  • Patent number: 5302857
Abstract: An adapter for connecting an electrical load which is mobile, such as the electrical system of a pleasure craft, to a stationary power source, such as the electrical pedestal at a marina. In its preferred embodiment, the adapter serves to connect a higher voltage load (such as a 240 volt electrical load of a pleasure craft) to a pair of conventional 120 volt sources. Input cables include a pair of connectors for independent connection to sources on the pedestal. Isolation means within the adapter serves to isolate the input connectors from each other during the connection operation such that a user holding one connector while connecting the other will not receive an electrical shock. Sensing means within the adapter determines that the sources are in the proper relationship to sum to the level required by the mobile load. When the sensing means determines that the sources are connected and in the proper relationship, contacts are closed connecting the summed inputs to the output for driving the load.

  • Patent number: 5287008
Abstract: An electrostatic discharge noise suppression method and system is disclosed for electronic devices, particularly those connected to data buses. Electrostatic discharge protection is provided by breaking high-frequency ground loops by inserting common mode inductors where they can be most effective-in the DC power supplies themselves, in the DC power connections, or just behind the DC connector in the electronic devices. Saturation of the cores of the common mode inductors is prevented in a preferred way by equalizing supply and return currents in the common mode inductors and by preventing DC ground currents from flowing in a chassis between the power supply and the electronic device.

  • Patent number: 5285113
Abstract: Input current from the automobile lighting circuitry is conducted to movable poles on a first relay. Normally open contacts in the first relay are connected through output conductors to corresponding lighting circuits on the boat trailer. The first relay contacts close when operating voltage is applied to the first relay coil via a normally closed contact in a second relay. When a float switch on the trailer enters water, it closes, thereby actuating a transistor which, in turn, actuates the second relay. Upon actuation, the normally closed second relay contact opens, thereby deactivating the first relay and arresting current flow to the trailer. The transistor is maintained in an "ON" state for a period of time after the trailer emerges from water by current from a capacitor. The capacitor receives a charge via the second relay upon application of the automobile brake pedal only when the transistor is in the "ON" state.

  • Patent number: 4929925
Abstract: An alarm system monitors a region, and includes a transducer supported to aim toward a boundary of the region. The transducer transmits sonic waves and receives echoes. The system generates an initial value corresponding to the distance between the transducer and a boundary of the region at one time, and activates the transducer at a later time to generate a current value corresponding to the distance between the transducer and a location from which the echoes originate. A control compares the current value to the initial value and activates an alarm when the current value differs significantly from the initial value. In one embodiment of the invention, the transducer aims toward a window of a vehicle and thereby detects either opening of the window or an associated door, breakage of the window, or intrusion into the vehicle between the transducer and the window. Transducers mounted on the underside of a trunk lid and a hood detect lifting the trunk lid or hood, respectively.

Abstract: The present invention is a safety system for a gas operated appliance in a vehicle. The system includes means for generating an electrical signal, such as a pre-determined voltage. The system also includes means for interrupting this electrical signal. One such means is a gas sensing means which is designed to interrupt the electrical signal in response to sensing gas. Another such means is an inertia switch means which interrupts the electrical signal in response to detecting a rapid changes in vehicle inertia or vehicle orientation. Yet another such means is a high temperature switch means which interrupts the electrical signal in response to detecting an elevated temperature in an area near said appliance. Finally, the system includes an emergency kill switch means for manually interrupting the electrical signal. The system further includes a fuel tank and a gas line between the fuel tank and the appliance.

Abstract: It is an object of the present invention to provide a collision detector for a vehicle, capable of avoiding the adverse effect of the diagnostic pulses on the detection of a collision so that the failure of the acceleration sensor can be diagnosed correctly. A collision detector in accordance with the present invention comprises a diagnostic pulse generator which applies diagnostic pulses to an acceleration sensor to detect the failure of the acceleration sensor, and a diagnostic circuit which stops the output diagnostic pulses of the diagnostic pulse generator when the output of the acceleration sensor exceeds a malfunction avoidance level which is lower than a reference collision level.

Abstract: An EMR containment system coupling an EMR contained computer chassis and a wide band video monitor includes three plastic fiber optic cables terminated in a plug at each end. The computer chassis includes a socket having an electrically conductive surface in which three cylindrical fiber optic wave guides are positioned, each having at least a 3/1 ratio of length to diameter. Optical diodes are positioned at the end of each wave guide for coupling wide band R, G and B video and sync signals to and from the fiber cables when the plugs are seated within the sockets. A microswitch communicates with the rear of one of the sockets and is physically operable by a removable actuator carried by the mating plug for selecting between monochrome and color monitors.

  • Patent number: 4853556
Abstract: In an electrical desired-value transmitter, particularly for an electronic gas pedal system, a return spring (5) as well as a force elastic jump spring (15) arranged parallel to it are provided. The desired-value transmitter has an electric path converter which gives off an electrical desired-value signal. In order to verify the proper operation of the return spring, a contact spring (9) of a first safety switch contact (10) acts on it in such a manner that the force of the return spring is transmitted to the contact spring. In the event that the return spring is broken, the safety switch contact assumes a position which is characteristic of this and gives off a corresponding signal which can reduce the output of the engine. The electric path converter may be a potentiometer.

  • Patent number: 4812671
Abstract: A circuit for disengaging an electrically actuated transmission brake of a racing car has a bank of transistors in series with the brake to hold the brake on at the beginning of a race. The bases of the transistors are connected through normally open contacts of a relay to the emitter of a transistor that can be turned on or off by an optoisolator and the brake is connected through diodes to the relay coil to isolate the transistor bases once the brake has been disengaged. The optoisolator is connected, through diodes, to the zero count terminals of two clocked, programmable counters either of which will turn the optoisolator off at the end of a count. Reset terminals of both counters are connected to the outputs of a flip-flop to disable one counter and toggling of the flip-flop is effected by closing normally open contacts of a second relay to complete a circuit between the flip-flop input and a voltage regulator output through a Schmitt trigger.
