Patent number: 5046226Abstract: The convertible bar-puller provides a convertible tool for automatic lathes. This tool has two main parts; a housing head and a shank. The housing head is attached to the shank using an adjustable connection means allowing the housing head to be positioned vertically with respect to the shank. The shank includes flat sides and radius corners to be received in either an internal tool housing or an external tool housing on the turret of the lathe. Positioning of the head on the shank in a first position fixed with the shank even with the upper end of the housing head adapts the tool for an external tool housing while fixing the head in the middle of the shank adapts the tool for an internal tool housing. Jaws for engaging the object to be machined extend forwardly from the head and have an adjustable jaw opening. The jaws each comprise a finger portion and an end portion, the end portion received in a circular groove on a jaw setting screw internal to the head.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 1989Date of Patent: September 10, 1991Inventor: Hue N. Patent number: 4856153Abstract: A spindle mechanism is capable of rotating for a rotative tool and is capable of being locked for mounting a nonrotative tool. First and second curvic couplings may be forced into engagement by a large hydraulic force which concurrently unloads a combined thrust and radial bearing at the outboard end of the support. This permits the spindle, when mounting a nonrotative tool, to be rigidly supported in a nonrotative condition. A smaller hydraulic force may be utilized to move the spindle axially inwardly which disengages the first and second curvic couplings and preloads the combined thrust and radial bearing providing a properly preloaded rotational mode of support when the spindle is mounting a rotative tool. The foregoing abstract is merely a resume of one general application, is not a complete discussion of all principles of operation or applications, and is not to be construed as a limitation on the scope of the claimed subject matter.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 1988Date of Patent: August 15, 1989Assignee: The Monarch Machine Tool CompanyInventor: Nagle V. Patent number: 4087890Abstract: A compound lathe in which a headstock is horizontally movable along a spindle axis to provide longitudinal feeding of a workpiece mounted for rotation with the spindle and a saddle carrying a turret is vertically movable to provide transverse feeding. The saddle is slidably disposed on vertical guideways which is formed on a column mounted on a bed at the back of the headstock rearwardly of cutting areas of the workpiece and which vertically extends in a plane parallel to the axis of the spindle. The turret supports tools for turning, milling, drilling and other operations. Numerically controlled servo motors preferably position the headstock and saddle. A secondary workpiece gripping means is provided to grip the end of the workpiece opposite the headstock and is releasably connected to the headstock for movement therewith. The gripping means allows accurate secondary machining of the cut-off portion of a parted workpiece by the tools on the turret.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 1975Date of Patent: May 9, 1978Assignee: Citizen Watch Company LimitedInventors: Shinichi Ishizuka, Kenji Sugimoto

Patent number: 4080853Abstract: A lathe on which the tool post is swiveled and indexed about a vertical axis and the workpiece is machined with a turning or rotary tool. The headstock is slidable upward and downward, and the work portions off the axis of the spindle can also be machined with the rotary tool. Once the workpiece is set in position, it can be subjected to a variety of machining operations on a number of surfaces.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 1976Date of Patent: March 28, 1978Assignee: Okuma Machinery Works, Ltd.Inventor: Yoshiaki Goto

Patent number: 4057893Abstract: A lathe head (work rotating device) and lathe tail stock (when required) are mounted on the table of a conventional numeric control milling machine. A tool holder and support are secured fixedly to a part of the stationary bed of the milling machine. The part to be machined is clamped in the lathe chuck and rotated by the lathe head. The mill table is programmed to move the work piece relative to the stationary tool in the required directions for machining.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 1976Date of Patent: November 15, 1977Assignee: Still-Walter Tool & Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Joe Delano Smith, David Daniel McCall, James Alexander Kyzer

Patent number: 4054975Abstract: Tools on a lathe having an automatically indexable and translatable turret are powered and controlled by automatically driving the turret to one or more predetermined positions to automatically couple or uncouple one or more detachable power coupling devices which connect power and/or control signals to turret-carried tools while the turret is translated to perform machining operations. Means are shown for effecting flexible mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and/or pneumatic power and control signals to turret-carried devices.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 1975Date of Patent: October 25, 1977Inventor: Carl William Lundstrom

Patent number: RE31304Abstract: A drilling machine comprises a ram movable up and down on a carriage slidably mounted on a horizontal crossrail. A toolhead is mounted on the bottom end of the ram for pivotal movement about a horizontal axis at right angles with the crossrail and is pivoted to a desired angular position by a first drive shaft within the ram via bevel gearing. Rotatably mounted in the toolhead for rotation about an axis lying in a vertical plane is a toolholder which rigidly supports a drill and which is driven from a second drive shaft within the ram via bevel gearings. Preferably, the machine further comprises a rack-and-pinion mechanism driven from the second drive shaft for securely but releasably locking a turning tool at the bottom end of the ram, so that the machine can be used also for turning operation as a workpiece is rotated on a turntable. This turntable is of course held stationary during drilling operation.Type: GrantFiled: January 3, 1980Date of Patent: July 12, 1983Assignee: Kabushiki Kaisha Komatsu SeisakushoInventor: Yoshihiro Tsukiji
