  • Patent number: 6612035
Abstract: A drywall cutting tool provides cuts in drywall material either parallel or perpendicular to a reference edge of the sheet, without repositioning the tool from the reference edge. The tool comprises a T square, with the head and stem portions immovably affixed to one another. The stem of the tool carries a slidably adjustable cutting body thereon, with the cutting body being secured through an elongate slot formed in the center of the stem portion of the device. The cutting body carries a pair of spaced apart cutting rollers or discs, and may be turned so the cutting axes of the two discs define a line either parallel or perpendicular to the reference edge of the sheet, and thus perpendicular or parallel to the stem of the tool.

  • Publication number: 20030140504
Abstract: A cutting tool and method for applying decorative patterns to floor coverings. The tool comprises a force applying body member having a slide member secure to the bottom of the body member. A knife edge secured by the slide member extends outwardly from the slide member and is used for marking or cutting an underlying floor covering. The slide member has a longitudinal channel adapted to receive the edge of a section of floor covering previously cut in a predetermined pattern and which serves as a template in order to cut the pattern into the underlying floor covering. As downward and forward pressure is applied to the body member, the apparatus is advanced along the edge of the pattern and a cut is made by the tool into the underlying floor covering at a dimension equal to the edge of the pattern. The cut pattern is removed and mated with the floor covering from which the template was cut. Likewise the template may be mated with the section of floor covering from which the pattern was removed.

  • Patent number: 6571477
Abstract: A tool for cutting strapping comprises a housing and a slot defined in a base of the housing. A blade is mounted upon the housing, and a handle is pivotally mounted upon the housing between a position remote from the blade and a position adjacent to the blade. A pusher is pivotally mounted upon the handle and is biased into engagement with the base by a spring so as to normally close the entrance to the slot. When strapping is to be cut, the strapping is inserted into the slot causing the pusher to be moved out of the way against the biasing force of its spring. Upon the strapping passing the pusher, the pusher returns to its original position whereby the pusher now engages the strapping. Manipulation of the handle toward the blade causes the pusher to push the strapping into engagement with the blade thereby cutting the strapping.

The blade is removably mounted on the spine such that the hood covers the blade when the knife is closed. The hood is biased closed and has a latch to hold it closed unless the latch is released. The upward rotation of the hood releases the latch, so that when the hood rotates down the latch automatically re-locks the hood closed. The hood cannot be release again with out releasing the button and re-depressing the button.

  • Publication number: 20030079351
Abstract: A deflectable safety shield extends transversely across a cutting plane in a protective guard position completely overlying the cutting edge of a utility knife. A portion of the shield extends over-center with respect to the cutting edge, thereby tending to hold the shield in the guard position in response to contact of the shield against the operator at the normal angle of engagement during follow-through that accompanies rapid slicing hand movements. The shield is resiliently biased for movement to the guard position by a torsion spring. An outwardly-turned flange portion of the shield provides an angularly offset leverage point for reacting the torsion spring when the operator desires to perform a cutting operation. The shield swings away from the cutting plane automatically in response to pressure engagement of the offset flange portion against the box surface, thus exposing the cutting edge.

  • Patent number: 6536115
Abstract: The present invention provides a knife with a replaceable blade which is spring-biased in the retracted position. The knife is designed such that the blade can only be extended by exerting a downward force and by turning the handle with respect to an inner housing. The handle has a tab affixed to the inside wall of the handle. The inner housing has an angled slot in its wall adapted to receive the tab. When the blade is fully retracted, the tab rests on the shoulder at the top of the inner housing. A straight downward pressure on the handle causes the tab to engage the shoulder and will not allow the blade to extend. When the handle is rotated, the tab enters the slot and the blade is forced downward. As this occurs, the blade extends through a slot at the bottom of a blade cover. When the blade is removed from the object to be cut, the spring forces the handle to move with respect to the inner housing and causes the blade to retract within the blade cover.

Overlying the base plate is a blade holder that engages the posts for movement with the post holder. A wall guide is formed from the blade holder by bending downwardly in spaced relation to the working edge of the base plate. A first indent is formed on the bottom surface of the blade holder at the junction between the wall guide and the blade holder. The blade holder has a first blade holding recess with a second slot exposed when a blade is in place. A notch on a blade-supporting strip attached on the inner wall of the wall guide, the inner wall, and the first indent forms a second blade holding recess. The first and second recesses define a blade holding area that has a length longer than the blade's length.

Abstract: A device for clamping and cutting an umbilical cord including a pair of differently colored clamps, each having a pair of legs joined at a hinge. A clamp holder including a cutting device supporting the clamps side by side with one another by engagement of flanged rails on the clamps in undercut slots of the clamp holder with the cutting device between them, for guiding the clamps in a sliding movement to advance the cutting desire between the clamps to cut a cord in use while compressing the legs of the clamps to clamp said cord. The clamp support disengaging from at least one of the clamps when the clamp is slid to a predetermined release point such that the clamp can be removed from the clamp holder in two directions each orthogonal to the direction of the sliding movement.

Abstract: The present invention provides for a cutting device for use with a template to cut a media. The cutting device is comprised of a handle having a first end and a second attachment end and a positioning stem having a mounting stem and a ring portion. The mounting stem is positioned on the second attachment end so that the ring portion is spaced a distance from the second attachment end thereby defining a template notch. A cutting means is rotatably positioned within the ring portion and used to cut the media, and is configured such that when the template notch of the cutting device is inserted into the template, a shape defining edge of the template is received in the template notch.

  • Patent number: 6367154
Abstract: The present invention is a utility knife adapted for measuring by incorporating a pair of hooks into the blade end of the handle of a common utility knife, which hooks are designed to removably secure the tab of a spring-biased measuring tape such that the tape may extend roughly laterally from the knife but also roughly parallel to the surface being cut. The angles of the hook relative to the knife end are designed to correct for measuring inaccuracies created by the distance that the knife blade must be held away from the surface to be cut; the invention allows the printed measuring surface of the tape measure to remain roughly parallel to the surface being cut, allowing for great ease in reading the measurements during cutting.

Abstract: A bag slitting apparatus for opening a sealed bag along an edge of the bag. The apparatus has a first arm having first outer and inner surfaces, and a second arm having second outer and inner surfaces. The arms are in tensioned movable opposed relationship to each other such that the first and second inner surfaces are movably positionable against each other. One of these inner surfaces is a bladed inner surface having projecting therefrom a bag cutting blade with a distal blade tip, while the other inner surface has a blade tip receiver. Exteriorly, the first and second outer surfaces are concavedly contoured for simultaneous opposingly-squeezing receipt of a finger and thumb of a user. Placing the edge of the bag between the blade tip and blade tip receiver, squeezing the arms together such that the blade tip pierces the bag and travels to the tip receiver, and thereafter sliding the apparatus along the length of the bag edge produces a slit in the bag through which contents can be retrieved.
