Patent number: 4834433Abstract: The support member underlying the door outer panel has coaxially aligned apertures formed in spaced apart walls thereof. First and second telescopically engaged axle members molded of plastic have integral axle spindles projecting from the ends thereof. A spring acts between the axle members to permit axial contraction of the axle members relative one another so that the axle spindles may be inserted between the spaced apart aperture panel walls. The spring then functions to extend the axle members axially apart to position the axle spindles within the panel apertures and thereby rotatably mount the axle members on the panel.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 1987Date of Patent: May 30, 1989Assignee: Saturn CorporationInventor: John F. Patent number: 4639026Abstract: The arrangement comprises a standard, door knob-operated, latch mechanism in which the cylindrical shank of the door knob is slidably engaged with the rotatable spindle of the mechanism, and the spindle has a spring-biased catch projecting therethrough which passes into a slot formed in the cylindrical shank of the knob. In this way, the knob is secured on the shank. The improvement comprises forming a ramp in a cut-out on the terminal or outermost end of of the cylindrical shank, and forming a complimentary bevel on a corner of the projecting catch. Accordingly, when the knob is slidably forced onto its spindle, during manufacturing assembly, the ramp formed in the cut-out engages the bevel and, consequently, depresses the catch to allow the cylindrical shank to slide thereupon and thereover, and to allow the catch latchingly to engage the slot.Type: GrantFiled: October 11, 1985Date of Patent: January 27, 1987Assignee: Schlage Lock CompanyInventor: Jon M. Patent number: 4415292Abstract: One of two frame elements to be removably connected is telescoped over and removably latchably secured to the intervening connector structure. The removable latching means takes the form of a cantilever mounted spring component located internally of the connector structure hollow body component, the spring resilient forward portion including a locking projection upwardly urged through an apertured wall of the body component and into a registering-aperture of the telescoped frame element. The cantilever spring is of novel structural and internally mounted relationship with the hollow body component to prevent longitudinal slidable movement of the spring and to ensure that it will reliably, though yieldably, upwardly urge the locking projection through the apertured wall and into the registering-aperture of the frame element to be removably latchably secured.Type: GrantFiled: October 11, 1979Date of Patent: November 15, 1983Inventor: Paul Alperson

Door handles or other lock operators are disposed on opposite ends of both spindles and are interconnected variously to operate a lock bolt and a latch bolt. The lock and latch bolts are also disposed in the bores and are joined to the chassis. One of the handles is joined to one of the spindles by a clutch including an axially movable member operated by an electromagnet within the bores, the electromagnet being connected to the clutch member by an actuator movable in a path having an axial component.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 1977Date of Patent: February 14, 1978Assignee: Schlage Lock CompanyInventor: Ernest L. Patent number: 4052868Abstract: A door knob is machined from solid stock to provide a tubular neck, an intermediate portion which is internally recessed to reduce its wall thickness, and a solid-section end portion having a large axial end opening which provides tool access for recessing the mid-portion and clears the pin tumbler lobe of a key-removable core mounted in the knob sleeve with its key plug concentric with the knob. The end opening has an axially-outward facing shoulder and an adjacent radially-inward opening groove. A knob locating, bevelled-edge ring lies against the shoulder with its edge partially closing the mouth of the groove. An end face member having a peripheral bevelled skirt is pressed into the end opening and against the edge of the ring so as to deform the skirt outward into the groove and thereby secure both the end face member and the ring in the knob. The end face member may have an opening for a core mounted in the knob sleeve, or for other usual knob accessories, or may completely close the end of the knob.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 1976Date of Patent: October 11, 1977Assignee: Best Lock CorporationInventors: Walter E. Patent number: 3955387Abstract: A heavy duty cylindrical lock set adaptable for various "functions" and having improved features, especially to permit a key-removable lock core to be reversible in its knob mounting to suit right- and left-hand doors. A knob sleeve of large diameter is slotted and shaped at its knob receiving end to form two diametrically-opposed channel sections of high strength and rigidity. The inward edges of the four channel side legs form a mounting seat to receive the key-plug-containing body of the core on the axis of the knob, while the two spaces between the channel sections permit the pin-tumbler lobe or section of the core to extend radially in either of two orientations about the axis of the knob. Two of the channel side edges are notched to engage a key-controlled retaining lug of the core. The knob has a large bore in its outer end and is supported from the knob sleeve by a drive ring which accomodates the core in both orientations. A face plate is held in the knob bore by the core and closes the knob bore.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 1974Date of Patent: May 11, 1976Assignee: Best Lock CorporationInventors: Walter E. Best, R.
