Abstract: Improved variable-pitch pick and place devices may include one or more improvements such as a mechanical linkage such as pantograph linkage, the linkage itself linked to a plurality of device-gripping mechanisms arranged in a row so as to keep uniform, though variable, spacing between the device-gripping mechanisms, with the number of such mechanisms being increased relative to the number of parts in the linkage for reduced tolerance stack-up and improved positioning accuracy. The horizontal position of the linkage may be fixed at a position not at an end thereof, and desirably within the middle third or at the middle thereof. The linkage may be controlled at three points. These point may include a vertically flexible but horizontally fixed link to a supporting structure at the middle of the pantograph, a link at one end of the pantograph to one side of an endless loop of timing belt, and a link at the other end of the pantograph to the other side of the endless loop of timing belt.

  • Patent number: 6464069
Abstract: A pick and place quadruple head construction for transferring as many as four small workpieces such as computer chips and the like simultaneously from a first matrix to a second matrix. The four individual head units are arranged to form a rectangular area which may be contracted or enlarged upon moving three of the units relative to each other along two mutually perpendicular axes. Each unit includes a reciprocable spindle capable of movement along a third axis, and rotatable about the third axis in repeatable cyclic manner. The spindles include vacuum means for picking up and releasing transferred workpieces. Also disclosed is a wear compensating structure for the spindle. In several of the disclosed embodiments, the head units are arranged such that the reciprocating spindles are located in a common vertical plane so that the articles deposited on the place matrix permit an in-line separation.

  • Patent number: 6454514
Abstract: A workpiece support and an apparatus including such a workpiece support are set forth. The workpiece support includes a set of grooved members for supporting a series of workpieces. The workpieces may be similarly shaped, e.g. circular or rectangular, and similarly sized, each having a front face and a back face. An outer perimeter of each workpiece may be beveled at both faces, beveled at one face, unbeveled, convex, or concave. Each grooved member has a series of similar grooves. Being adapted to receive such a workpiece, each groove has a bearing wall and a wedging wall shaped and oriented so that a line normal to the wedging wall intersects but is not normal to the bearing wall. For many applications, two grooved members are employed, which are parallel to one another, spaced from one another, and oriented so that the grooves of the grooved members are generally aligned.

Abstract: A lifting device that simultaneously lifts a plurality of retaining wall blocks initially oriented in a triangular configuration on a pallet and allows them to be easily re-aligned in a linear configuration on a retaining wall. The lifting device comprises two pivoting lateral extending side arms with clamping units attached to their distal ends. Attached to the main planar frame is a central clamping unit. Each clamping unit includes an insert member that inserts into a large, vertically aligned hole formed in the block. When the clamping units are inserted into the hole and activated, three triangular aligned sets of blocks on a pallet may be lifted. The side arms are designed to pivot rearward so that the front surfaces of the blocks are longitudinally aligned and the blocks are positioned in a side-by-side manner. Once properly re-aligned, the lifting device is lowered so that the three blocks are simultaneously placed over the top row of the retaining wall.

  • Patent number: 6357994
Abstract: This invention relates to a multi-purpose end effector for a robotic arm that moves a workpiece through an automated, multi-station, manufacturing operation. The end effector is particularly useful in a gear manufacturing operation in which a gear piece is annealed, ground and tested to ensure it meets desired specifications. The relatively lightweight and compact end effector securely grips the workpiece during multi-directional movements, and provides a degree of softness when loading the normally non-rotating workpiece onto a continuously rotating chuck or tool. The end effector is secured to the robotic arm by a cross-member equipped with three different gripping implements. A central gripping device extends from the middle of the cross-member, a loading arm extends from one end of the cross-member, and an unloading arm extends from the other end. Each gripping implement includes pneumatically controlled gripping fingers for holding the gear pieces.

  • Patent number: 6309001
Abstract: An article piercing end effector for an industrial robot. The end effector includes a mounting bracket designed to be coupled to the arm of a robot. Positioned on the bracket is an actuator that is coupled to and controls the movement of a first plate. The first plate is supported by two guide rods coupled to the actuator. The first plate includes a plurality of pairs of opposed forks removably mounted to its underside of the first plate. Positioned below the first plate is a second plate with a plurality of holes generally aligned with the tips of each of the pair of opposed forks. The second plate is fixedly attached to the mounting bracket by standoff rods. When the first plate is moved by the actuator toward the second plate, the forks extending from the first plate travel through the holes in the second plate, which holes are chamfered for easy operation. The tips of the forks thus move towards each other to pierce items of interest, such as baked goods positioned below the second plate.
