Patent number: 5412869Abstract: A motor-vehicle latent-heat storage unit is made by first positioning an elongated rectangular sheet-metal blank over a longitudinally extending slot formed in a die and then pressing an elongated anvil bar forming one of a pair of ultrasonic welding tools down against the blank over the slot to push the bar and the blank into the slot. This imparts to the blank a U-section and leaves longitudinally extending edge regions of the blank projecting out of the slot past the anvil bar. These edge regions are then folded transversely one after the other inward over the bar to form the blank into a tube with the edge regions overlapping each other. The other of the ultrasonic welding tools is subsequently pressed against the overlapped edge regions and therethrough against the anvil bar to ultrasonically weld together the overlapped edge regions along a full length of the tube. Finally the welded tube and the bar are moved longitudinally relative to each other to separate the tube from the bar.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 1993Date of Patent: May 9, 1995Assignee: Fritz Werner Prazisionsmaschinenbau GmbHInventors: Hartmut Boltz, Richard Christ, Karl-Josef Jakobi

Patent number: 5148588Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of a vehicle visor (2), of the type comprising a rigid core (1) enclosed in a fabric cover, according to which a fabric pocket (12) is produced, comprising on one of its sides (13) an opening (14) defined by lips, the core (1) is inserted into the pocket (12) through the opening (14) and the opening (14) is closed to form the cover. According to the invention, the lips (15, 16) of the opening (14) are first of all stiffened and the opening (14) is closed by inserting the stiffened lips (15, 16) into a groove (21) provided on the corresponding edge (6) of the core (1).Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 1991Date of Patent: September 22, 1992Assignee: Rockwell Automotive Body Systems-FranceInventor: Charles B. Patent number: 5029389Abstract: A method of purging and sealing a heat pipe includes brazing an end cap to the end of a heat pipe. The end cap has a hole therethrough, through which the heat pipe is charged. After charging, the heat pipe can be sealed simply by pinching the end cap to cold weld the hole shut, and at the same time any excess portion of the end cap can be severed off. Using this process the end cap takes up less of the condensor zone, providing for more efficient heat exchange. Additionally, the seal is more reliable.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 1987Date of Patent: July 9, 1991Assignee: Hughes Aircraft CompanyInventor: Herbert J. Tanzer

Patent number: 4675971Abstract: A method of manufacturing a desiccant assembly for a refrigeration circuit of the type used in automotive air conditioning systems. The method includes performing a container body by cutting a piece of seamless tube stock and friction forming one end of the tube to form an end wall. One or more apertures are formed within the container body to accommodate refrigerant circuit fittings. A refrigerant tube is installed in the container body along with associated components such as the desiccant material, additional fittings etc. Thereafter, the container body is again friction formed to enclose the opposite end wall of the container. The method according to this invention avoids the disadvantages associated with a multi-piece desiccant container which is subject to refrigerant leakage.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 1985Date of Patent: June 30, 1987Assignee: Michigan Special Products, Inc.Inventor: Gregory J. Patent number: 4628579Abstract: A liquid shock absorber device including a plastic cylinder having first and second ends, a piston rod having a first end within the cylinder and a second end externally of the cylinder, a plastic seal formed integrally with the cylinder at the first end and defining an opening for receiving the piston rod in sealing relationship, a closure for closing the second end of the cylinder, and fluid in the cylinder. The closure on the second end may have a piston associated therewith for preloading the fluid.Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 1981Date of Patent: December 16, 1986Assignee: Tayco Developments, Inc.Inventor: Paul H. Patent number: 4543112Abstract: A sorbent type filter assembly (10) which is made by sequentially placing a first resilient perforated plate (40), a first retention filter (36), a sorbent bed (34), a second retention filter (38), a second resilient perforated plate (42), and a cover (14) within the cylindrical portion (16) of a canister shell (12). The cover (14) is forced downwardly to compress the sorbent bed (34) and to resiliently spring bias or stress the first resilient perforated plate (40). While the parts are held together under compression, an annular edge portion of the cylindrical shell is rolled into a circumferentially extending groove on the canister cover to hermetically and mechanically hold the parts together in their assembled and compressed relationship.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1984Date of Patent: September 24, 1985Assignee: Figgie International Inc.Inventors: Mark W. Patent number: 4493201Abstract: A strong, seamless one-piece metal bottle of substantially uniform wall thickness for containing and dispensing gas under pressure is produced from a flat metal piece by a series of deep-drawing operations to provide an elongated cylindrical shell having an open end mouth and a slight flange thereabout. A dimple is formed in its bottom end wall. The flange and an adjacent cylindrical open end mouth portion of the shell is then severed from the main body, and the wall thickness of the new open end mouth portion is tapered from the cylindrical side wall of the shell towards its mouth edge. Thereafter, the tapered open mouth end portion is turned or swaged inwardly into a somewhat blunt, rounded-in nose portion of a substantially uniform thickness that substantially corresponds in the thickness to the side and bottom walls of the formed metal bottle and that has an open end of reduced size suitable for mounting a nipple, ferrule or valve fitting therein.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 1983Date of Patent: January 15, 1985Assignee: Alco Industries, Inc.Inventor: Donald J.
