The rear idler wheel also has an assembly to permit the rear idler wheel to pivot laterally. An alignment feature is incorporated into the front idler wheel assembly to permit adjustment of the alignment of the front idler wheel relative to the rear idler wheel. A tensioning mechanism is provided at the rear idler wheel to maintain the tread in tension. A pivot is provided between the frame and the rear idler wheel, and located forward from the hub of the idler wheel, such that increased load on the frame tends to push the idler wheel rearward to further tension the tread.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 2004Date of Patent: June 3, 2008Inventor: Lyn Rosenboom

Publication number: 20040227400Abstract: A tensioner for a traction member, in particular a belt of a traction drive for an internal combustion engine, includes a base constructed for rotation about a rotation axis and having a pivot arm. The pivot arm has a free end for connection of a rotatable tension roller which bears against a traction member. A spring member urges the pivot arm to seek a forced engagement of the tension roller upon the traction member. Disposed between the base and the pivot arm is a damping element for damping an adjusting movement of the pivot arm. A pivot bearing supporting one portion of the base on a machine part for rotation about the rotation axis, whereby the rotation of the base in relation to the machine part is realized by an actuator to thereby adjust a biasing force of the traction member.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 22, 2004Publication date: November 18, 2004Applicant: INA-SCHAEFFLER KGInventors: Manfred Kraus, Michael Bogner

Patent number: 6715575Abstract: A suspension system for suspending an endless track beneath a tracked vehicle chassis. The suspension system can be a fully coupled suspension, a partially coupled suspension or a non-coupled suspension. The suspension system includes at least one elongated suspension rail having a front portion, a rear portion and a bottom track-engaging portion. At least one suspension arm has an upper end adapted for pivotal connection to the vehicle chassis and a lower end pivotally connected to the suspension rail. The lower end of the suspension arm can optionally have a displacement with a non-linear component. A biasing mechanism provides a biasing force to bias the suspension rail away from the vehicle chassis. The track tensioning system coupled to the suspension arm applies a tensioning force to the endless track in response to displacement of the suspension arm. The tensioning force generates a supplemental force transmitted by the endless track that augments the biasing force of the biasing mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 2002Date of Patent: April 6, 2004Assignee: Formula Fast RacingInventor: Gerard J. Patent number: 6641235Abstract: A track tensioning system for a tracked vehicle having both a frame with left and right side members as well as left and right tracks that are both configured to translate along the ground to move the vehicle includes left and right wheel plates located substantially adjacent to a respective side member. Left and right wheels are coupled to the respective left and right wheel plates. The left and right wheels are coupled to the left and right tracks and rotate on a rotational axis so that, as the tracks translate along the ground, both wheels rotate with the tracks. For providing track tensioning to the tracks, each wheel plate pivots against the respective side member of the frame on a pivot axis that is displaced form the rotational axis. The left and right wheel plates may pivot in substantially parallel pivot planes. The substantially parallel pivot planes may be vertical. The left wheel plate may pivot around a left pivot axis and the right pivot plate may pivot around a right pivot axis.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 2001Date of Patent: November 4, 2003Assignee: Jarraff Industries Inc.Inventor: Lee Stephen Boyum

Publication number: 20030117017Abstract: A track tensioning system for a track assembly having, an idler wheel, a drive wheel, a drive track entrained about the drive wheel and idler, and a hydraulic motor operable to advance the drive wheel. A drive circuit is operable to supply pressurized fluid to the hydraulic motor. An actuator coupled to the idler wheel has a travel chamber and a recoil chamber, and the recoil chamber is pressurized to urge the idler wheel in a first direction away from the drive wheel to tension the track. A controlled delivery mechanism in fluid communication with the drive circuit and the travel chamber of the actuator is operable to receive from the drive circuit pressurized fluid supplied to the hydraulic motor and responsively deliver a controlled quantity of fluid to the travel chamber of the actuator. The actuator is operable to reduce the track tension responsive to receipt of the controlled quantity of fluid.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 19, 2002Publication date: June 26, 2003Inventor: Brian D. Patent number: 6543861Abstract: A tensioning device is provided for maintaining the tension on a continuous flexible track of a track apparatus. The track apparatus includes an idler wheel which engages the flexible track and which is movable between a first non-deflected position and a second deflected position. A dampening mechanism extends between an idler axle which supports the idler wheel and the frame of the track apparatus in order to exert a force on the idler axle to urge the idler wheel towards the non-deflected position. The dampening mechanism progressively increases the force on the idler axle as the idler wheel moves towards the deflected position.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 2000Date of Patent: April 8, 2003Assignee: AgTracks, Inc.Inventors: Glenn W.
