Abstract: A reciprocating saw includes a body and a slider supported by the body such that the slider is slidably movable in a longitudinal direction of the body and is pivotally movable in a vertical direction. A first motion conversion mechanism is operable to convert the rotational movement of the rotary member into a reciprocal movement of the slider in the longitudinal direction. A second motion conversion mechanism is operable to convert the rotational movement of the rotary member into a reciprocal pivotal movement of the slider in the vertical direction. The second motion conversion mechanism includes an arm having one end vertically pivotally connected to the slider. An actuating member is rotatable with the rotary member and has an abutting surface on which the other end of the arm slidably abuts. The abutting position of the other end of the arm on the abutting surface is varied as the actuating member is rotated, so that the vertical position of one end of the arm is varied.

  • Patent number: 5193281
Abstract: An apparatus for connection to a reciprocating saw changes the direction in which cutting takes place from the reciprocating direction of the saw to a different direction. A first push rod is connected to the saw bar for linear movement in the reciprocating direction of the saw. A second push rod having a saw blade connected thereto is arranged for linear movement in a direction different than the reciprocating direction of the saw. A transmission disposed between the push rods transmits the reciprocating movement of the first push rod to a corresponding reciprocating movement of the second push rod, thereby imparting a cutting motion to the saw blade. The reciprocating direction of the second push rod with respect to the first push rod can be either fixed or adjustable. Optionally, the apparatus can be pivotably connected to the saw so that the angular disposition of these elements with respect to one another can be adjusted as desired.

Abstract: A lightweight power tool includes a housing having a handle and an implement projecting form the housing. A drive mechanism is included as part of the housing for moving the implement relative to the housing. A power source that includes an electric motor is disposed at a location removed from the housing. A flexible power transmission line connects the housing and the power source. The housing includes a transmitter for generating an on-off signal, which transmitter is activated by a manual switch included as part of the housing. The power source includes a receiver for receiving the on-off signal generated by the transmitter. Because the power source is not included as part of the housing, the housing is very lightweight and maneuverable. Accordingly, the power tool can be manipulated conveniently by handicapped persons, those having small hands, or those having less than average strength.

  • Patent number: 5165173
Abstract: A jigsaw blade (4) having diametrically opposed bayonet lugs (10) is retained within a bayonet fitting (6) provided on the end of a jigsaw drive shaft (3) by a locking device, which can be moved to permit removal of blade without the use of a separate tool. In one embodiment the locking device comprises a locking member (13) which engages the upper end (11) of the blade and is biased towards the blade by a spring (14). A tension member (18) is connected to the locking member (13) and to a manually operable tensioning device, whereby the locking member (13) may be lifted to compress the spring (14) until lugs (17) on the locking member (13) are clear of entry slots (6) of the bayonet fitting. The blade (4) may then be rotated to align the lugs (10) with the entry slots (8), and the blade removed. In an alternative embodiment, the locking member is a screw which engages the upper end (11) of the blade, and is rotatable by a screw rotating member with which it is in permanent sliding engagement.

Abstract: A motorized reciprocating tool unit releasably receives a saw, file or like tools and includes a counterweight unit to stabilize system operation. The is greater than a weight necessary to compensate for the forces created during the working action. A variable counterbalance weight unit may be used to create during the tool operation to compensate for the changes in the reactive loading characteristic. The variable compensation counterweight unit includes a counterweight which is slidably mounted and a pivoting lever moving the counterweight in an opposite direction from that of the tool holder and drive. In the variable unit, the tool holder is mounted for pivotal movement and is spring loaded to the standby position such that work reaction forces deflect the tool and holder resulting in a relocation of the lever coupling to the counterweight unit. The ratio of the length of the lever arm varies to change the stroke of the counterweight and the counterbalance forces.
