Abstract: According to a chain saw braking system, engagement between a front end portion of a belt and a main body by an engagement member is released at the time of application of an impact. When a front end portion is pulled by the spring force of a compression coil spring, an elongate hole for protrusion is engaged with a protrusion to restrict a rear end portion from being moved in the same direction as the front end portion. Thus, it is possible to strongly tighten a drum by the belt to thereby reliably stop the movement of a chain. With this arrangement, the chain can be prevented from being damaged when a chain saw is accidentally dropped onto the ground due to an impact applied thereto.

Abstract: A system effectuates increased cutting device safety through rapid detection of abrupt motion of the device, and/or the proximity of the device cutting elements in relation to its operator. An signal processor receives, generates and processes signals from multidimensional relative distances measurement module(s) and adjusts an electro-mechanical interface with the cutting device drive and/or power mechanism as well as actuators to counteract dangerous movements of the chainsaw. Distance measurement modules resident on the user may be spatially dispersed to protect multiple areas of potential interaction between device and operator. The saw chain (6) includes cutting links (14), lateral connecting links (12) and center drive links (10). The links are pivotally connected to each other with rivets (18). The drive links (10) engage with rakers (11) in the guide groove (8); whereas, the connecting links (12) are supported on guide surfaces (9) provided laterally of the guide groove (8). The guide bar (3) is fixed to the housing (2) of the motor-driven chain saw (1) at its attachment end (4) and the free tip (22) of the guide bar (3) has a direction-changing section (21) for the saw chain (6). In the region of the direction-changing section (21), guide plates (23, 43) are attached to the guide bar (3).

Abstract: A chainsaw guide bar includes a bar body and a nose member removably attached to the bar body by an elastic snap-in coupling, eliminating the need for separate fastening elements. The snap-in coupling includes dimples formed in tongues of the nose member, the dimples being received in holes formed in a web of the bar body. The dimpled portions of the tongues are elastically flexible in a thickness direction of the guide bar to enable the nose member to be inserted or removed.

Abstract: An easily engageable and releasable chainsaw bar guard for protecting an individual carrying a chainsaw and for preventing damage to the cutter chain and saw dogs of a chainsaw. The bar guard comprises an elongated stiff hollow sleeve whose interior space is just slightly larger than the bar and chain to be protected. The sleeve has an opening at the proximal end for sliding the sleeve onto the guide bar, and is closed at the other end to protect the end of the bar and cutter chain. A snap-clip mechanism is fixed to the sleeve for releasably latching the proximal end of the guard to the chainsaw. The snap-clip mechanism biases a retaining claw into contact with the chainsaw bar between the nuts on the saw bar attachment/adjustment bolts. The sleeve and the snap-clip mechanism can be selectively configured to accommodate chainsaw bars of different shapes and dimensions and the spacing of whose guide bar adjustment nuts varies.

Abstract: A chain saw is provided that comprises a motor which rotatingly drives a cutting chain via a sprocket mounted on a spindle (34) via a clutch mechanism. When the clutch mechanism (17) is engaged, a pivotal handle guard (22) interacts with the clutch mechanism to disengage the clutch mechanism (17). The clutch mechanism is biased towards disengagement. An actuating means (8, 68) is provided such as a switch which is releasably connected via a pin located within a groove to the clutch mechanism (17). The actuating means can override the biasing force to engage the clutch (17) when the actuating means (8, 68) is connected to the clutch (17). The pivotal handle guard (22) is configured so that it interacts with the pin wherein, when the pivotal handle guard (22) is activated, it detaches the actuating means (8, 68) from the clutch mechanism (17) by knocking the pin out of the groove.

Abstract: A hedge clipper is provided that has an internal combustion engine that is to be started by hand. By means of a clutch and a gear mechanism, the engine drives cutting blades in a reciprocating manner; the cutting blades are guided and held in a cutter bar. Disposed on the output side of the clutch is a brake drum around which extends a brake band. The first end of the brake band is fixed to the housing, and the second end of the brake band is held on a pivotable brake lever that is acted upon by a brake spring that urges the brake band into engagement against the brake drum. The brake lever can be moved into an inoperative position of the band brake by a release lever against the force of the brake spring. The release lever cooperates with an adjusting cam that is disposed directly adjacent to the brake lever and in the inoperative position of the band brake forms a rest stop for the brake lever, receiving the force of the brake spring.

Abstract: A chain saw brake device that can instantly halt the rotation of a cutting chain when a motor drive switch is turned off. The chain saw brake device includes a brake band wound around a brake drum, such that by operating a hand guard and pulling the forward end of the brake band, the brake band is tightened around the brake drum, thereby stopping the cutting chain. The rear end of the brake band is fixed to a bent rod, and the bent rod is urged rearwardly by a coil spring when the drive switch is turned off, causing the brake band to tighten around the brake drum. • Patent number: 5878499
Abstract: The invention is a cutter bar for a chain saw which permits quick and convenient trimming of hedges and shrubbery. The cutter bar is of conventional design, being relatively thin and elongated, and supporting a cutting chain which extends around its periphery. Additionally, the cutter bar of this invention has a plurality of spaced-apart tines which extend transversely out from the top and/or bottom of the cutter blade. The tines are fastened to or extend from a side or edge of the cutter blade, optionally by rivets passing through a shim or spacer--the tines are not connected to each other by a web or common casting other than the cutter blade. This way, the web or common casting does not add to the size, bulk, or weight of the cutter blade, allowing it to remain less burdensome and less interfering during cutting. In a preferred embodiment, the spacing on the cutter bar between tines varies so that branches or limbs of varying diameter may be accommodated by the cutter blade while cutting.

Abstract: The chain of an electromotive chain saw is quickly stopped by the combined use of an electric brake and a mechanical brake when a trigger member is turned off. The rear end of a brake band disposed to tighten a brake drum by operating a hand guard is secured to a bent rod. When the trigger member is released, the brake band is normally tightened around the outer periphery of a brake drum by the urging force of a coil spring. When the trigger member is released, a circuit provided with a brake winding is closed, thereby applying a dynamic braking force. When the dynamic brake force is applied, a centrifugal clutch is released quickly and the speed of stopping the brake drum is accelerated.
