Depressed Portion Spaces Body Supporting Surfaces Patents (Class 297/202)
  • Patent number: 7478871
Abstract: An improved bicycle seat or exercise bicycle seat comprised of a narrow anterior portion leading to a wider posterior portion. The improved bicycle seat accommodates, supports, protects, and relieves the male genitals from the pressure of the rider's weight. The posterior portion includes two support surfaces divided by an indented channel. The support surfaces properly remove the weight of the rider from the soft tissues of the perineal area and distribute it to the ischial bones of the pelvis. Located between the narrow anterior portion and the wider posterior portion are two recessed concave cavities separated by a sloped raised ridge and a perineal support projection. The rider's external genitalia are properly supported and protected in the recessed cavities.

  • Patent number: 6783176
Abstract: A bicycle seat that provides increased comfort during extended periods of use, due to a redistribution of the rider's weight. The primary components of the bicycle seat include a support shell/frame, a lightweight layer of padding, and a vinyl or plastic outer cover. A two-part front end section is designed to provide support for the upper, back portion of the rider's thighs. Allowing the thighs to bear part of the rider's weight, thereby reducing the amount left to be supported by the buttocks and groin area, is a novel aspect of the present invention. This front end section, combined with the angle of the seat's mounting on the bicycle's frame, is such that, when pedaling, the inside of the rider's thighs do not rub against the front end of the seat. The relatively broad tail section is designed to support the entire posterior of the rider in a manner that eliminates the rocking motion normally associated with the pedaling of the bicycle.

  • Patent number: 6378938
Abstract: A cycle seat such as a bicycle seat which comprises an abutment section which is inclined with respect to the horizontal. The abutment section is formed from two abutment segments which are connected together. The segments are dimensioned to support the gluteus maximus muscles adjacent the ischial bones so that the majority of the gluteus maximus muscles are not in contact with the seat and wherein the segments do not allow the rider to permanently sit in a vertical position without other support so that the rider is permanently supported in a generally standing position on the bicycle pedals so as to be in a position to deliver substantially maximum pedal power.

  • Patent number: 6371554
Abstract: A bicycle saddle which controls the force oppressing the perineal region of a human body, which enables to support the weight of a rider mainly by the hipbone and thighbone by means of reducing the force oppressing the genital region. The saddle also provides excellent ventilation, thereby minimizing the bad effects of the rider and provides for a comfort riding. The bicycle saddle is divided into at least two parts. A central part of the saddle contacting the sensitive parts of a human body is made of an elastic substance to be compressed more than the peripheral part. Further, the central part includes a level adjuster that adjusts the height of the variable saddle part from the peripheral saddle part by adjusting the height properly to the body shape of a rider. Therefore, most of the weight of the rider is supported by the peripheral part of the saddle while the weight and oppression concentrated on the central part is released.

Abstract: A bicycle seat assembly having a functional surface area comprising a main support surface region and a center tactile surface region. At the center tactile surface region there is a raised center surface portion and outwardly facing side tactile surface portions to engage upper rear and side thigh surface portions of the person. There are right and left and primary support zones spaced on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis to support the right and left ischial-tuberosities of the person who is in a seated pedaling position. The forward support surface portions on opposite sides of the center tactile surface region are contoured so that the leading edge thereof has an upward and rearward slope. The seat is arranged to accommodate 95% of the adult population in the U.S., enables the cyclist to operate effectively in the seated pedaling, the seated non-pedaling mode and the stand-up pedaling mode.

Abstract: A bicycle saddle includes a recessed portion in an upper side thereof, the recessed portion including a bottom having at least one opening. At least one guide plate is mounted in the bicycle saddle and includes an inlet that faces a front of the bicycle saddle. The guide plate and the bottom of the recessed portion of the bicycle saddle together defining a channel that communicates the inlet with the opening of the recessed portion of the bicycle saddle. A side vent is defined in each lateral side of the bicycle saddle. Thus, ambient air enters the recessed portion via the opening in the recessed portion and the side vents of the bicycle saddle during cycling to thereby provide a ventilation effect.

  • Patent number: 6257662
Abstract: A springless bicycle saddle is provided which includes a molded unitary shell and pad. Rails attached to the shell enable the saddle to be mounted on a bicycle seat and a resilient component disposed between the shell and the pad provides for cushioning. In addition, the three components may be assembled through the use of screws which also provide adjustment of the resiliency of the resilient component disposed between the pad and shell. The shell may include two pods with an arched member interconnecting the pods providing enhanced resiliency without contact with the rails. Upturned edges of the pod enables nesting of the pad and resilient component in the pods which eliminates stapling or sewing steps, thus reducing production costs.

Abstract: A bicycle seat is shown which includes a shell (11) formed from plastics material which has two buttock support portions (12 and 14) separated by a slot (16). The shell (18) includes a nose portion (18) and the transition between the support portions (12 and 14) and the nose portions (18) forms hinges (20 and 22) for allowing the support portions (12 and 14) to move independently with respect to one another in arcuate fashion during pedalling motion of the bicycle. A support rail (40) is coupled to the underside of the shell (18) and may have free ends (145) which act as stops to limit the amount of movement of the support portions (12 and 14). Springs (184, 190) may be provided between the mounting rail (40) and the shell (11). In other embodiments (FIGS. 42 to 80), the seal may include chambers for receiving air to cushion and provide support for a rider.

  • Patent number: 6224151
Abstract: A bicycle saddle in which the rear one third of the saddle is an elevated level platform supports the cyclist's weight on the ischial tuberosities, while forward of the platform the saddle's surface steps down and then continuously slopes downward towards the saddle's nose. Thus the only points of the rider's anatomy in weight bearing contact with the saddle are the ischial tuberosities, as the rider's soft perineal tissue is positioned above the stepped down and downward sloping portion of the saddle. Additionally, to guard against soft tissue contact with the saddle for some riders having a lowered or forward cycling position, a groove runs from the middle of the level platform along the saddle surface to the saddle's nose. The shell of the saddle is supported by an armature rail fabricated from rigid rod, which connects the saddle to the bicycle frame.
