Patent number: 4820002Abstract: A filing cabinet includes a safety interlock that prevents more than one drawer from being opened at a time. The safety interlock comprises a column of endwise abutting catches mounted to the cabinet wall for vertical reciprocation thereon. The ends of the catches are formed with tabs. The tabs of adjacent catches cooperate to define gaps of predetermined spacing. Actuator means on each cabinet drawer are aligned with the catch gaps. When a selected drawer is opened, the actuator means thereon enters the associated gap and displaces upwardly any higher catches. Upward displacement causes the gaps between higher adjacent catches to be displaced into the paths of the actuator means of any higher drawers, thereby preventing any higher drawers from being opened. The retainer of an open drawer blocks upward displacement of any lower catches, thereby preventing lower drawers from being opened. A slide is reciprocably mounted on each retainer.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 1987Date of Patent: April 11, 1989Assignee: Tab Products CompanyInventors: Lloyd Lechner, Kent Thomas

Patent number: 4605266Abstract: A drawer unit having a lock mechanism for controlling a plurality of drawers. The lock mechanism employs a vertically elongated lock bar having a plurality of vertically spaced locking tabs mounted thereon at selected intervals, which lock tabs are permanently fixed to the bar. The drawer unit employs a cabinet which mounts therein the plurality of drawers, which plurality can vary in number and/or size to permit the user to select the optimum drawer arrangement. Irrespective of the number and/or sizes of drawers selected, the same lock bar cooperates with and lockingly holds all of the drawers in a closed locked position when activated, without requiring any rearrangement of the lock bar. An open drawer can also be readily moved into its closed position without undue effort since the lock bar is displaced against the urging of a spring so as to permit the lock stop on the activated drawer to move therepast.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 1984Date of Patent: August 12, 1986Assignee: Haworth, Inc.Inventors: Thomas J. Patent number: 4480883Abstract: An anti-tip blocking device is disclosed for preventing the opening of more than one file drawer in a file cabinet at the same time. The device includes a plurality of locking bars and cam elements vertically stacked in a vertical channel one upon the other alternately to slide vertically therein. The cam elements are engaged by pins carried by the file drawers whereby opening of any file drawer requires additional vertical space in the channel to be occupied. With the free vertical space in the channel limited to the space required for the opening of one drawer, once any one drawer is opened, no other drawer may be opened. The improvement disclosed involves providing each cam element with a cylindrical bearing surface to contact the vertical channel so that the cam element is vertically slidably in the channel while being rotatable about the axis of the cylindrical bearing surface.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 1983Date of Patent: November 6, 1984Assignee: Office Specialty Division of Hollanding Inc.Inventor: William W.
