  • Patent number: 5498062
Abstract: A "fold-out" or integral child restraint seat having a mechanism interconnecting a headrest member and a seat member for causing coordinated movement therebetween. When deployed the headrest member is automatically rotated to a raised position in coordination with movement of the seat member to its lowered position. Conversely, when stowed the headrest member is automatically rotated to a lowered position in coordination with movement of the seat member to its raised position. The integral child seat also provides an improved latching mechanism that is operable for positively retaining the integral child seat in both its stowed and deployed positions.

  • Patent number: 5472260
Abstract: A child seat module integrated with a rear vehicle seat, and including fold-down lower and upper segments, interconnected by a flexible and detachable hinge, and a plastic back panel mounted against the back frame of the bench seat. A plastic seat pad support platform is mounted on the inner surface of the lower segment. A pad having seat and back segments is removably mounted on the platform and against the back panel. A safety belt system is operably included in the module. The interconnected lower and upper segments are adapted to being folded down to form, with the platform and pad, a child seat cushion and leg support. Alternatively, the leg support may be removed for a child whose size is such that use of the leg support would be uncomfortable.

  • Patent number: 5468045
Abstract: An integral child seat having a back panel which is attached to the seat frame with an extensible, energy absorbing diaphragm. The diaphragm enables the child seat back panel to move forward relative to the seat frame during a vehicle collision to reduce the relative deceleration of a seat occupant's head compared to his/her shoulders, thus reducing the neck loads and neck injuries. As the diaphragm is extended, an enclosed space, defined in part by the diaphragm, increases in size. One or more small orifices are provided to allow a controlled flow of air into this enlarging space. Likewise, after extension, return of the diaphragm to its initial position is controlled by the required expulsion of air from this enlarged space. The orifices restrict the discharge of air from the enlarged space, avoiding a return impact on the seat occupant due to the rebound of the elastic diaphragm.

  • Patent number: 5449216
Abstract: A vehicular seat is disclosed having a built-in child restraint seat integrated into its underlying frame structure. Segments of the frame structure are adapted to yield in a controlled manner under certain high load conditions to absorb a portion of the loading that would ultimately be transmitted to a child strapped in the built-in child seat. The frame structure associated with the integrated vehicular seat of the present invention includes a seat cushion frame assembly and a seatback frame assembly. A modular child seat assembly is secured to the seatback frame assembly. The frame structure includes first yieldable means for permitting the seatback frame assembly to deform in a controlled manner relative to the seat frame assembly. The frame structure further includes second yieldable means for permitting the interconnection between the modular child seat assembly and the seatback frame assembly to also deform in a controlled manner.

  • Patent number: 5385384
Abstract: The present invention is directed to an integral child restraint seat having selected portions lined with an energy absorbing material. When a child occupant strikes and/or loads into the child seat, a portion of the total energy dissipated is absorbed by the energy absorbing material. Thus, the overall energy absorbed by the child occupant is reduced. The integral child seat also provides a unique seat latching arrangement including a pliable member that extends from the seat member and operatively engages a stationary portion of the child seat to latch the seat member in a stowed position. This pliable member also provides an integral protective cover that extends from the seat member and covers a portion of the vehicular seat, thereby preventing the vehicular seat from becoming soiled.

  • Patent number: 5035465
Abstract: An infant safety seat is provided on the rear side of an automobile seat back which is pivotable about a base hinge mechanism, between a position in which it leans to the rear so as to accommodate an adult passenger on the regular seat cushion, and a positon in which it leans forward so as to allow a removable infant safety seat cushion to be attached to the seat back. A seat back stopper is formed on the front edge of the removable infant safety seat. The seat back stopper projects between the bottom of the seat back frame and the relatively stationary seat cushion frame. With this arrangement if forces acting on the seat back in the rearward direction cause the dog clutch of a reclining mechanism of the seat back to fail, the seat back is prevented from rotating backwards and crushing the infant by means of the seat back stopper. Thus, it becomes unnecessary to provide a specially reinforced reclining mechanism on seats on which a rear mounted infant seat are to be mounted.

  • Patent number: 4943112
Abstract: Because of the complicated structure and expense, collapsible seats for use by children in automobiles are a rarity. A simple device of this type includes a pair of cushioned panels hingedly interconnected end-to-end which normally define a portion of a conventional backrest in an automobile, the panels being releasably retained in a stored position in a recess in the backrest for folding outwardly and downwardly to define a child's seat on the seat portion of the automobile seat, and a chest protector/armrest which is normally stored in a vertical position above the seat, and which is rotatable to a position in front of the child.

  • Patent number: 4902070
Abstract: An adult to infant convertible seat is described for automobiles and other moving vehicles which have a storage compartment behind the convertible seat. The infant seat is retractable into the storage compartment and extendible into the infant seat use position. The infant or child seat is provided with an upper back rest portion and lower seat portion which are selectively connected and locked to each other to permit unfolding of the seat when a child seat is to be used in a folded condition which substantially reduces the clearance radius of the seat thereby permitting the movement of the child seat in the folded condition into smaller storage compartments and areas of smaller dimensions.

  • Patent number: 4781412
Abstract: A rotating child's seat for mounting in the seat backrest of a vehicle, which includes a rotating frame having a seat portion attached to one side thereof and a padded back portion secured to the opposite side. The rotating frame is rotatably and adjustably mounted on fixed supports located in a bifurcation provided in the center section of the seat backrest. When located in functional configuration, the seat portion of the rotating child's seat faces forwardly of the backrest at a selected angle determined by a latch mechanism and extends over the rear bench seat in the vehicle to position a child securely in the back seat of the vehicle. When the rotating child's seat is not in use, the latch mechanism is released and the rotating frame can be rotated or pivoted on pivot pins linking the rotating frame to the fixed supports, in order to position the back portion in alignment with the bifurcated backrest to accommodate one or more additional adults in the rear seat of the vehicle.
