Patent number: 4230414Abstract: A hinge device for supporting an armrest on a vehicle seat includes a ratchet mechanism in which ratchet teeth are disposed around the inside of a ratchet ring for engagement with a pawl carried by a rotor within the ring. A blocking ring coaxial with the ratchet ring is overlapped by the pawl and is carried along by engagement of the pawl in a recess of the blocking ring as the pawl ratchets over the teeth. After clearing the ratchet teeth, the pawl is lifted by cam action from the recess on to the inner surface of the blocking ring which masks the ratchet teeth and allows the pawl to be returned to its starting position where it is restored by cam action to its recess in the blocking ring wherein it can once again engage the ratchet teeth.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 1978Date of Patent: October 28, 1980Assignee: UOP Inc.Inventor: Ernest L. Patent number: 4159847Abstract: A spring loaded frame pivotably mounted in the backrest frame is easily unlocked by light pressure applied to a lever disposed at the side of the seat proper whereby the pressure of the seated person's back pressing against the backrest portion urges the pivotable frame to a new position, in which the pressure applied to the dorsal and lumbar regions of his or her back are substantially equal, and in which it is lockable.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 1977Date of Patent: July 3, 1979Assignee: Nissan Motor Company, LimitedInventor: Tomiji Arai

Patent number: 4125288Abstract: A reclining seat for a variety of different uses, but in particular for vehicles such as vans, motor homes, car seats and buses, in which a reclining back is pivoted to the rear portion of the seat section and a latch mechanism for retaining the back in a selected position consists of a striker plate attached to the back and a releasable lever mounted on the seat section for engagement with shoulders on the striker plate to hold the seat in selected positions. The back is urged forwardly by a spring, preferably a coil spring on each side between the seat section and the back, into engagement with a removable abutment on the seat section. The abutment can be removed and the back tilted forwardly sufficiently to relieve tension on the coil spring to facilitate replacement thereof.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 1977Date of Patent: November 14, 1978Inventor: George T. Hunter

Patent number: 4035021Abstract: A seat back frame member and a seat cushion frame member are connected by a pivot to permit adjustment of the reclining angle of the seat back. A sector is provided on the seat back frame member and is serrated to display a plurality of teeth disposed in an arcuate path about the seat back pivot. First and second latch bars, each having a serrated arcuate end surface, are pivotally mounted on the seat cushion frame member for pivotal movement between engaged positions in which the teeth of the latch bars engage the teeth of the sector and disengaged positions. A spring acts between the latch bars to urge rotation of the latch bars in opposite directions of rotation to their respective engaged positions. When the latch bars are in engaged position, forced pivoting of the back frame member in either direction relative the cushion frame member causes one of the latch bars to be forcibly wedged against the sector while the other latch bar tends to pivot in the disengaging direction.Type: GrantFiled: March 17, 1976Date of Patent: July 12, 1977Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventor: Robert C. Patent number: 3999247Abstract: A fitting for a vehicle seat having a tiltable backrest member includes one hinge member that is connectable to the backrest member and another hinge member that is connectable to the backrest member. A pivot arrangement connects the hinge members for relative pivoting movement, and an arresting arrangement is provided for arresting the hinge members in selected relative angular positions. The arresting arrangement includes a tubular boss on at least one of the hinge members and a pawl that is journalled on the boss for turning movement about the same. A screw or bolt extends through the boss and connects the hinge member to the associated seat member or backrest member.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1974Date of Patent: December 28, 1976Inventor: Heinz P. Patent number: 3958828Abstract: A reclining seat device including a fixed seat cushion base having a horizontal shaft and a seat back arm supported upon said base so as to be rotatable around the horizontal shaft. The seat back arm and the base are respectively provided with serrations, which are connected to each other under normal conditions. A release lever pivotably supported at the horizontal shaft includes means for releasing the connection of said seat back arm with the base when the release lever is turned, whereby the seat back may be rotatable around the horizontal shaft. The release lever is also provided with a return spring, and accordingly by adjusting the seat back at a suitable angle and releasing the release lever, the seat back may be set at a desired angle position.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 1973Date of Patent: May 25, 1976Assignees: Fuji Kiko Kabushiki Kaisha, Ikeda Bussan Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Hideo Ishida, Chusaku Yamanashi

Patent number: 3954245Abstract: A vehicle seat support assembly including a fluid spring that supports an upper seat base on a lower floor base at a vertical height corresponding to the adjusted position of an adjustable control linkage which extends between the seat base and a time delay valve whose operation controls the amount of pressurized fluid within the fluid spring. The control linkage includes an adjustment link pivotally mounted on the seat base for adjusting movement and connected to one end of a connecting link whose other end is connected to an actuating link that controls the valve. The control linkage actuates the valve so that the seat base is positioned at the same vertical height for any adjusted position of the linkage regardless of the seat occupant's weight. The control linkage is adjustable to vary the height at which the seat base is positioned and is prevented from transiently actuating the valve during dynamic vertical movement of the seat base by the time delay operation of the valve.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 1975Date of Patent: May 4, 1976Assignee: Lear Siegler, Inc.Inventor: Robert W. Costin

Patent number: T103201Abstract: An adjustable recline-control mechanism for furniture of the type comprising a carrier for an occupant, e.g. a seat-pan and a support e.g. a back-rest, reclinable relative to the carrier wherein the angle of recline is controlled by the mechanism which comprises a link one end of which is pivotally connected to the support while the other end is latchable by at least two co-operating latching portions which respectively prevent travel of the link in opposite directions, the respective latching portions being spaced apart relative to the pivot axis of the link such that a jolt to the front or back of the support exerts on the link a moment which biasses the link towards latching irrespective of the direction of the jolt.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 1981Date of Patent: July 5, 1983Inventor: James D. Robinson
