Abstract: A blade pivots on its tang into and out of a slot in a blade carrier. The carrier, in turn, slides in a handle between two positions. In the first position, the blade is prevented from pivoting out of the carrier by contact with the handle but in the second position the blade is free to rotate out of the slot to an extended configuration. The user slides the carrier between the two positions with a spring loaded button in the side of the handle.

  • Patent number: 5092045
Abstract: A locking mechanism (39) comprising a rectangularly-shaped block (40) seated in a corresponding opening (41) of a blade (31) and a corresponding opening of a handle scale (32). Block (40) depresses into opening (41) after which blade (31) is free to rotate between locked open and closed modes, effecting two-position lock mechanism. Other embodiments include a stepped blocks (61, 81) by which two or one notches are utilized to effect either a two-position or one-position lock mechanism, respectively. These blocks register in their respective openings (42, 73, 89) provided in handle scale. The register in the opening (89) in the scale for the one-position lock mechanism is off-set in a direction towards the center of rotation for the blade (31).

  • Patent number: 5036591
Abstract: This invention relates to utility knives used to cut various items, including cartons, cardboard, string and wallpaper. Specifically, the invention provides a disposable one-piece razor blade utility knife in which the blade is adjustable yet permanently affixed to the knife handle. When the complementary shells of the handle are open, the blade may be placed in a usable position in which the cutting edge will protrude out of the handle when the shells of the knife are later closed or in a safety position in which the blade will be fully retained in the handle when the knife is closed.

Abstract: A laterally foldable knife which includes a locking member slidably engageable with the blade to lock the blade into either its extended or retracted position. The locking member includes protrusions one of which is wedged between the blade proximal end and handle to lock the blade in its extended position. The other locking member protrusion is restrictively fitted within a blade proximal end notch to lock the blade in its closed position. A spring biases the lock member toward the knife blade proximal end.

Abstract: A utility knife comprises a hollow casing formed by a pair of elongated members pivotally mounted one to the other at one end of the casing. A blade passage is provided at another end of the casing. The elongated members are adapted for movement in substantially parallel planes between aligned closed functional and open diverging positions. The casing is provided with a mechanism adapted to carry and selectively position a blade. The utility knife further comprises a locking member pivotally mounted to one of the elongated members and adapted in a closed position thereof to secure the elongated members in their aligned closed position.

Abstract: A clasp knife has a pivotally mounted blade which can be swung between an operative extended position and a shrouded position within a body and handle using only one hand. The knife incorporates an actuating lever carrying a latching dog which locks the blade to the lever when the blade and the body are swung from the closed position to the open position while a release member is in a locking position. When the body is swung to the extended position while the release member is in the release position, the latching dog is released from the blade and the blade is detained in the body as the body is swung back to the inoperative closed position.

  • Patent number: 4604805
Abstract: A holder for a detachable blade has a handle part and a blade retaining part formed by a pair of body sections pivotally connected for movement between open and closed positions. A latch member supported within the hollow handle part, and which retains the body sections in closed position, is released by manually operating an associated push button disposed in an aperture in the handle part. Coengageable clamping surfaces on the blade retaining part cooperate in clamping engagement to retain a blade in the holder when the holder is closed. A thumb rest on the blade retaining part reduces risk of accidental contact with a blade secured in the holder.

A toggle joint is arranged to rotate the plate to move the pin and loosen the saw blade or to rotate the plate to move the pin and tension the blade. When the blade is tensioned, the toggle joint locks to hold the blade in tension. The frame has a bezel to fit over the end of the blade when the blade is in tension to prevent lateral movement of the blade. Abstract: A folding knife including a blade and a handle which are joined together by a pivot at a forward end of the handle, an axis of the pivot is in the same plane as the blade and the handle and joins same to a tang portion of the blade so that the blade can pivot laterally from an extended position through about 180.degree. to a second position where the blade lies within the confines of the handle. The top and/or bottom of the tang is generally rectangular in section and engages in a similarly shaped recess formed in upper and/or bottom arms of the handle, the upper and/or bottom arms of the handle incorporate a mechanism for moving the arms apart to enable the tang to be disengaged from the recess to swing the blade laterally either to its open or closed position. The top of the tang can have locking surfaces associated therewith which engage with a recess in the arm of the handle adjacent thereto to lock the blade in its open or closed position.

Abstract: A holder for detachable, apertured blades has two body sections connected intermediate the ends thereof for pivotal movement between open and closed positions. A blade received within a recess at one end of one of the body sections, when the holder is in open position, is retained on a projection which extends through and beyond the recess at the one end. A latching member mounted in fixed position on the other of the sections cooperates with the projection to interlock the blade in the holder when the body sections are pivoted to closed position. A detent at the free end of the handle portion of the holder releasably retains the two body sections in closed position.
