Abstract: A slide-out support system (28) for a flat floor slide-out room (12) of a recreational vehicle (10) has ways (40) on both sides of telescoping inner rails (34) which present a pair of downwardly facing ramped surfaces (110) on which rollers (70) roll to support the room (12). Ramped surfaces (56) are provided on opposite sides of stationary outer rails (30) on which rollers (50, 52) mounted to the inner end of the inner rails (34) roll to also help support the room. The ramps (110, 56) are in registration with one another so that during extension and retraction the rails (34) are lowered and raised while maintaining them substantially horizontal. A follower (72) has a roller (76) which rolls on the upper surface (36) of the inner rail (34) and a roller (78) which rolls on the lower surface (80) of the slide-out floor (64) to lower or raise the floor (64) as the rail (34) is lowered or raised while maintaining the floor (64) in a substantially constant horizontal orientation.

Abstract: A retractable awning for a recreational vehicle is provided wherein the awning is stored behind a pivoting door that closes flush with the side of the recreational vehicle when the awning is not deployed over a slide-out unit. The pivoting door is adjacent the awning and the pivoting door closes flush with the side of the recreational vehicle with the awning enclosed in its side mounted compartment. With the retractable awning completely behind the plane defining the side of the recreational vehicle and protected by a locking door, the awning does not add any additional unwanted width to the recreational vehicle and is protected from unfurling during transport. An automatic locking mechanism is provided for ensuing that the door remains closed during transportation. Further, a debris clearing mechanism is preferably installed adjacent the spool which collects the retractable awning as it retracts, thereby cleaning the awning of debris prior to its withdrawal into the compartment.

Abstract: An operating mechanism for use in a vehicle having a bedroom slide out, the bedroom slide out having a platform which is movable laterally relative to a vehicle having a stationary floor. The operating mechanism laterally moves the movable room section relative to the stationary room section between a retracted position and an extended position, and has a height adjustable frame. The frame includes overlapping side members which are slidably moveable relative to each other and fastenable at two or more discrete heights.

Abstract: A low profile, expandable, mobile rigid structure with unique a unique assembly and support system, that can easily be transported by an average sized vehicle. The structure features a central structure with a central roof section, a pair of endwall assemblies, and a central floor mounted to a base. The endwalls are two pieced having a bottom endwall panel and a top endwall panel. From the side of the central structure one or more side sections are retractable and expandable to increase the size of the floor space inside. The two pieced endwalls allow for compaction of the structure for travel by translating the lower portion of the endwall from supporting the upper portion. A two pieced door allows entry into the structure when it is expanded.

Abstract: A drive mechanism for transportable living quarters having a main living area and a slide-out room includes a plurality of actuators connected between the main living area and the slide-out room to move the room between a retracted position retracted within the main living area and an extended position extended from the main living area, a plurality of position sensors associated with the plurality of actuators, each position sensor outputting a position signal representing a position of its associated actuator, a plurality of valves connected to the plurality of actuators, each valve being adjustable to either enable or inhibit movement of its corresponding actuator, and a controller for adjusting the valves in response to the position signals to synchronize movement of the actuators.

Abstract: The travel trailer includes a chassis having wheels and a trailer hitch for towing the travel trailer. The travel trailer further includes a trailer body attached to the chassis defined by sidewalls, a front end wall, a rear end wall, a roof, and a floor. The sidewalls, end walls, roof, and floor form an internal space of the trailer body. A slide-out area is slidably extendable outward from the trailer body. The slide-out area is extendable from a retracted position received within the trailer body to an extended position extended outward from the trailer body. The slide-out area includes a peaked roof, sidewalls, a bottom wall, and a front end wall. The front end wall includes a flange extending around the perimeter thereof. A sealing gasket is attached to the flange to face the trailer body for sealing against the trailer body in the retracted position of the slide-out area.

Abstract: A slide-out room for recreational vehicles, sleeper cabs of trucks, and similar mobile living quarters is supported for movement through an aperture in the side wall of the mobile living quarters by a set of four linkages, two of which are mounted between each side of the slide-out room in the corresponding side of the aperture of the side wall of the unit. When the slide-out room is fully retracted within the mobile living quarters, one of the linkages on each side of the slide-out room is fully extended and the other is fully collapsed. As the slide-out room is moved toward the fully-extended position, the other linkage gradually expands and the one linkage collapses, so in the fully extended, as well as the fully retracted position, the slide-out room is supported and aligned for movement through the aperture in the vehicle slide-out room, and the slide-out room is continuously supported as it travels between the extended and retracted positions.

Abstract: A slide out room is a extended from a mobile living quarters to provide auxiliary space and is retracted into the mobile living quarters when the unit is to be moved by a pair of independent actuators. A control is provided which responds to signals generated by position sensors for each actuator to interpret a corresponding actuator whenever the position of one of the actuators exceeds the position of the other actuator by more then a predetermined offset. The actuators are stopped whenever they attain a corresponding “room in” or a “room out” stop limit. The stop limits are set by independently advancing the actuators after they have attained default limit to set the out and in stop limits independently between the actuators.

Abstract: An electronic slide-out room synchronization system is provided to synchronize multiple actuators of a slide-out room so that the slide-out room has accurate alignment during extension or retraction while further providing a proper seal at full extension or retraction. The system comprises two linear actuators such as lead screw mechanisms or hydraulic cylinders in communication with a controller activated by an activation or room switch located inside a recreational vehicle. The linear actuators, when signaled via the controller, move the slide-out room between a retracted position and an extended position. If the controller determines, by receiving signals from a sensor, that one of the linear actuators is moving faster or is extended or retracted further than the other linear actuator, the controller synchronizes the actuators so that they extend and retract in unison.

Abstract: The present invention provides a slide-out support rail, which is particularly adapted for use as a single set of rails, which may be power operated or manually operated. The slide-out support rail system has an inner telescoping rail with a gear rack mounted on top of the upper wall of the inner rail. The teeth of the gear rack face upwardly and mesh with a pinion gear which is journaled relative to the outer rail above the gear rack.

The fixed room includes a floor section, sidewall sections, and a roof section, and the slide-out room includes a floor section, sidewall sections, and a roof section. A slide-out extension mechanism extends and retracts the slide-out room in a cantilevered manner. In a fully retracted position, the roof section and two of the sidewall sections of the slide-out room are typically concealed from exterior view, and a third sidewall section of the slide-out room forms a portion of the sidewall section of the fixed room. Furthermore, the floor section of the slide-out room is flush with the floor section of the fixed room, and proximal ends of the sidewall sections of the slide-out room are flush with an inner surface of one of the sidewall sections of the fixed room when the slide-out room is fully extended.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a synchronized rack and pinion system for extendable rooms for recreational vehicles. In particular, the invention provides a drive system for use in extending and retracting an extendable room on a vehicle frame. The drive system includes at least one pair of parallel rack and pinion systems operatively connected between the vehicle frame and the extendable room, with each pair of parallel rack and pinion systems synchronized through respective drive shafts. The system is operable between a closed position where the extendable room is retracted with respect to the vehicle frame and an open position where the extendable room is extended with respect to the vehicle frame.

Abstract: Mobile living quarter incorporates a slide out room which is moveable between an extended position providing auxiliary living quarters when the unit is parked and a retracted position retracted into the main living area when the unit moved. A latching mechanism automatically latches the slide out room to the main living quarters as the slide out room is moved into the fully retracted position, and releases the latch to permit outward movement of the room when the unit is parked and the slide out room is extended.

Abstract: A recreational vehicle including a “slide-out” cabin portion is equipped with a locking mechanism which comprises a lock door pivotally rotatable to interfere with the wall opening periphery through which the slide-out cabin portion transitions. The slide-out further has an extensible portion front end positioned external to the wall opening such that the dimensions of the extensible portion front end exceed the dimensions of the wall opening. The extensible portion front end contacts the main cabin wall opening periphery along the entire perimeter of the wall opening thus completely sealing the wall opening when the slide-out is in a fully retracted position. Further, the slide-out locks are positioned sufficiently close to the extensible portion front end that when the slide-out is in a retracted position and the slide-out locks are in the locked position, the main cabin wall periphery is pinched between the slide-out locks and the extensible portion front end.

Abstract: A flush floor device for use on recreational vehicles having slide out rooms includes a floor of the slide out room that according to one embodiment of the invention pivots relative to the slide out room's outer wall. When the slide out room is extended, the inner edge of the auxiliary floor moves into a flush position with the main floor, and the outer edge of the auxiliary floor deflects downwardly along with the supporting extensible members. An edge unit attached to the main floor includes a nylon camming member which cams against the auxiliary floor in order to smoothly raise or lower the auxiliary floor inner edge as the slide out room is retracted or extended. According to another embodiment of the invention, a system of levers maintains the auxiliary floor generally coplanar with the main floor. According to still another embodiment of the invention, the entire slide out room is raised and lowered while maintaining the floor of the slide out room substantially horizontal.

Abstract: A plumbing assembly is provided which is formed from a plurality of rigid pipe sections, connected between a movable sink and a relatively fixed fluid outlet. These pipe sections are joined together by swivel fittings that permit the pipe sections to rotate with respect to each other. In this manner, different distances between the sink and the fluid outlet are accommodated by a folding and unfolding motion of the plumbing assembly in a minimum of space behind the wall of an expandable portion of the room. Fluid supply lines for providing hot and cold water to the sink faucet can be mounted within the same spacial area by means of similar swivel fittings that create an offset parallelogram structure. The lengths of at least the fluid draining pipe sections and the supporting structure behind the wall are selected such that a downward slope is maintained over the entire fluid flow path between the sink and the fluid outlet regardless of sink position during usage.

Abstract: A tent camper with a lateral slide-out room. The tent camper includes a camper main body that is pulled in a longitudinal direction by a towing vehicle. A roof, aligned above the camper main body, is movable between a lowered, storage position and a raised, camping position. A lateral slide-out room is coupled to the camper main body. The lateral slide-out room is movable in a lateral direction between a retracted, storage position and an extended, operational position, thereby allowing additional living space to be provided to persons within the tent camper.

Abstract: A folding trailer which includes a slide-out room movable from a retracted position within the trailer to an extended position which adds additional living space to the inside of the trailer. The slide-out room includes a front wall, a rear wall and an exterior wall, with the floor attached therebetween and spaced above the trailer floor. A pair of lateral roller supports attached to the trailer floor along the front wall engages a roller track attached to the inside surface of the front wall. Similarly, a pair of lateral roller supports attached to the trailer floor on the other side of the slide-out room, and adjacent the rear wall, engages a roller track on an inner surface of the rear wall. A plurality of vertical roller supports attached to the trailer floor supports and contacts the lower surface of the slide-out floor.

Abstract: An extendable room comprises accordion type ceiling and wall panels which fold within panel covers when the room is retracted, thereby taking up much less interior space and leaving the interior of the primary structure just as attractive, albeit smaller, as prior to retraction. The wall and ceiling panels are hinged together with tongue and groove connections and are secured in the flat, extended configuration by steel cables running through the panels. The side walls also include windows which may be made clear and opaque electronically. The secondary floor is retractable below the floor of the primary structure when the room is retracted, permitting the room extension floor to become the primary floor.

Abstract: A fold-out tent camper is provided with a slide-out room providing increased living space. The slide-out room is supported through four-point linkages which extend between the opposite sides of the slide-out room and the corresponding edges of the aperture through which the slide-out room extends and retracts. The four-point linkages both guide the slide-out room as it extends and retracts, and also support the slide-out room when it is fully extended, thus eliminating the need for auxiliary supports.

Abstract: A lift for a top of a travel trailer includes flexible push-pull elements extending from a centrally mounted actuator unit thorough flexible and bendable guide conduits to outer end fittings adjacent corner jacks for raising and lowering the top. The guide conduits are connected to L-shaped guide members of outer end fittings disposed in alignment with the jacks. The L-shaped members are mounted for swivelling movement around vertical legs thereof to facilitate alignment with the flexible guide conduits and assembly of the parts.

Abstract: An expandable retract able portable structure is provided having a stationary portion and a movable portion. The movable portion pivotally encloses the stationary portion in the retracted configuration. A hydraulic, pneumatic or gear driven actuator carried by the floor of the stationary portion co-operates with a linkage mechanism to rotate the movable portion through approximately 90.degree. to the expanded position. The roof of the movable portion is hingedly connected to one wall. The unit expands or retracts in one single pivoting motion through approximately 90.degree..

Abstract: An interior arrangement used in an expandable room structure includes a first room section having a stationary floor with an upper surface. A second room section is movable relative to the first section between a retracted position and an extended position to expand the interior volume of the vehicle, and the second room section has a floor with a top surface. A pair of substantially parallel outer rails is provided for supporting the first room section, and a pair of substantially parallel inner rails is provided for supporting the second room section. Each of the inner rails is slidably mounted for longitudinal movement relative to one of the outer rails. An operating mechanism selectively moves the inner rails relative to the outer rails to extend and retract the second room section relative to the first room section.

Abstract: Mobile living quarters, such as manufactured housing or a recreational vehicle, is provided with a structure defining a main living quarters and a slide out room which is extended from the main living quarters when the unit is used, and is retracted into the main living quarters when the unit is to be transported. An actuation mechanism extends and retracts the slide out room, and a pivot mechanism is used to tilt the slide out room slightly in one direction when the slide out room is drawn into the main living area to thereby compress a seal between a sealing area on the slide out room and a sealing surface on the structure defining the main living quarters. When the slide out room is moved to the extended position, the slide out room is tilted in the opposite direction to thereby compress a second seal between another sealing area and a sealing surface.

Abstract: A synchronization device for use on recreational vehicles having slide out rooms that keeps the slide out room properly aligned with the frame of the recreational vehicle in order to ensure smooth operation. The device of the present invention includes a pair of elongated extensible members that connect the moveable frame to the fixed frame. Each of the members includes an inner end pivotally mounted to the fixed frame and an outer end pivotally mounted to the moveable frame, with the extensible members being shiftable between a folded, shortened position and an unfolded, extended position as the slide out room is extended. Each extensible member includes a hollow outer leg an extensible inner leg that is telescopically disposed within the outer leg. A pinion interconnects the extensible members and synchronizes the extension and retraction of the inner legs relative to the outer legs, and also synchronizes the folding or unfolding of the extensible members.

Abstract: A system for varying space of a vehicle having a fixed portion with occupiable space and a number of ground engaging wheels coupled to the fixed portion. An expandable portion is coupled to the fixed portion and has a rigid floor. The expandable portion is movable relative to the fixed portion to adjust volume of a living space defined by the fixed and expandable portions. The floor is configured for planar movement along a generally horizontal plane when the expandable portion is moved. The system has a first load bearing arm engaging the floor to support the expandable portion. The first load bearing arm is pivotally anchored to the fixed portion to rotate about a generally vertical first axis to correspondingly move the expandable portion. Also, the system has an operator controlled actuator coupled to the first load bearing arm to selectively rotate the first load bearing arm and thereby control position of the expandable portion relative to the fixed portion to provide adjustment of the living space.

Abstract: A slide-out mechanism for selectively extending and retracting a slide-out room through a slide-out room opening in a wall which automatically levels or aligns the slide-out room relative to the slide-out room opening in the wall comprises at least one stationary member, a retractable member slidably secured to the stationary member, and a threshold bracket for securing and supporting a front end of the stationary member on an upper surface of a portion of the wall defining a lower edge of the slide-out room opening. A support leg is preferably secured to a rear end of the stationary member for supporting the rear end thereof. The support leg is preferably height adjustable to permit leveling of the rear end of the stationary member relative to the front end.

Abstract: A fold down-expandable camper shell that collapses to a very small unit for storage. The collapsed unit is only slightly larger than a standard pick-up camper shell, auto top or boat cabin, yet when open, the camper body has normal standing headroom. The unit has a push out queen size bed that is set up above the cab, leaving the living area completely open. An air mattress and bedding, that are normally carried on the bed frame can be extended and filled, ready to use. Extension bars, that are joined by cables, can extend outward on both sides of the vehicle, to create an area for bunk beds or storage shelves while cooking, etc. A soft canvas type covering is attached to the unit so that it is sealed and protected from the elements. Windows and screens can be added for viewing and for airflow as desired.

Abstract: An expandable room structure is provided having relatively movable room portions supported by telescopically sliding tubes, at least one of those tubes being movable also laterally to pivot as the room portion floors slide into the same horizontal plane when the room structure is moving into expanded positions. In retracted positions the room portion floors are vertically spaced to permit one room portion to nest within the other. A rack and pinion drive arrangement is provided to cause relative movement between the tubes. Selective lateral movement of one of the tubes is permitted by engagement with an adjustably inclined surface extending out of the other tube such that the laterally moving tube pivots about the pinion to a desired degree. A ramp surface is formed on the abutting edge of the floor of one room portion, and the abutting edge of the floor of the other room portion moves up and down that ramp portion when transitioning between expanded and retracted positions.

Abstract: A trailer having a slideout mechanism for moving an extensible cabin between a retracted position wherein the cabin is substantially inside the trailer and an extended position wherein the cabin is substantially outside the trailer. The slideout mechanism comprising an extension assembly for positioning the cabin between the retracted and extended positions and a leveling assembly for vertically positioning the cabin floor between a raised position wherein the cabin floor is substantially above the trailer floor and a lowered position wherein the cabin floor is substantially level with the trailer floor. In one embodiment, the leveling assembly comprises a frame member having a predetermined profile for controlling the vertical movement of the outboard end of the cabin floor as the cabin is positioned between the retracted and extended positions. In other embodiments, the leveling assembly comprises a cam assembly or a riser assembly for controlling the vertical position of the cabin floor.

Abstract: An improved lift mechanism for raising and lowering the tops of pop-up tent campers and similar vehicles. The mechanism of the present invention is used to simultaneously raise or lower a pair of telescoping support posts that connect the extendable top to the body, and includes a pair of guide housings that connect to the telescoping posts. A pair of substantially incompressible flexible springs is slidably disposed within the guide housings, and a drive cable extends between the guide housings and connects the flexible springs so that movement of one of the springs produces a simultaneous movement of the other spring. A block housing having an internal pulley is attached to each end of the guide housings, so that a single drive cable can be used to activate both of the flexible springs at once.

Abstract: An operating mechanism for an expandable vehicle slide-out section includes a pair of inner rail members, each being slidably supported in an outer rail member secured to the vehicle body. Each of the inner rail members has an outer end attachable to the slide-out section. A power drive arrangement includes a drive shaft operably connected with the inner rail members to synchronize travel of each of the inner rail members. The power drive arrangement includes an integral motor-brake having a rotatable output shaft and a brake for positively stopping rotation of the output shaft and for preventing its further movement until released, so as to enable the slide-out section to be positioned between fully extended and fully retracted positions. A manual override system is adjustably mounted on the drive shaft to extend and retract the slide-out section should the power drive arrangement become inoperable.

Abstract: A retractable awning for a recreational vehicle slide-out which prevents rain, snow and other debris from collecting on the roof of the slide-out. The awning is provided with an inner edge secured to the adjacent wall of the recreational vehicle immediately above the slide-out roof. The opposite edge of the awning is connected to a roller journaled on arms pivotally mounted on the outer face of the slide-out. A locking mechanism automatically prevents rotation of the roller when the slide-out is in a retracted position to prevent billowing of the awning when the recreational vehicle travels and automatically allows rotation of the roller when the slide-out moves away from the retracted position to wind and unwind the awning onto the roller. The lock mechanism includes a lock arm which blocks rotation of the roller only when the slide-out is in the retracted position so that no operations or manipulations are required by the operator to lock or unlock the lock mechanism.

Abstract: An extensible surface area structure for expanding the area of a primary surface, comprising, a frame, a primary surface area supported by the frame and having an outer edge, an extensible surface area having an outer an inner edge and adapted for temporary storage in a superimposed position on top of the primary surface area, at least one extensible support beam secured to the frame at its first end, a leveling assembly secured to the extensible support beam at its second end and attached to the outer edge of the extensible surface area.

Abstract: A mobile housing is provided with a plurality of telescopic standards mounted on a base for movably supporting the top of the mobile housing between a lowered position and a raised position relative to the base. A first pair and a second pair of slidable pistons are mounted in the base for simultaneous movement between a first position and a second position, the movement of each of the pair of pistons being substantially parallel and in opposite directions to one another. A first pair and a second pair of tubes, are provided with longitudinally extending slots and a flexible conduit extends from each of the tubes to one of the standards. Each of the tubes of the first pair and each of the tubes of the second pair are disposed in spaced parallel relationship to each other between the first and the second positions.

Abstract: A coach, having an interior living space, which coach has at least one and no more than two expansion chambers. Each expansion chamber is formed as a box having top, side and bottom walls and one rear or front wall. The coach may be a trailer, an RV body disposed upon a truck chassis, or a recreational vehicle having a self-contained propulsion system. The coach may have instead of wheels as a support system, a series of vertical jacks or other support mechanism to thereby render the coach suitable for use as an office or an industrial facility. The coach features a spaced inner and outer wall construction and which may have no closing wall at the position at which the chamber is disposed. The chamber is adapted such that its sidewalls when in the retracted position are disposed between the inner and outer sidewalls of the living space.

Abstract: A trailer having a slideout mechanism for moving an extensible cabin between a retracted position wherein the cabin is substantially inside the trailer and an extended position wherein the cabin is substantially outside the trailer. The slideout mechanism comprising an extension means for positioning the cabin between the retracted and extended positions and a leveling means for vertically positioning the cabin floor between a raised position wherein the cabin floor is substantially above the trailer floor and a lowered position wherein the cabin floor is substantially level with the trailer floor. In one embodiment, the leveling means comprises a frame member having a predetermined profile for controlling the vertical movement of the outboard end of the cabin floor as the cabin is positioned between the retracted and extended positions. In other embodiments, the leveling means comprises a cam assembly or a riser assembly for controlling the vertical position of the cabin floor.

Abstract: A mobile living quarters includes a retractable or slide out room mounted for movement from a retracted position retracted within the main living area to an extending position providing auxiliary living area connected to the main living area. A scissors linkage is connected between the main frame and the retractable room for guiding the retractable room during extension and retraction and also equalizing forces on opposite sides of the retractable room to prevent binding. The scissors linkage includes a pair of arms which are pivotally connected to the frame of the mobile living quarters and to the retractable room. The pivots include a sliding pivot to accommodate sliding of the scissors arms as extension and retraction of the retractable or slide room occurs. A hydraulic actuator effects extension and retraction of the slide out room.

Abstract: Mobile living quarters, such as that provided by a recreational vehicle, is equipped with a slide out room which is retractable into the main living area when the unit is moved and is extended from the main living area to provide auxiliary living space when the unit is used. The slide out room is prodded with a floor that slides along the main floor of the unit and then drops to a position flush with the main floor of the unit as the room is moved into the extended position. A camming linkage controls movement of the floor relative to the walls of the slide out unit to move the floor between the sliding and flush positions.

Abstract: A retractable awning for use on mobile homes, recreational vehicles or the like having slide-out units as a part thereof includes an awning sheet that is secured along an inner edge to the side of the mobile home with the opposite edge being secured to a torsionally biased roll bar rotatably disposed on the outer ends of support arms pivotally mounted to the outer face of the slide-out unit. A flexible tie-down strap secures the awning in an extended position with the support arms projecting substantially horizontally away from the outer wall, and upon release of the tie-down strap, the awning automatically retracts to a position immediately adjacent to the outer wall of the slide-out unit. The awning sheet always overlies the top wall of the slide-out unit when the slide-out unit is extended and regardless of whether or not the awning is extended or retracted.
