Abstract: The corrosion resistance of formed and shaped sheet magnesium alloy articles may be improved by applying to the article a substantially crack- and pore-free ductile metal layer on at least selected surfaces and cut or sheared edges. An exemplary ductile metal may be aluminum or its alloys. Two methods of applying such a ductile metal layer are described. One method is suitable for extended areas of the magnesium alloy surface, and is applied prior to stamping the article while a second method, suitable for cut or sheared edges, is intended for application after the article is fully formed. The incorporation of both embodiments into conventional sheet metal stamping processes to form the corrosion resistant formed magnesium article is described.

  • Patent number: 7458158
Abstract: This invention introduces a new category of engineered surfaces and corresponding production processes for better wear resistance and lower friction loss. The structured surfaces can be applied on many automobile components with frictional surfaces. The composite structure settles the usual conflicts between surface functions and stresses. Two sets of multiple-step processes are introduced to achieve high production efficiency and low cost. Unlike traditional surface technologies that generate single and uniform layers on the whole part surface, the new technology processes the part surface selectively for more effective surfaces with versatile functions.

Abstract: A method of producing a workpiece forming at least one bearing eye is described, which is divided in the region of the bearing eye along an intended fracture point through a fracture separation, the bearing eye being coated with an anti-friction coating after assembly of the parts. In order to achieve a high load capacity, it is suggested that the bearing eye be processed for a precise fit after assembly of the parts obtained through the fracture separation of the workpiece, before the anti-friction coating is applied to the processed bearing eye surface in a thickness corresponding to the final dimensions.

Abstract: A cylindrical roller bearing or needle roller bearing for use with a rolling raceway surface is subjected to a carbonitriding treatment to produce a layer containing 30 to 80% retained austenite in the vicinity of its surface that contacts a carburized layer of a rolling raceway surface of a roller bearing. The amount of retained austenite of the surface layer of the roller bearing is increased by about 30%. The surface layer is then heat treated to apply a residual compression stress. The surface then receives surface finishing to produce micro concavo-convex portions in a random direction.

  • Patent number: 6886986
Abstract: A bearing having bearing elements made of Type 60 Nitinol made by an investment casting process for producing near net shape parts of Nitinol includes making a ceramic mold having a series of spherical cavities, pouring molten Nitinol into the mold cavities, cooling the mold and the Nitinol in the cavities to produce solidified Nitinol balls, and breaking the mold away from the Nitinol balls. Nitinol rods for roller bearings can be made by conventional casting directly from the crucible in a draw-down oven. The bars are hot machined or hot rotary swaged and then centerless ground and laser cut to length, or are first cut to length and then centerless ground individually for crowned roller elements. The balls are broken or cut from the risers, leaving the gates attached, and are consolidated by healing under pressure in a hot isostatic press, then ground to the desired size. The balls or rollers are polished, then treated to create an integral ceramic finish.

  • Patent number: 6848832
Abstract: In a rolling bearing put under a working circumstance in which water tends to intrude into lubricants, it has been known such a phenomenon that hydrogen ions formed by decomposition of the lubricants are adsorbed to raceway surfaces and accumulated as hydrogen atoms in highly strained sites (in the vicinity of the position for maximum shearing stress), to cause stress corrosion cracking type peeling. The present invention provides a rolling bearing in which an oxide layer of an iron/chromium oxide series is formed at a thickness of from 1 to 1000 nm to at least one of raceway surfaces of bearing rings or rolling contact surfaces of rolling elements and a manufacturing method thereof.
