  • Patent number: 6729658
Abstract: The threading of a threaded tubular element includes at least one tangential multiple radius junction zone at the thread root, in particular on the load flank side. This zone include a principal arc with a radius where the support circle cuts the flank at a point. The tangent to this circle makes a strictly positive angle with the flank. The secondary arcs have lower radii that effect the tangential junction of the principal arc on one side to the flank and on the other side to the thread root. The radius of the principal are larger than that of the standard circle which passes through and which would alone constitute a tangential junction zone. Such a threaded element provides a threaded tubular connection which incorporates good resistance to both static and cyclic stresses.

  • Publication number: 20030234538
Abstract: An expandable threaded connection between segments of expandable tubulars that provides multiple sealing points along the pin and box members that can withstand high pressure is disclosed. The present invention utilizes a gap that is created between the pin nose and the back of the box member when the threaded connection is made up and a reverse trapping angle machined into the pin nose end and the back of the box. The radial expansion of the tubulars causes axial movement of the pin nose and the box member until the pin nose is in contact with the back of the box member, thereby closing the gap and forcing the pin nose into sealing engagement with the back of the box member. The reverse trapping angle forces the nose of the pin member outwardly (i.e., toward the outer diameter of the expandable tubular string) as it is forced into contact with the back of the box member during the expansion process.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing an expandable threaded connection between segments of expandable tubulars is disclosed. Threaded connections are machined into pre-expanded ends of tubulars. Once the threaded connections are machined into the pre-expanded ends, two joints of tubulars are connected using the threads, thus creating a pre-expanded threaded connection. After a tubular string is made up and lowered into a wellbore, the entire length of the string is expanded using known methods for expanding tubulars. During the downhole expansion operation, the pre-expanded threaded connections experience minimal expansion. The minimal downhole expansion of the pre-expanded threaded connections allows the threaded connections to maintain their sealing ability and coupling strength.

The recess is adapted to receive a head portion having a conical cross-section with a rounded apex, the radius of curvature of which is greater than that of the recess's apex providing a seal with improved stress dispersal properties upon application of torque. The wall (33) of the cone's in-use outwardly facing surface on the male portion (10) can subtend an angle of from 28-36° to the longitudinal axis of the pipe. The corresponding cone wall on the female portion can subtend an angle of from 28-38° with the same axis. The male portion (10) can comprise a second stress dispersing surface (41), concave in shape.

Abstract: A rotating inner member is used to drive a downhole tool housed within the hollow outer member of a dual-member drill string. The downhole tool preferably will be adapted to receive rotational energy from the inner member. In a preferred embodiment, the downhole tool is an electric generator connected to a downhole electric device. In another preferred embodiment the downhole tool is a mechanical transmission that uses the rotational energy from the inner member to drive a non-electric tool, such as a downhole hammer. This invention will increase the consistency and efficiency of downhole energy production.

One element has a constant pitch throughout and the other element, with two sections extending in each case from the ends of the threaded length is likewise provided with a constant pitch. The other element has more than two sections with a pitch which is constant within the section but is different from the first-mentioned element, it being the case that the pitch difference at least of one section is in the opposite direction, in terms of sign, to the rest of the sections. The pitch difference of one section is at least double that of the adjacent sections and in the screwed-together position, in the section with the large pitch difference, the thread play and the thread tolerances are compensated and the load flank of one corner tooth of this section, with the guide flank of the other corner tooth, produces the basic bracing.

Abstract: The surface areas available for absorbing compressive loading of a threaded connection are increased by increasing the engaged area of a torque shoulder in the connection and by reducing the spacing between the stab flanks of the threads. The areas are increased by increasing the dimensions of the components and by decreasing the machine tolerances permitted in manufacturing the components. The gap in the connection adjacent the torque shoulder is reduced so that the contact surface area of the torque shoulder is increased while the close proximity of the surrounding cylindrical walls of the connection reduces voids that can receive plastic deformation of the torque shoulder corners. The surfaces adjacent the torque shoulder are cylindrical in shape rather than being tapered to reduce machining costs and increase the speed of manufacture of the connection.

Abstract: An adapter and coupler assembly has two externally threaded adapters, one left-hand threaded and the other right-hand threaded, and an internally threaded coupler, one end left-hand threaded, the other end right-hand threaded. The coupler threadedly engages the two adapters simultaneously, tightening on both by rotating in one direction, providing a fluid-tight seal. Each adapter has the other end barbed for connection to hose. The coupler and the two adapters each have an external annular flange which is perforated to receive seizing wire or wire ties to prevent the components from unthreading. The coupler has a multi-sided barrel at its center, and the adapters have a multi-sided nut portion, to provide purchase by a wrench-type tool. Each component may also have a mark indicating the starting point of the thread, to facilitate engagement of the components. The assembly is especially useful in fluid-carrying systems of boats, recreational vehicles, and campers.

Abstract: A thread for expandable downhole tubular connections is disclosed. It features a locking pattern on the pin and box, which engages upon expansion of the connection. The locking pattern compensates for longitudinal shrinkage away from a torque shoulder, as a result of expansion. A resilient seal can be incorporated into the design with pin to box clearance disappearing around the seal as a result of expansion. Resilient seals can be used in tandem to trap atmospheric pressure between them. The wellbore hydrostatic pressure helps engage the locking feature by pushing the box into the pin, helped by the trapped low pressure between the seals.

Abstract: During conditions of use of a threaded joint comprising a box portion and a pin portion used to threadingly join oil well pipes, the stress acting on the outer surface of the box portion is prevented from exceeding the yield strength of the base metal of the joint, and the occurrence of stress corrosion in the joint portion is prevented. Specifically, the amount of thread interference T is controlled to be at most a specified value calculated as a function of the inner diameter D1 of the pin portion, the thread effective diameter D2 at the basic diameter position, the outer diameter D3 of the box portion, the internal pressure Pi, and the yield strength &sgr;y and Young's modulus E of the base metal. As a result, a threaded joint which is suitable for joining of oil well pipes can be provided.

By controlling the ratio of the tightening torque at the completion of tightening to the shouldering torque at the time when the unthreaded shoulder portions come into contact to be in the range of 1.25-20 and more preferably 1.4-10, sufficient gastightness can be guaranteed and plastic deformation due to overtightening can be prevented regardless of the type of pipe joint or the conditions of use. As a result, it can be widely utilized in the tightening of special joints used with oil well pipes even under the present state of increasingly severe oil well environments.
