Plural Spring Engagement Patents (Class 29/216)
  • Patent number: 8371010
Abstract: Embodiments of a device and method for removing a valve spring from an engine are herein disclosed. In one embodiment, the device includes a base component with a compressor component removably connected to the base component via an elongate member threadedly engaged with the base component. A fastener may threadedly engage with the elongate member to reversibly keep the compressor component in place. The base component is configured to engage with opposing vertically-extending components on a cylinder head while the compressor component is configured to simultaneously engage with a valve spring. When rotational force is applied in a clockwork direction to the fastening component, the compressor component is forced in a downward direction thereby compressing the valve spring for subsequent removal thereof.

  • Patent number: 8234784
Abstract: Apparatus and method for extending the life of a booster valve in an automatic transmission. The booster valve commonly resides in the pump stator body and is modulated by reverse oil pressure and pressure control solenoid pressure signals. Pressure signals from the reverse oil pressure and the pressure control solenoid force a booster valve piston towards a pressure regulator valve piston also generally residing in the pump stator body. The booster valve piston slides inside a booster valve sleeve, and over time, the booster valve sleeve wears and the performance of the booster valve degrades or fails. The present invention replaces an original inner booster valve spring with a longer (or in some cases shorter) replacement booster valve spring to shift the operating range of the booster valve piston to an unworn portion of the booster valve sleeve to extend the life of the booster valve.

  • Patent number: 7975357
Abstract: Preferably, a motorcycle valve spring removal tool includes a motorcycle engine operatively mounted and secured to a frame of a motorcycle, and a valve spring compression tool secured to the motorcycle engine for use in removing a valve spring of the motorcycle engine while the cylinder head remains torqued to the cylinder, and the motorcycle engine remains mounted and secured within the motorcycle frame. In a preferred embodiment, the valve spring compression tool includes a base plate supporting a stud reception member that provides a threaded stud attachment aperture, in which a corresponding threaded stud is secured. Also included in the preferred embodiment is a compression plate interacting with the threaded stud and a force transfer component, preferably a threaded nut, also interacting with the stud to impart a compression force on the valve spring to achieve a predetermined level of compression of the valve spring.

  • Patent number: 7628835
Abstract: In a fastening portion for fastening an upper retaining portion and a lower retaining portion by means of a mounting screw, the upper retaining portion has a screw hole and a cylindrical guide formed around and above the screw hole. Further, a projection is formed on the inner wall of the cylindrical guide at an upper portion thereof. In a loosened condition of the mounting screw where it is disengaged from a screw hole, the head portion of the mounting screw is caught to be retained by the projection. The upper portion of the cylindrical guide is tapered so that it has an inner diameter smaller than the diameter of the head portion of the mounting screw. Accordingly, even when the upper retaining portion is turned upside down in the loosened condition of the mounting screw, the mounting screw does not fall down from the upper retaining portion.

  • Patent number: 6938315
Abstract: A tool for the removal and replacement of valve springs on the cylinder head of an internal combustion engine while the cylinder head is either mounted to the engine block within the vehicle or is positioned on a work bench apart from the engine. The tool comprises a bracket component that is mounted by a number of bolts to the cylinder head to be worked on. The bracket includes a number of upright threaded bolts each associated with an adjacent upright guide. A pressure plate is progressively positioned on each set of the upright bolts and upright guides. Beneath the pressure plate are positioned two (or more) valve guides that engage the outer upper perimeter of two or more valve springs. A nut is threaded on to the upright bolt in a manner that forces the pressure plate and the valve guides downward onto the valve springs. Compression of the springs releases the split rings or collars that hold the valve springs to the valve stems.

  • Patent number: 5371932
Abstract: A multiple valve spring compressor consists of a rectangular base of sufficient size to support the entire structure, an upper frame member being of a rectangular u-shape, is attached at each end to the base with an expandable device attached at it's center point. The expandable device which applies force to compress multiple valve springs is connected to a compression plate that is rectangular and has an elongated slot, the compression plate contacts the valve springs retainer during operation, upon compression of the valve springs, the stems and locks will pass thru the elongated slot for removal or installation. To align the valve springs with the compression plate, a head mounting table; which the cylinder head being worked on will rest upon, can be adjusted to various angles of tilt and pivot.

  • Patent number: 5339515
Abstract: Apparatus and method for removing, installing and/or testing valve-spring retainer assemblies of internal combustion engines and the like employ an existing spark plug opening to mount a tool which is designed to depress a valve spring and thereby disengage an associated valve-spring retainer assembly. Once it has been disengaged, at least a portion of the valve-spring retainer assembly can be removed from a cylinder head of the engine through the tool.

  • Patent number: 5327630
Abstract: The detached cylinder head is placed on a table or other flat surface which has a recessed area within which is retained a deformable elastic bladder. Air, water or some other fluid is introduced into the bladder causing it to expand so that it conforms to the chambers within the cylinder head. The pressure of the expanded bladder within the chamber forces the valve upward against the valve seat. Once the valve is pressed upward against the valve seat, the valve can be disassembled by depressing the spring and removing the fastener, so that the spring can be removed, or the spring can be put in place and the valve reconnected.

  • Patent number: 4769910
Abstract: A cutting tool for a cable jacket having a circular blade for location on one side of the cable and two rollers for engagement on the other. The blade or the rollers are inclined to cause the blade to engage the jacket at an inclined angle to the longitudinal direction of the cable. This inclined cable causes the tool to move helically around the cable when the tool is rotated thereby providing a helical cut into the jacket.

  • Patent number: 3977064
Abstract: The disclosure illustrates a valve spring compressor tool which may be used to remove heavy duty double valve springs from an engine with no more disassembly of the engine than removal of the rocker cover. The tool comprises a support bridge bolted to the rocker housing across the valves to be compressed. A plate having two cup-like recesses fits over the valve springs and a central sleeve passes through the plate to guide it for movement parallel to the normal direction of compression for the springs. A shaft is threaded into the cross arm and is aligned with the sleeve so that rotation causes it to exert a compressive force of great magnitude and retains the valve in the compressed position.
