Locked Blade Patents (Class 30/161)
  • Patent number: 7234241
Abstract: A pocketknife has a handle, a blade, a lock assembly and a pivot pin assembly. The handle has a lower cover, an upper cover, a block and a blade lock. The blade is mounted pivotally in the handle and has a curved guide. The lock assembly is mounted in the handle and has a safety lock and a latch. The safety lock is attached to the blade and has a latch guide. The latch is mounted in the handle and has a resilient latch tab. The latch tab corresponds to the curved guide on the blade and engages the latch guide on the safety lock when the blade is closed in the handle. The pivot pin assembly is mounted through the handle, the blade and the safety lock. The lock assembly keeps the closed blade from being opened unintentionally by external impact.

  • Patent number: 7231718
Abstract: A locking tool includes a handle and an elongated tool blade having a body and a tang. The tool blade has a tang spline opening formed therein which defines an annular array of alternate spline teeth and splined slots. A transversely-extending lock member has a spline ring with an annular array of alternate spline ribs and spline grooves formed thereon complementary to the tang spline opening, and is translatable between a locked position and a released position. The tool blade is attached to the handle by the locking member such that when the lock member is in the released position, the tool blade is freely pivotable about the locking member. When the lock member is in the locked position, the spline ring engages the tang spline opening such that the tool blade is retained in one of a plurality of predetermined angular positions relative to the handle.

    Patent number: 7168172
Abstract: A saw including a handle, a saw blade, a front protective bow and a rear protective bow pivotally connected with the front protective bow. When unfolding the saw blade, the saw blade presses the front protective bow and makes the front protective bow drive the rear protective bow to pivot away from the handle. At this time, the front protective bow, the rear protective bow and the handle define an enclosed space. When folding the saw blade, the saw blade presses the front protective bow to pivot toward the handle, whereby the front protective bow and the rear protective bow are at least partially accommodated in a receiving slot of the handle.

  • Patent number: 7124509
Abstract: A “spring powered toggle joint lock” for a folding knife; comprising a blade lock of three primary elements. A rotating toggle link at the rear of the knife handle connected by a pivoting knee joint to a traveling toggle, which is in turn pivotally joined to the tang of the opening and closing blade. A spring configured so as to constantly urge the pivot points of the rotating toggle and traveling toggle into a straight line, generating an over-center action. The effect of the spring and toggle combination is to propel the opening blade towards open and the closing blade towards closed. Control pins attached to the traveling toggle and protruding to the surface of the handle, on both sides of the handle, provides the means to collapse the toggle lockup by thumb pressure, thereby allowing ambidextrous, one handed manipulation of a toggle locking folding knife.

  • Patent number: 7080457
Abstract: A folding knife includes a blade cavity defined by two liner plates into which a pivotal blade may reside. The blade, which is pivotally attached to liner plates at a pivot point, includes a tang having a recess that is parallel to the sides of the blade. A rod is pivotally secured to the blade within the recess. A spring is secured to either or both liner plates at one end and to the rod at the other end so that a pulling action is applied to the blade. The rod is attached to the blade with respect to the pivot point so that the action of the spring forces the blade into the blade cavity until the blade is rotated from the cavity past a critical point of angular displacement, after which the spring forces the blade to its fully open position. The invention further includes a variety of locking arrangements which ensure that once the blade reaches its fully open position, the blade will remain there until the user desires to close it.

The handle includes two panels that define a blade cavity for receiving a portion of the blade in an initial closed position. The knife further includes a pivotal blade locking arm and a pivotal lanyard locking arm. The blade is locked by selectively moving a portion of the blade locking arm into and out of a locking recess on the blade. The blade locking arm is an open frame. Preferably, the lanyard locking arm is disposed within the open frame of the blade locking arm. The lanyard locking arm can be moved to release the lanyard from the handle by squeezing the blade inward into the handle. • Patent number: 7051441
Abstract: A leaf spring assisted opener for a folding tool such as a folding knife. The folding tool includes tool pivotally carried by a handle. The tool defines a tang at the proximal end. A leaf spring is carried within the handle for assisting in the opening of the tool. The leaf spring defines an elongated, arcuate configuration having a distal end adapted to engage the tang of the tool. When in the closed orientation, the leaf spring is biased toward the tang of the tool, thus holding it in the closed position. The tang of the tool defines a shoulder strategically positioned such that as the tool is pivoted from the closed position, the leaf spring eventually engages the shoulder and begins to release the tension in the leaf spring. At this point, the tension in the spring serves to open the tool the remainder of the rotation.

Abstract: A folding knife having a blade and handle further includes a sheath which receives the exposed edge and knife point of the blade in an accommodating slot. A leaf spring in registry with the accommodating slot has a locking face that locks the blade into place and an unlocking face that releases the blade when the handle is rotated about the locked blade, thus allowing the knife to be released from the sheath in an open position. By use of the sheath, the blade can be double edged and can be longer than the handle.

Abstract: A folding knife includes a handle having a first handle half and a second handle half coupled together to define a slot on a longitudinal edge of the handle. A blade is pivotally connected to the handle and rotatable relative to the handle between a folded position and an unfolded position. A slider is movable in an elongated groove of the second handle half. The slider is spring-loaded and tends to be moved towards a front end of the handle, and a slider control is provided for moving the slider away from the front end. Furthermore, the blade has a cutout and the elongated groove of the second handle half is arranged so that the slider may be moved into the cutout when the blade is in its unfolded position, thereby preventing the blade from rotation and hence retaining the blade in this unfolded position.
