  • Patent number: 5226302
Abstract: A self-adjusting lock has a keeper stud with a base that is mounted in a recess in a keeper assembly so that it can slide in four directions. As the bevelled keeper stud is pressed into an opening in a latch assembly, the stud self-adjusts in the necessary direction to achieve alignment. A spring pressing the base against a surface causes the base, and so the keeper stud, to be frictionally held in its new position. The keeper stud has a series of spaced ratchet teeth, axially separated from one another, any of which can interengage with the latch mechanism. Thus, the lock is adjusted in this direction each time the lock is closed, resulting in a lock self-adjustable in six directions.

  • Patent number: 5190325
Abstract: A magnetic catch comprises a magnetic assembly and a catch plate. The magnetic assembly includes a magnet flanked by two pole shoes. The magnet and pole shoes are biassed against a casing portion by an abutment feature provided integrally on a support member which is retained by resilient clips extending from the casing. The localized nature of the abutment feature provides a gap between the pole plates and the support member. This gap allows the pole members to move relative to the magnet so that they can align themselves with the catch plate to provide optimal physical contact therewith. Nevertheless, the biasing arrangement holds the magnet in a fixed position which helps to prevent the magnet and pole shoes from rattling.

  • Patent number: 5184853
Abstract: A door lock mechanism that allows either tool operable locking or padlocking of a handle and escutcheon assembly. The lock includes a tool operable insert inset in the lock base and adapted to receive any one of number of standard tools. Such tools are used in industry to restrict access to specific groups of craft persons. For applications desiring padlock capability, the tool operable access can be disabled. A pawl coupled to the tool operable insert, is operable between first and second positions. When the pawl is biassed toward the first position, corresponding to the locked state, it will engage the latch, thereby effecting locking, whenever the latch is brought to the latched position, by turning the handle to a vertical position, and the use of the tool operable insert is enabled for disengaging the pawl from the latch and the pawl. When the pawl is biassed toward the second position the pawl is prevented from engaging the latch, thus disabling the tool operable lock to provide for padlocking.

  • Patent number: 4911489
Abstract: A T-handle latch in which a housing is designed for reception in an opening of an item to be latched. A shank of a handle is rotationally disposed in the housing, and an actuating member of the latch is fixed on the end of the shank. The shank may be received in a shank-receiving opening of the actuating member, the opening being elongate so that the actuating member may be fixed in any of a plurality of discrete transverse positions with respect to the shank. Keying elements on the shank and in the shank-receiving opening define the discrete positions and are useful in achieving initial adjustment of the latch, in preventing the latch from slipping out of adjustment during use, and in helping to prevent relative rotation of the shank and the actuating member. Return springs bias the handle toward a neutral, home position. The return springs may be housed completely within the body of the latch, thereby protecting them from accidential damage, dislodging or loss during use, installation or shipping.
