  • Patent number: 8882162
Abstract: A locking system enabling selective handle turning direction to operate an unlocking mechanism is provided. The system comprises a handle, a gear rack driven linearly by rotation of the handle, and a plate removably coupled to the gear rack by a coupling means, wherein the plate moves in a first linear direction in response to handle rotation. When the coupling means is in a first position to couple the plate to the gear rack, a clockwise rotation of the handle displaces the plate in the first linear direction. When the coupling means is in a second position to couple the plate to the gear rack, a counter-clockwise rotation of the handle displaces the plate in the first linear direction. Movement of the plate in the first direction operates the unlocking mechanism.

Abstract: A door handle assembly comprises an interior handle connected to the interior face of a door, a latch mechanism which is operable between latched and unlatched positions to secure the door, an operator mounted to the door and rotatable with respect to the handle, and a rack and pinion assembly to transfer the rotary motion of the operator to the latch mechanism. The operator includes a tumbler assembly. The rack and pinion assembly may include a rack and two pinions one located at each end of the rack. However, other arrangements are possible including gear trains comprising two or three gears driven by the rack. The rack and pinion assembly may be mounted between a pair of planar members which form part of a housing which is proportioned to fit between the latch mechanism and an interior surface of a stile of a door. The rack and pinion assembly permits the latch mechanism and the operator, which have usually been coaxial, to be vertically offset from each other.

Abstract: This invention is directed to a door latch having an auxiliary bolt which activates the latch bolt, and the use of a latch to confine small children in the home. The auxiliary bolt has a hinged beveled end which pivots when the door is opened but is fixed when the door is closed to activate the latch. The latch is placed five feet above the floor to prevent a small child from opening the door. The latch has a guard plate below the door handle to prevent a small child from opening the latch with a stick. The latch can be mounted on any side of any door.

  • Patent number: 5826922
Abstract: A rotary latch assembly which allows for simple, inexpensive and reliable attachment of a computer bezel to a computer housing. Latches disposed on each side of the bezel engage openings in the computer housing so as to secure the bezel to the computer housing. The latches are attached to rails which includes gears. A knob which includes rotary gears extends through an opening in the bezel. The rotary gears engage the gears of both of the rails such that the latches may be moved within a limited range by rotating the knob. Thus, the bezel may be removed by rotating the knob such that the latches move inward, thereby disengaging the latches from the openings in the computer housing.

A rack is located between the lower operator assembly and the upper deadbolt for engaging a pinion which will release the deadbolt. This pinion can be vertically located at a position to receive the drive spindle of the deadbolt. A second pinion which is secured to the turn lever for the deadbolt is secured to the faceplate. These pinions cooperate with adjacent width portions of the rack enabling the faceplate to operate with different center distances.

Abstract: A locking device for manhole inner covers is disclosed. The locking device is operated only by an authorized key thus almost completely protecting the underground arrangements such as pipes, drains or wires from unauthorized persons, who intend to reach the arrangements with the object of damaging or breaking the arrangements. The locking device is cased by a longitudinal channel type housing. Two reciprocating units are arranged in the housing so that the arrangement of the units inside the housing is point-symmetric about the center of the housing. Each unit has a plurality of regularly-spaced gear holes, which selectively engage with the asterisk part of a key. A locking bolt is coupled to each reciprocating unit and fully projects or retracts from or into the housing. A keyhole panel is movably seated on a central member so that the keyhole panel can move in a vertical direction. The keyhole panel has an asterisk keyhole.

Abstract: A door latch assembly 10 includes a rack 102 which is moved upon depression of a thumbpiece 12. Movement of the rack 102 results in rotation of an enmeshed pinion 136 and an assembled spindle 152. As the spindle 152 rotates, a latch 26 is moved from a latched position to an unlatched position to thereby permit opening of a door 20 on which the door latch assembly is mounted. When it is desired to lock the door 20, a key-operated lock cylinder 16 is operated to place into motion facilities for moving the rack 102 into a disabled poisition whereafter depression of the thumbpiece 12 will not result in movement of the rack.As the rack 102 is moved to the disabled position, teeth 104 of the rack remain enmeshed with teeth 138 of pinion 136. When the rack 102 is again moved to the enabled positon, the teeth 104 and 138 remain enmeshed and thereby avoid any deleterious reactions had they been separated upon disablement of the rack 102 and re-enmeshed upon enablement thereof.

Abstract: A locking device for doors and the like, having a bolt installed in the door frame and movable into the open position by a solenoid and into the shut position by a spring. Locking devices of this kind have not found general use, since there is no room in the frame for a device as required by the regulations wherewith the lock may be opened mechanically from the inside. This problem has been solved in such a manner that the socket of the door has a counterbolt forced by a spring against the bolt proper, whereby the spring force of the spring of the counterbolt is smaller than the spring force of the spring of the bolt.

  • Patent number: 4725085
Abstract: A novel rack-pinion forms an outside operator of either a single latchbolt or a double latchbolt with the pinion rotating a latch operator of at least a single latchbolt to move the bolt between extended and retracted positions. The rack is shiftable between pinion engaging and nonengaging positions as determined by an inside operator control button, this being the sole means of shifting in the simplist, single latchbolt form. When it is a single latchbolt form, a lock may be added to the outside operator for also shifting the rack-pinion construction. In more complex, double latchbolt form, the second bolt, preferably a deadbolt, may have an outside operator formed by a lock or an inside operator formed by a turnpiece of both. With the outside lock of the second bolt construction, a yoke may connect that to the rack-pinion construction of the first latchbolt for shifting the rack by the second latchbolt outside lock.
