Patent number: 5717281Abstract: The inner surface of a video display panel such as cathode ray tube (CRT) glass faceplate is initially coated with a mixture of one of the primary color phosphors, an organic binder such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) diluted with water, and a photoresist agent. The organic binder overcomes the poor adhesion to the glass faceplate of the photoresist which typically includes polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and reduces the oxygen which decreases phosphor exposure time. To overcome PVA and PVP incompatibilities which give rise to nonuniform film thickness, a vinyl pyrrolidone-vinyl alcohol (VP-VA) copolymer is added to the phosphor, organic binder and photoresist mixture in the range of 0.1-30 wt %. The copolymer with both the VP and VA functioning groups serves as a coupling agent between the PVA and PVP and eliminates incompatibilities between these components. The VP-VA copolymer preferably has a VP/VA mole ratio in the range of 20/80 to 80/20.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 1996Date of Patent: February 10, 1998Assignee: Chunghwa Picture Tubes, Ltd.Inventors: Hua-Sou Tong, Chun-Min Hu, Yu-Chung Yu

Patent number: 5543769Abstract: The superconducting magnetic switch or fast kicker magnet is employed with electron stream or a bunch of electrons to rapidly change the direction of flow of the electron stream or bunch of electrons. The apparatus employs a beam tube which is coated with a film of superconducting material. The tube is cooled to a temperature below the superconducting transition temperature and is subjected to a constant magnetic field which is produced by an external dc magnet. The magnetic field produced by the dc magnet is less than the critical field for the superconducting material, thus, creating a Meissner Effect condition. A controllable fast electromagnet is used to provide a magnetic field which supplements that of the dc magnet so that when the fast magnet is energized the combined magnetic field is now greater that the critical field and the superconducting material returns to its normal state allowing the magnetic field to penetrate the tube.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 1995Date of Patent: August 6, 1996Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Department of EnergyInventors: Yehuda Goren, Narayan K. Patent number: 5536994Abstract: The inner surface of a video display panel such as cathode ray tube (CRT) glass faceplate is initially coated with a mixture of one of the primary color phosphors, an organic binder such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) diluted with water, and a photoresist agent. The VP-VA copolymer preferably has a VP/VA mole ratio in the range of 20/80 to 80/20.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 1995Date of Patent: July 16, 1996Assignee: Chunghwa Picture Tubes, Ltd.Inventors: Hua-Sou Tong, Chun-Min Hu, Yu-Chung Yu

Patent number: 5536997Abstract: A cathode ray tube in which a glass-enamel layer having particles with a secondary electron emission coefficient smaller than 1, for example Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3 particles, is provided in the neck. The percentage of particles exceeds approximately 30% and the surface resistance or resistivity ranges between 10.sup.10 and 10.sup.14 .OMEGA./.quadrature.. The high-voltage behavior of such a layer is satisfactory. The convergence drift is relatively small. In addition, a description is given of a method of providing such a glass-enamel layer.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 1992Date of Patent: July 16, 1996Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventor: Leonardus Th. Patent number: 5534748Abstract: The display screen (3) of a cathode ray tube (1) is provided with a light-absorbing coating (8) comprising a hybrid inorganic-organic material consisting of an inorganic network of at least silicon oxide and a polymeric component. By means of a sol-gel process the coating can be provided in a relatively large thickness without causing crackles. Consequently, the layer can contain large quantities of dyestuff, so that said layer can very suitably be used as a chrominance or transmission coating to improve the picture contrast. Even if the display screen is not highly polished, the coating can be obtained with a high-polish and it complies with the customary mechanical, chemical and optical requirements.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 1995Date of Patent: July 9, 1996Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventor: Emmanuel W. Patent number: 5530316Abstract: Provided is a color cathode-ray tube with a magnetic shield member which is capable of efficiently reducing only the amount of mislanding caused by the external magnetic field applied in one direction by effectively utilizing the shape effect of a magnetic substance and which can be readily designed. A U-shaped magnetic substance is formed by curving an elongated magnetic substance into a U-like shape. One end of the U-shaped magnetic substance is fixed to a long side wall side of a frame, while the other end thereof extends toward an electron gun. The U-shaped magnetic substance is magnetized therealong due to the shape effect thereof, concentrating an induction field on the area surrounded by the U-shaped magnetic substance. Thus, a great shield effect can be obtained. Further, the U-shaped magnetic substance is readily magnetized in a special direction due to its shape anisotropy.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 1993Date of Patent: June 25, 1996Assignees: Tohoku Gakuin University, Mitsubishi Denki Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Akira Haga, Hiroshi Nasuno, Keisuke Yamane

Patent number: 5528100Abstract: A flat cathode-ray tube in which a ceramics film or a glass film is formed by thermal spray on the coupled surface of a metal case. This assembly and a glass screen are coupled through crystallized frit glass or by glass fusion. The coupling between the metal case and the glass screen has a coupling strength sufficient to resist the vacuum stress. The metal case, which is not exposed for a long time to high temperatures during thermal spraying, can be made of a metal for realizing a lightweight without any thermal deformation or dimensional variations, thereby attaining satisfactory mechanical properties.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 1994Date of Patent: June 18, 1996Assignee: Mitsubishi Denki Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Shunichi Igeta, Koji Nakamura, Makoto Ishizuka, Tsunehiko Sugawara, Otojiro Kida

Patent number: 5523649Abstract: A multilayer antireflective coating is applied to the outer surface of a video display panel such as a cathode ray tube (CRT) or a flat panel display in the form of successive thin layers each having a different light refractive index, where the light refractive index of each layer decreases in the direction away from the surface of the display panel and toward the outer layer of the coating. Each layer is formed from the same starting gel materials, with the degree of crosslinking of each gel layer varied to provide the desired light refractive index for reducing reflections from the display panel's outer surface over a wide spectrum. The extent of crosslinking and thus the individual layer's light refractive index is varied by controlling the aging of the gel, with longer aging providing increased crosslinking and larger molecular weight for a lower light refractive index. For example, silica gels aged over different time periods provide gels having a light refractive index ranging from 1.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 1994Date of Patent: June 4, 1996Assignee: Chunghwa Picture Tubes, Ltd.Inventors: Hua-Sou Tong, Chun-Min Hu
