Patent number: 6022166Abstract: A self locking forkbolt for pivoting the end of a pivoting seat back frame to a vehicle body includes a pin that is locked into a slot by the end of a hook that swings on a pivot axis across the slot, from an open to a closed position. A locking lever fixed to the hook moves with the hook, and a cam lever pivoted to the same pivot axis, located on to of the locking lever, has a striker edge that is engaged by the pin first as the pin is pushed into the slot. The force transfer connection between the cam lever and the hook/locking lever is indirect, consisting of a spring that is compressed by the pivoting cam lever to, in turn, push on the hook. The locking lever pops into a latched position as the hook swings closed, and the spring remains at least slightly compressed, reducing rattle of the pin within the slot.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 1998Date of Patent: February 8, 2000Assignee: Lear CorporationInventors: Lloyd Walker Rogers, Jr., David A. Patent number: 4884843Abstract: A seat tilt mechanism includes a seat frame pivotally secured at its forward end to a floor mounted support. A first toggle link is pivotally secured at a pivot axis eccentrically displaced from the tilt axis for the seat and is in turn pivotally secured to a second link whose other end is pivotally secured to the rear of the seat frame about a support axis. An actuator is pivotally secured for rotation about the support axis together with the second link and preferably, the second toggle link is formed as a portion of the actuator. Moreover, the actuator forms a support leg for supporting the rear end of the seat in the seating position. A latch mechanism retains the seat in its seating position. The latch mechanism is supported by a latch housing which rotates in unison with the support leg so that both members are retracted beneath the seat as the seat is pivoted from its seating position to an access position which permits access to an area behind the seat.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 1989Date of Patent: December 5, 1989Assignee: Chrysler Motors CorporationInventor: Delbert D. Patent number: 4759580Abstract: A floor latching mechanism particularly adapted for attaching a bench seat to a motor vehicle floor which permits the seat to be conveniently removed from the vehicle. The floor latching mechanism includes a retractable actuation handle which drives a pair of hooks that are engageable with shafts attached to the motor vehicle floor. When the actuation handle is rotated, a cam partially lifts the bench seat and maintains the hooks out of engagement with the floor shafts. The floor latching mechanisms may be actuated to a parked position wherein the mechanism will not inadvertently reengage the floor shafts.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 1987Date of Patent: July 26, 1988Assignee: Hoover Universal, Inc.Inventors: Louis W. Patent number: 4627656Abstract: An automobile seat comprising a seat bottom rotatable around a transverse axis approximately parallel to a car body floor, a seat back inclinably mounted on the seat bottom, a seat bottom lock for releasably locking the seat bottom to the floor, a seat back lock for releasably locking the seat back to the seat bottom, and a link for interlocking these locks in such a manner that, when one of them is released, the other is automatically released. The seat bottom lock is provided with a striker fixed to the floor and a lock piece mounted on the seat bottom for engagement with the striker and the seat back lock is provided with a hook for locking the rotation of the seat back. The link transmits the movement of either the lock piece or the hook to the other. In a reclining seat, the seat back lock is formed to releasably lock a knuckle bracket of the reclining mechanism to the seat back or the seat bottom.Type: GrantFiled: April 2, 1985Date of Patent: December 9, 1986Assignees: Mazda Motor Corporation, Delta Kogyo Co., Ltd.Inventors: Hiroyuki Gokimoto, Isao Kiyomitsu

Patent number: 4606577Abstract: An automotive folding seat is adapted to be retracted to provide a wider entrance space for passengers. The seat back can be folded onto a seat cushion and the seat in its entirety can be pivoted to a retracted position wherein the seat cushion is aligned vertically with the seat back folded onto the seat cushion. A locking mechanism serves to hold the seat cushion in its normal operating position. The locking mechanism is engageable to a striker rigidly mounted on the vehicle body and associated with a hinge mechanism which latches the seat back in its normal operating position and allows pivotal movement to the folded position in response to release operation of an operation lever. The operation lever also causes the locking mechanism to release its locking engagement with the striker to allow retracting movement of the seat cushion.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 1983Date of Patent: August 19, 1986Assignees: Nissan Motor Company, Ltd., Nissan Shatai Company, Ltd.Inventors: Yasuo Hirama, Yoshihiro Umetsu

Patent number: 4257647Abstract: A latch assembly for a pivoted vehicle seat (14) which provides sufficient locking capability to permit a seat belt (15) to be mounted on the frame (10) of the seat as opposed to the base (16) of the vehicle. The latch assembly includes two slidable horizontally spaced apart latch blocks (20,20') mounted on the frame (10) of the seat (14) for engaging base mounted catches (22,22'). Two actuator arms (48,48') coupled to the frame, are operatively connected to each latch block (20,20') and are secured to and positioned by an operator actuated release member (36). Movement of the actuator arms (48,48') causes the latch blocks (20,20') to disengage the base (16) mounted catches (22,22') substantially simultaneously.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1978Date of Patent: March 24, 1981Assignee: Caterpillar Tractor Co.Inventor: Albert Gianessi
