  • Patent number: 6009614
Abstract: A tool and method for enabling substantially uniform and tight crimping of an intravascular stent onto a balloon catheter assembly. The crimping tool is constructed from a rigid cylindrical chassis sealed at both ends, having a hollow interior containing an elastic tube that partially occupies the interior. A piston abuts the elastic tube and forms a hermetically sealed chamber behind the piston and a closed end ofthe chassis. A port connected to an indeflator and positioned on the chassis provides an inlet into and out of the chamber. A stent that is loaded onto the balloon portion of the catheter is inserted through a central opening in another end of the chassis to position the stent catheter assembly within the axial space inside the elastic tube. The indeflator injects a fluid into the chamber thereby increasing its pressure which in turn displaces the piston into the elastic tube compressing the tube longitudinally.

  • Patent number: 5974646
Abstract: A tool to remove a retaining ring at least partially received in a groove of a cylinder has a handle lever constructed to engage the open end of the cylinder and a claw lever having a hooked end or claw constructed to be received at least partially underneath the retaining ring with the claw lever pivotally connected to the handle lever permitting relative movement between the two levers. The pivotal connection between the handle lever and claw lever permits them to be separated and joined together in a scissor-like fashion to facilitate engaging the claw with the retaining ring. When engaged with the retaining ring, the tool is pivoted about the cylinder to displace the claw and thereby displace the retaining ring inwardly and upwardly of the groove to remove it from the cylinder. The tool permits easy and non-destructive removal of the retaining ring and requires relatively low force and a relatively low level of skill to safely remove the retaining ring from the cylinder.

  • Patent number: 5956830
Abstract: An O-ring assembly tool for locating an O-ring within a groove formed in the end surface of a fitting includes a plunger having a cylindrical body with an end wall. A locator hub with a cylindrical body closely receives the cylindrical body of the plunger. A compression spring biases the plunger rearwardly within the locator hub, while a retaining pin allows axial forward movement of the plunger, but prevents relative rotation with respect to the locator hub. The locator hub includes an enlarged receiving end which axially and radially locates the assembly tool with respect to an end fitting. The cylindrical body of the plunger includes a flat annular engagement surface and when the plunger is pushed forwardly, the engagement surface pushes an O-ring forwardly into the groove on the end face of the fitting. The locator hub has a tapered inner surface at its forward end which radially-inwardly compresses the O-ring to fit cleanly within the groove.

  • Patent number: 5931851
Abstract: A stent crimping tool for firmly and uniformly crimping a stent onto a balloon catheter is constructed from a housing containing a silicone tube wherein the silicone tube is compressed by a thumb screw that is threaded into one end of the housing. The silicone tube has a passage containing a premounted uncrimped stent. The balloon catheter is inserted through the thumb screw and aligned with the stent inside the tube. Both ends of the silicone tubing are tapered and engage a tapered internal end inside the housing and a tapered recess inside the thumb screw. Advancing the thumb screw decreases the length of the silicone tubing and reshapes it so that the inside diameter of the passage decreases thereby crimping the stent onto the balloon. In an alternative embodiment, the opposite end of the housing is fitted with a second thumb screw. Further, the silicone tubing can be separated into two discrete segments by an annular washer located at a mid-point along the length of the silicone tube.

Abstract: A hand held plastic rod gripping tool 25 is especially adapted for forcefully pushing thin cylindrical plastic rods into a resident pivot joint site between two modular links of a conveyor belt. Plastic pivot rods are difficult to insert manually because they are thin, and easily flexed, making them hard to grasp frictionally in the fingers at a stiff short section for forceful axial insertion. Also some conveyor modules require the rods or the modules to be distorted for snapping in over a barrier ridge thus requiring more force for initial entry. The tool 25 has a cylindrical knurled 26 hand grip body, of a diameter that permits a firm grasp, through which extends an axial passageway, typically a slot 27, for entry of the rod. A manually movable gripper assembly 45 is generally laterally movable to frictionally contact a rod 10 held within the tool body. Within an interior channel 49 at an acute converging angle 50 toward a rod 10 the gripper 45 is spring biassed 46 to move toward the rod surface.

  • Patent number: 5758400
Abstract: A plurality of lengths of window or door framing material which have weatherstrip receiving channels are disposed on a support surface (10). An operator controls (14) a carriage (16) to move from a home position to the opposite end of the support surface. The operator takes free ends of strips (18) of weatherstripping which extend through a pinch roller assembly (22). A portion of each strip near the free end is inserted into the channel manually and the free end is clamped (50, 52) in the carriage. When all the strips are started, the operator changes the differential pressure across the piston of a rodless cylinder (34) returning the carriage to its home position pulling the weatherstripping through the channels. At the home position, the carriage releases the free ends of the weatherstripping and the operator cuts the weatherstripping adjacent the pinch roller assembly. The framing material with inserted weatherstripping is removed from the support surface and the process repeated.

  • Patent number: 5752311
Abstract: Method for expanding tubular members, such as U-shaped heat transfer tubes having ends thereof located in the confined space adjacent the curved sides of the bowl-shaped lower plenum of a typical nuclear steam generator. The apparatus includes an elongate mandrel having a flow channel therethrough in communication with a resilient tubular bladder surrounding the mandrel. The bladder is flexible about its longitudinal axis due to the ribbed construction of the wall thereof. The mandrel includes a plurality of segments, adjacent ones of the segments interconnected by a ball-and-socket joint therebetween, so that the segments swivel about respective ones of the ball-and-socket joints. Thus, the mandrel and the expandable bladder connected thereto are flexible rather than rigid in order to be easily inserted into the tube ends located adjacent the curved sides of the bowl-shaped plenum and in order to easily traverse the upper U-bend portion of the tube.
