  • Patent number: 6428113
Abstract: A low spoke count high spoke tension bicycle wheel having paired spokes that cross between the hub and the rim is disclosed. The wheel has a center plane and comprises a bicycle wheel hub having first and second hub flanges on first and second sides, respectively, of the wheel center plane, a rim, and nine or fewer pairs of first and second spokes each having a first end which is connected to one of said hub flanges or to said rim and a second end which is threadably received in a nipple which is seated at a spoke bore in said rim or in said hub. The wheel has excellent lateral stiffness which gives a bike on which the wheel is mounted excellent resistance to speed wobble or shimmy, in the case of a front wheel or to axle deflection, in the case of a rear wheel, and the spokes in the pair cross the wheel center plane between the hub and the rim, for added lateral strength. The first and second spokes of each pair are not connected to each other and have a combined static tension in excess of 200 pounds.

  • Patent number: 5806935
Abstract: A tension-lock system for the spokes of a spoked wheel includes a nipple having both internal threads (which mate with the external threads at one end of a spoke) and external threads. A lock-nut having internal threads to mate with the external threads of the spoke nipple, and is at one end convex shaped. A washer which is at one end, concave shaped to mate with the convex surface of the nut. As the wheel is being assembled, the lock nut and washer are slid over the threaded end of the spoke. The threaded end of the spoke is then placed through the hole in the rim. The nipple is then threaded onto the threads of the spoke until the wheel is in a "trued position". The washer and lock nut are then tightened onto the nipple, and against the rim, thus preventing the nipple from turning on the spoke and thereby maintaining the wheel in the "trued position".

  • Patent number: 5779323
Abstract: A spoked wheel includes a wheel rim, a wheel hub, and a plurality of spokes that are formed integrally from fiber reinforced plastic and that interconnect the wheel rim and wheel hub. Each spoke has an intermediate portion with a symmetrical oval cross-section, a nub larger than spoke apertures in hub flanges of the wheel hub, and a bend interconnecting the nub and the intermediate portion. The bend changes gradually from the circular cross-section of the nub to the oval cross-section of the intermediate portion. The nub and the bend have abutment faces which contact tightly inclined faces of a corresponding spoke aperture so as to secure the nub and the bend on inner and outer sides of the hub flange. Each spoke further has a foot portion and a transitional portion extending from the intermediate portion and changing gradually from the oval cross-section to an elliptical cross-section of the foot portion. Each of a plurality of washers is disposed between the wheel rim and one of the spokes.

  • Patent number: 5673976
Abstract: Nipples, for example, useful in joining a spoke to the rim of a bicycle wheel, are provided. Such nipples include an enlarged head, and an elongated shank joined to and extending from the enlarged head and having an outer peripheral surface; and a passageway including an inlet defined by the elongated shank. The passageway is at least partially defined by an interior surface of the elongated shank and by a threaded surface. The outer peripheral surface of the elongated shank includes at least one spline, preferably a plurality of splines, each of which extends generally longitudinally. The inclusion of such spline or splines has been found to allow the nipple to be turned so as to effectively tighten the spoke to the rim with a reduced risk of damaging the nipple. Apparatus useful for turning such nipples and spoked wheels including such nipples are also within the scope of the present invention.

  • Patent number: 5228756
Abstract: A rim for a spoked bicycle rear wheel has rim holes laterally displaced by an amount (E) from an axis passing through the center of the cross-section of the rim. Such a rim can be subject to undesired tilting under stress imposed by spokes connected between the rim and the wheel hub and placed under tension. The rim side containing the spoke nipples is more highly loaded. To bring about balance of the tensions on both rim sides, the rim cross-section has an asymmetrical shape so that there is more rim material on the more highly loaded side and so that that side is also stiffer. The compressive forces in the rim material are better balanced, making it possible to use less expensive, conventional materials.
