut rotates, it moves axially along the riser joint and threads onto the lower joint. The union nut is tightened until it engages an external collar to complete the coupling between the upper and lower riser joints. The entire process can then be repeated for additional upper riser joints to make up a riser string.

  • Publication number: 20090250926
Abstract: A method associated with the selection of tubulars for hydrocarbon production is described. In particular, the method is associated with the evaluation of performance limits of threaded connections. In this method, constituents of an evaluation group of threaded connections are determined via model analysis. Then, physical testing on a first group of threaded connections in the evaluation group is conducted. Modeling analysis on the first group and a second group of threaded connections is performed, wherein the second group are not physically tested. Once modeled, the results from the physical testing and the modeling analysis are compared to assess a characteristic performance factor for the first group. Then, the characteristic performance factor is applied to the second group, and the performance limits are defined based on this characteristic performance factor.

The box member has a box thread with a box thread crest, a box thread root, a box load flank, and a box stab flank. At least one of the pin thread crest, the pin load flank, the pin stab flank, the box thread crest, the box load flank, and the box stab flank has at least one perturbation formed thereon. Upon a selected make-up of the pin member with the box member, an increased contact stress exists between the pin thread and the box thread at the at least one perturbation.

  • Patent number: 7452007
Abstract: An expandable threaded connection between segments of expandable tubulars. The present invention utilizes two complementary thread segments. The first segment of the threaded connection utilizes standard box and pin threads. In the second segment of the threaded connection, material is removed from the stab flank of the pin threads to reduce the standard width of the pin threads, while the box threads of the second segment are standard thread width. The use of the reduced thread width in the pin threads of the second segment allows for a loose fit between the pin threads of the second segment and the box threads of the second segment. The loose fit between the pin and box threads of the second segment allows radial and axial movement between those threads without causing disengagement of the threaded connection during the expansion process.

  • Patent number: 7431347
Abstract: An elongated drive string assembly comprising a plurality of hollow sucker rods and connecting elements with an axis, connected together and between a drive head located at the surface of an oil well and a rotary pump located deep down hole in an oil well. Each hollow sucker rod has at least a first end comprising an internal female threaded surface engaging an external male threaded surface on a connecting element, such as a nipple. In order to further optimize the stress distribution between the elements, frustro-conical, non-symmetrical threads with a differential diametral taper are used. Preferably two torque shoulders with a maximized mean diameter and cross-sectional area are used to resist storing reactive torque in the drive string. The nipple free end defines a second torque shoulder that adds to the torque transmission during make-up while also defining a small seal at that free end to decrease corrosion erosion problems.
