Publication number: 20150020360Abstract: A method of removing a bushing secured within a blind hole defined in a machine component is disclosed. The method includes inserting a cylindrical portion of a tool at least partly in an opening adjacent to the blind hole. The method includes positioning an elongate member of the tool that extends from the cylindrical portion co-axially with the blind hole. The elongate member includes four corner portions disposed at an end distal to the cylindrical portion and defines an effective diameter of the elongate member less than a diameter of the blind hole. The method includes driving the block member towards the machine component to insert the elongate member into the blind hole, separating the bushing into at least four parts via the corner portions, removing the elongate member from the blind hole, and removing the parts from the blind hole.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 9, 2014Publication date: January 22, 2015Applicant: Caterpillar Inc.Inventor: James C. Patent number: 8931156Abstract: A puller for removing a pulley off of the shaft is disclosed. The puller may have proximal and distal plates that are disposable around the pulley so that the pulley is disposed entirely between the proximal and distal plates. These plates are held together by frame members. A push rod is threadably engaged to a proximal plate and operative to be further inserted into the proximal plate so that a distal end of the push rod may push against the shaft and transfer a removing force through the puller to the backside of the pulley for removing the pulley off of the shaft.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 2014Date of Patent: January 13, 2015Inventors: Andrew Jason Zimmer, Jason Edelman

Patent number: 8925170Abstract: A system and method for removing an electronic component from a substrate is described. In one embodiment, a method in accordance with the invention includes initially preheating a substrate, wherein an electronic component (such as a microchip or discrete electronic component) is attached to the substrate by one or more solder connections. A thermally conductive picker head is applied to the electronic component to quench the electronic component and generate a temperature gradient across the solder connections. Tension is applied to the electronic component using the picker head. The substrate is then heated until a melting point is reached at the interface between the substrate and the solder connections. When the melting point is reached, the tension applied by the picker head removes the electronic component from the substrate. Most if not all of the solder associated with the solder connections is removed with the electronic component.Type: GrantFiled: April 22, 2011Date of Patent: January 6, 2015Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Yvan Bessette, Eric Bouchard, Nicolas Boyer, Camille Dube, Eric Dube, Sarah Turgeon
