  • Patent number: 10751790
Abstract: A linear actuator assembly comprises a housing, an output shaft, a nose piece and a negative pressure device. The output shaft defines an actuator assembly axis, and is movable along the actuator assembly axis between an extended position and a retracted position relative to the housing. The nose piece is slidably mounted to the output shaft and movable between an extended position and a retracted position relative to the output shaft. The nose piece and the output shaft co-operatively define a chamber for containing a quantity of fluid, the volume of the chamber being smaller when the nose piece is in the retracted position than when the nose piece is in the extended position. The negative pressure device is connectable to the chamber, and is selectively operable so as to reduce the pressure in the sealed volume, thereby urging the nose piece from the extended position towards the retracted position.

  • Patent number: 8925166
Abstract: A rivet setting device contains in a housing a receiving chamber in which a break-off rivet mandrel is situated after the setting operation. Arranged in this receiving chamber are two elongate magnets which leave free between them a space for the residual mandrel and which attract the residual mandrel from the holder for the rivet after it has been broken off and retain it. The holder for the residual mandrel can be moved with a transverse component in the device, with the residual mandrel being moved past a stripping element into a region outside the axis of the holder for the rivet. During the rearward movement of the residual mandrel holder, the residual mandrel is stripped off and remains in a collecting chamber.

The blind rivet installation tool includes a housing having an anvil seated on the rivet head. A collet is reciprocable within the tool housing and carries jaws for gripping the mandrel of the blind rivet. Retraction of the jaws by the collet displaces the jaws and the mandrel axially and causes the mandrel head to axially collapse and radially expand the hollow shank of the blind rivet into engagement with the bottom member so that the rivet attaches the top member and the bottom member. A first transducer measures the axial load imposed on the mandrel. A second transducer measures the axial displacement of the collet and the jaws and the mandrel.

Abstract: A pulling head includes a sleeve which threadably engages a sleeve adapter. A collet is threadably engaged with a drawbar adapter, and the collet and drawbar adapter are disposed and slidable in the sleeve. A set of jaws is disposed in the collet, and a jaw follower is disposed in the collet and contacts the jaws. A spring retainer is disposed in the collet, and engages two springs. Specifically, a first spring is disposed between the drawbar adapter and the spring retainer, and a second spring is disposed between the spring retainer and the jaw follower. The first spring has a higher rating than does the second spring. While the first spring is configured to accommodate inertia loading, the second spring is configured to urge the jaws closed yet be relatively easily overcome by the insertion of mandrels of different diameters.

Abstract: A rivet set quality monitoring system is disclosed. A supply pressure sensor monitors the supply pressure to the tool. The tool has a second sensor which monitors strains or loads associated with a rivet set event. A processor evaluates outputs from the pressure sensor to apply a scaling factor to the output of the second sensor which is a function of the output of the pressure sensor. This modified data is analyzed to determine if the rivet set is acceptable.
